  • Dilution ratios seem to be a confusing part of auto detailing for the guys starting in the business, and I have received question after question about this subject, so finally, here is a comprehensive video sharing what dilution ratios are, and how I professionally dilute several of my products! Diluting concentrates is not nearly as complicated as many seem to think it is, some simple math, fractions, etc... and that is really it. Dilution ratios in all reality is not an exact science, and as you grow as an auto detailer you will begin to dilute chemicals differently, while you learn how certain chemicals react in certain situations! Follow along, and leave your confusion behind with auto detailing dilution ratios!

    This is an outstanding explanation. I wasn't sure what they were going by when they say 3 to 1 and so forth. You made it clear that it's usually in ounces and that gives me my answer. I didn't even know about diluting with the super clean. I sprayed it on my dash of vehicle and it took the paint off. This works well on seats and carpet but dilute it if using it on other things

    In the example of 32oz at a 10:1 you would use 2.7oz of product and 29.3oz of water.
    That doesn't seem like much of a difference when you could just just pour a rounded amount and be done with it. However things change when you dilute larger sizes.
    10:1 with 128oz jug (1gal). That equates to 11.6oz and 116.4oz water. That becomes a substantial difference.

    Yes searching for dilution charts and finding the amount or container size needed is the simplest way to go about it. The issue may be having to still subtract to reach the target. Best thing is to dilute it for a full empty gallon container, and top off your bottle sprayer as needed, that way the mix is more consistent rather than spending time refilling a not quite empty spray bottle, dripping product and exposing it to other elements every time is diluted.

    Just so I'm clear....mixing anything 10:1 means that out of a total of 10 parts, 9 parts should be water, 1 part should be product.
    In other words, 10% of the total volume is product. Not--->> for every 10 parts water I should add 1 part product--meaning I have 11 total parts. Correct?

    • @frank2217
      @frank2217 Před 6 lety +1

      Mike K no, it's 10 parts water, 1 part prouduct. 10: 1 is the ratio.

    • @1987019870
      @1987019870 Před 6 lety

      I used to think it was simple lol...I guess it depends on the nomenclature:
      "dilution ratio is the ratio of solute to solvent. It is often used for simple dilutions, one in which a unit volume of a liquid material of interest is combined with an appropriate volume of a solvent liquid to achieve the desired concentration. The diluted material must be thoroughly mixed to achieve the true dilution. For example, in a 1:5 dilution, with a 1:5 dilution ratio, entails combining 1 unit volume of solute (the material to be diluted) with 5 unit volumes of the solvent to give 6 total units of total volume.
      This is often confused with "dilution factor" which is an expression which describes the ratio of the aliquot volume to the final volume. Dilution factor is a notation often used in commercial assays. For example, in a 1:5 dilution, with a 1:5 dilution factor, (verbalize as "1 to 5" dilution) entails combining 1 unit volume of solute (the material to be diluted) with (approximately) 4 unit volumes of the solvent to give 5 units of total volume. Note that some solutions and mixtures take up slightly less volume than their components."
      taken from wiki--en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilution_ratio
      thanks for clarifying @frank2217

    • @dossegundos7145
      @dossegundos7145 Před 6 lety

      Mike K yes, 10-1 equals 11 parts just like 4-1 equals 5 parts. Without bottle markings some math is needed but can work to refill existing bottles with product already inside, and allows adding water before the product. Example, the bottle has a 32 onz capacity and has 6 onz of 10-1 diluted product. 32-6=26, to be safe and not overfill we use 25 as the target, keeping the 10-1 ratio, 10-1=11. 25/11=2.727x10(water or majority ratio)=22.272727+2.2727=the 25 onz target. Rounding it off, you add 22.5 onz of water then add 2.75 onz of product this will fill up the bottle close to 31.5 onz that already had about 6 onz of product mixed. Easier to have gallons premixed and use those with the same formula. I'll do a 32 onz bottle 4-1 quick. 32/5=6.4x4=25.6(water first) then 6.4 0nz of product added to get 32 onz, round numbers work better, Ml allows more flexibility and accuracy to avoid rounding up or eyeing or guessing amounts

