still better than my chromebook camera
Incredibly relatable! I have to use a chromebook for school and it’s camera is very low res.
Well what did you expect for a chromebook lol. They are not quality items!!
@@DaOofGuy better then my school chrome book, but just a lil bit under my normal chrome book camera.
Better than my android
lol
I like how Elliot seems amazed about a nintendo DS camera despite the Gameboy camera being a thing...
@Ian Muirhead yeah! Iirc it also had a little printer. Basically a gameboy Polaroid camera.
I like how he freaked out about a controller for a game as well - did he never play guitar hero on DS with it's controller?
@@firstnamelastname-zi4mq the game boy camera was black and white and extremely low res, though. And it was much bigger, it stuck out on the outside like a rumble pak game.
@@esmith13 I had Band Hero on the DS, which came with the "guitar grip" as well as some weird ass overlay for drums, and it worked with the mic for singing.
And the DSi. And the 3ds had a camera too. In fact Nintendo has been fiddling with putting cameras in handhelds since 1998, and that only stopped with the release of the Switch in 2017. (Edit: Or as Mr. Janssen kindly pointed out, didn't stop with the release of the switch, as there's an IR camera in the joycon; albeit underutilized.)
“The only DSI I have Is a super rare Panda development unit”
*oh, ok.*
😂 Elliot, the HumbleBragKing
lmao this scrub only has one DSi
THE DSI IS BETTER
I have a DS lite and a 3ds
James Bond wishes he had that DS camera
More like Alex Rider
Jason Born has joined the chat.
@@RabbitConfirmed "Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne !"
@@GrumpySylveon u mentioned Alex Rider! No way, I love that book series!
Ayy Deckard. Kewl movie
Imagine if you ported out all the gba buttons to a connector on the bottom, then use an arduino and rotary encoder to allow you to use a paddle controller on gba games.
sounds like youre on the way, why dont you try it?
@@BackForwardPunch hmm... Maybe I might. I wanna make a Gameboy Macro, so perhaps I'll make it work for that? 😂
Edit:
Idea. I'd need 9 pins atleast (11 if I want start and select)
If I'm using a Gameboy Macro, I could actually use the DS cart slot as the connector. Just gotta disconnect the pins. Then rewire everything to some button test points.
The controllers could use some unofficial "50 games in one" cartridges, and connect to a bit of perfboard.
Or if I get good enough at designing parts, I could make a custom pcb.
@@Semaze pcbway is inexpensive enough for anyone to prototype!
As a bonus if you make it work with DS you take a meal off a scalpers table 😀😀
@@Semaze i think you could do it with the slot, thats a good idea
“Wait till the end of the video and i’ll put it in a regular gameboy”
Not gonna lie, that did hook me in

I think the Face Training game is meant to be an anti-aging tool. You strengthen the muscles in your face to avoid saggy skin. I doubt it works, but that's probably what it's for.
I wish the paddles were more available because they work so well. It's also compatible with Space Invaders Extreme for DS.
Those accessories should be hardware-compatible with the GBA, it's just a matter of software. It should be possible to write a homebrew game which loads into the GBA's RAM and then uses the Arkanoid controller. If the interface is documented it shouldn't be too hard to do.
I don’t know that it’s possible to entirely load a game into the GBA’s RAM like you can on a PC or other platforms
@@kraio-sfu It is and it's most often used with multiplayer games so you can play with only one cartridge. There are also uses where Animal Crossing downloads games to the GBA.
DSi Games are region locked, that might be why it didn‘t work on the Panda-Dev-DSi
Dev units are most likely region unlocked or it might have HiyaCFW installed.
Face exercises are a common thing in Japan apparently
Accessories in Japan are peculiar.
Nice pfp
I actually have face training, I’ve been waiting for this video lol
Love seeing Elliot geek out over Nintendo stuff. These kinds of videos are the best
Love these rare/odd accessories, thank you for sharing and finding them!
First
That's awesome and takes the gaming experience to a whole new level.
Man, I always wanted that Arkanoid paddle. It's a shame it never came out Stateside. :(
I thought it did here in the usa?
@@viscountalpha I don't think the DS one did. We got the one for the original NES (also by Taito for Arkanoid for the NES).