    • @1987019870
      @1987019870 Před 6 lety

      So no matter what the dilution ratio in a 32oz bottle, I will always end up with more than 32oz of mixed solution correct? (based upon your statement, "Mike K yes, 10-1 equals 11 parts just like 4-1 equals 5 parts") "5 parts" ...meaning "more than 32oz of solution now."
      However, your last statement, "I'll do a 32 onz bottle 4-1 quick. 32/5=6.4x4=25.6(water first) then 6.4 0nz of product added to get 32 onz" ,..... will yield a total of 32 oz of solution.
      Those 2 examples yield different total amounts of solution???? I'm cornfuzzled lol.

    • @wilsonautodetailing
      @wilsonautodetailing  Před 6 lety +4

      Dont overthink it, technically in this context 10:1 does in fact mean 11 total ounces, that can change when you get into more specific things, like in chemistry when you are doing titrations, dilutions, and different things like that, but that is more in an academic context, not really real life like we are doing here, 10:1 will yield 11 total ounces, but again, just eye it, no need to be exact when you are diluting in this context, the tiny amount off that you may be is not going to make a big enough difference to do anything. :D

    Sorry guy but you are wrong with this.
    A solution ratio it's a proportion (or a fraction) of the product in the total volume, weight, etc. So for example 1:10 means 0.1 or 10% of the total volume of dilution. In other words, 90% (l, ml, oz, etc.) of water and the product then will be 10%.
    1:4 is 25% product if the total, for example for 1 litre you need 250 ml of product and 750 ml (3:4) of water.
    1:2 is 1 part water, 1 part product.
    1:1 is just directly. No solution at all.
    Keep yourself well informed about this point. I study chemicals and believe me, you are wrong. Hope that helps. 👍

    Before, when cleaning my rims, i used to use Meguiars Wheel Brightener 4:1. But I wash my car once a week and the rims is not so dirty ; 10:1 is more than enough. I don't want to waste my chemical. This is a tip for people who don't wait their rims to become very dirty before they clean it.
    (I think professional should have two spray for the wheels : one is 4:1 and the other is 10:1. So the professional can chose and don't have to waste money in using more product than needed)

    I have a client who spilled “about a gallon of weed eater gas “ in her CRV I have cleaned with various cleaning supplies and the smell just won’t budge. Any suggestions?

      @@ApolloTurnMeUp what is that?

    • @ApolloTurnMeUp
      @ApolloTurnMeUp Před 3 lety +1

      Apologies. I didn’t see your reply. It’s basically a machine that converts oxygen into ozone using electricity. It generates O3 from O2 and since the O3 is an unstable bond the third oxygen molecule will bond to anything in the car in an attempt to revert back to regular oxygen. It does this by attaching the extra molecule to viruses, bacteria, odors, etc and removes them at an ionic level. However if there is still gas in the carpet and or upholstery then no amount of ozone will get rid of the smell. Alot of people over estimate the ability of ozone machines. Always remember its meant to remove the smell not remove the source of the smell itself. Just make sure you for sure have removed the entirety of the gasoline and then run it and it should go away no problem.

      @@maryanncfleming They are fairly safe but the ozone is toxic to breathe in. So make sure you read the instructions and possibly even watch a few videos before trying it. But it will work.

    The proper way to dilute is with beakers and scales...Walter White would be furious if he saw this.

    I used Meguiars APC to clean the interior of my car and went back the day after and it had left a white powdery residue on the doors and basically anything that was made of plastic. I've tried dish soap, viniger, glass clean (the stuff is also on the windows). It will not come off. The only thing that has worked for the plastic is dash dressing but I'm guessing all it has done is dye the powder black (or whatever this stuff is). It will not come off no matter what I was and how much I use. Does anybody know how to get rid of this stuff thats all over my plastics and windows. I've never known a 'cleaning product' to make something dirtier! Have I maybe not diluted it properly?? Please help someone!😂