The blue button in the Japanese DS version of _Face Training_ just translates to "start".
just wanted to say your killing it with the content man
8:34 - Want that as a notification sound xD
You need to update your subscriber image at 0:05 to say 400k. Congrats also :D
Always appreciate you showcasing these hidden gems man! Cheers
Super love your videos!! How slick they are, how good is the quality!! amazing!!
I really wanted to see what would've happened with the Standard-DS version of the Face Training game, how it would've reacted to a DSi/3DS. Would it have used the system's built-in camera like the DSi version or would it have not worked because it was expecting specifically the DS Option Pak camera?
The slider might be clickable, Elliot, instead of having to press the B button every time.
The spinner is not clickable... If you think about it that would have been terrible, you'd have to change your grip every time you clicked it (normally holding the spinner between thumb and index finger) and the risk of unintentionally changing position when clicking would also have been annoying. Getting the laser powerup in Arkanoid would have been the worst.
It just seems weird since he who is righthanded isn't just using the D-pad to release the ball which is what any sensible person would be doing.
the way the camera flicks up is so satisfying
That flex was clean lol! Nice video man! Great review and great overall presentation brother!
Always fun seeing all the unusual accessories. Also congratulations on the 400k!
Got these!!! Going to be doing more DS videos on my channel :) thanks for sharing!
Yoooo japan is so awesome thanks for covering these bro!
I have a copy of that controller, the exact bundle in fact.
If I remember correctly you can serve the ball by pressing it down, that way your hand can stay on the knob the whole time.
This is the nicest way to start my day ♥️
Would've been pretty awesome if the arkanoid controller had a GBA version built in to it.
Cool accessories. I like the paddle.
Both are incredible accessories!
Love your videos Elliot. Just recently subscribed, keep up the good work man. 🤟🏻
Stop Skeltons From Fighting covered these a few months ago, id love to get my hands on the arkanoid controller, but yeah there a lil hard to find, finding one new in box is awsome
The only reason why i keep watching your videos is.... i love them.🥳
I've been binge watching all your videos recently, keep up the good work!
My local ASDA used to have lots of brand new copies of the DSi version of Face Training in the clearance games section back when they had a big media section. They then turned that section into a bigger clothes area and moved their media section to be a small part of one aisle and only stocks new releases for games.
I think I still have the copy I bought actually.
Love the content keep up the work
Best use of the Arkanoid controller is Space Invaders Extreme. It ats batteries so quickly tho. I remember some people were making rom-hacks of other DS games that didn't support it natively.
The Arknoid controller was also in the US. I'm aware of at least a couple Homebrew projects that supported that controller.
The DSi when running a DSi mode had a faster processor and more RAM. Clearly this camera related game requires those things. Other games that work in the DSi will also work in the DS, as long as they won't require DSi mode specific features.
Once DSi mode was exploited some really interesting things came about too. Like there's a very rare release of Quake II that runs on it that most people don't even know about. There's also a bunch of really nice emulators, like an Atari 5200 emulator.
The best thing about the paddle : SPACE INVADERS.
It worked with Space Invaders and wow, that was an amazing way to play that game. It turned it into a whole new game.
It makes me sad that nobody else has done a shmup with a paddle controller.
This is a genuinely obscure CZcams channel
I don’t watch your videos often Elliot, but when it do, I enjoy them.
Thanks man
@@TheRetroFuture your welcome
That spinner is a great little gadget. I'm still looking for a proper dial of sorts to use for playing Tempest on the PC. Options are limited!
These were super cool
These are honestly really cool, even though new handheld iterations made them rather pointless.
I've heard the paddle controller works with other games, including the international releases of those titles.
Would you be willing to do a tear down (in the future, once the house is sorted) to see what components are used, pin layouts and whether a programmed chip is involved? I'd understand if not with such a rare and valuable item.
Got the full boxed copy, with paddle, of Arkanoid down the the basement. Bought it back in the day, probably from NCSX, and would play it on lunch breaks at work. Good times.
That arkanoid controller works with Spce Invaders extreme too! They even had a seperate high score table for users of it.
I swear a face training game came out in europe tho...
That’s pretty cool!
Dang never been here in the first ten seconds before
Same
Real cool accesories I didn't know off
At 1.14 Elliot says absolutely, if you double tap to skip 10 seconds he says it again, double tap and he says it a third time 😂😂😂😂
that ball game looks fun!
Face Training may not work on the Panda dev unit if it's a USA development kit. The DSi and onwards had region locking... which is also why it wouldn't load on your Char 3DS (Japan console). Cheers!
I have this radio contraption that you put in your DSI gaming slot
The Arkanoid game & controller bundle was available in the UK, I recall loads of them on eBay back in the day, just wish I’d bought one as they rarely crop up these days and they’re invariably expensive when they do.
They were testing the camera before the the DSi came out, so now it built in :D
This is so cool!
Have you tried the English face training game with the camera option Pak in the DS lite?
Congrats on 400k!!!!!
I've wanted the paddle controller for years. It works with the bust-a-move games.
Those accessories are extremely cool. Especially the Arkanoid paddle/spinner. Some modern Arcade1up machines don't even have nice spinners.
I have the Nintendo DS Internet Browser (another weird oddity) I remember buying it because of how weird it was, I actually used it on a few occasions to look up stuff about a game I was playing !
I love these weird accessories videos :)
Congrats on 400k subscribers!
Oh man, that Arkanoid controller looks awesome! The DS version was such a great game too!
I have the Arkanooid controller, I got it here in the us at Gamestop back in the day.
I'm jealous you got the Taito paddle, wew
You make such cool videos 👍
I think the Arkanoid paddle also works with Space Invaders Extreme if I remember correctly.
I have the face training. You don’t have to pop out the camera to use it. The pop out is for the phat DS since gba games are flush in that system and the ds lite works without popping it out since the camera sticks out as it is.
What happened with the DSi game is that you needed a Europe-region DSi or 3DS. For some reason, most DSi-enhanced and DSi-exclusive games were region locked to their region, so if you tried to play it on a North American or Japanese DSi or 3DS, it just wouldn't go.
If you play them on a DS or DS Lite, those systems don't have any region locking at all, but you wouldn't get the extra speed or features from playing on a DSi, and if it was exclusive to the DSi, you'd get an error message like that. It won't appear in the menu or anything if it triggers a DSi or 3DS's region lock, if I recall. But it could be mistaken as being that the game just doesn't read.
Still, it's so neat to see that accessories like these existed! The paddle especially looks like it would be so cool to play arcade-style games with.
So cool!
Wow that is so awesome and cool😮😎
the arkanoid thing actually came out here in switzerland and i used to have it!
Have you tried out the optical mouse accessory that came with a Japanese DS game. Also doubled as a really stable stand.
Nice video and cool accessories. Do you know Metroid Prime Pinball? This comes with a Rumble Pack for the Slot 2. Very cool little thing, I played it today and have so much fun with it. :)
The Panda units from both DSi and 3DS don't run commercial DSi and 3DS games. They run every DS game however because these games had no region lock back then.
These are realy cool
I ordered both of these from Play Asia way back in the day. I want to say the paddle controller also worked with space invaders but I’m not sure.
I was going to comment to say the same thing. I can confirm it does work with Space Invaders Extreme. That's what I got mine with back in the day.
the face training game looks like it could be a therapy tool, either that or corporate brainwashing.
Heehee! I loved Elliot playing Face Training. x3
Elliot, you certainly get around! Mystery Scoop?
lol that arkanoid box was sunburned to oblivion on the front, looks like it's been sat in a window of a shop for a long time.
1st product - cool, i wonder there more controllers like that.
2nd product - this one look like it give the user's face a workout.
both product - i think those are external controller for the original ds which is cool.
could you do a small video of what happens when you put the accessory packs into a gameboy? im super curious what will happen since they are using gameboy carts for the accessory packs?
Me bingeing the retro future at 4am, there was a face training game??? 😮
I am a very big fan of your channel
The DSi has a camera so I think you can play the japanese face-massaging game on the DSi with no problem.
Plus, that's the reason why the camera is now obsolete.
Interesting finds
elliot: sorry that is sord of a flex. whole channel: okay this is my modded 3596 dollar gameboy advance
I still have my DS spinner and it's awesome.
See if the paddle controller works with any other games! I'm curious to know if it just emulates a d-pad or touchscreen input (in which case it might), or if it's just doing its own thing entirely (in which case it probably won't).
Would be pretty crazy to play Mario with that paddle controller.
I just bought a used Aqua blue 3DS for equivalent of 10 pounds. It was a real lucky find,it just needed to be cleaned.
"Little bit of a flex, so sorry about that" Then it doesn't work, haha. Honestly I watch your vids all the time, just poking fun
