- Buying detailing chemical products in bulk is a great way to save money in the long-run if you're a detailer, but if you're new to chemical dilution, reading dilution ratios can be a confusing case of not knowing what goes where. (And how much!)
In today's video, Anthony provides a beginner's guide to detailing chemical dilution ratios, including what they are, how to interpret them and how to use them to dilute your own detailing chemicals.
This Frequently Asked Question was important enough we felt it should appear on both our main channel AND The Rag Company FAQ channel!

As a mathematically challenged guy, this has helped to ease my anxiety about doing the ratios in unmarked bottles!
Bro...this just sent off a million light bulbs for me to dilute my product that I bought. Thank you so much for simplifying it. This is what I love youtube for. Thanks again.
Cool... I just like the Sprayer wall bars. Inspiration for future garage makeover. :)
Great job Anthony and the video crew! This was excellent in presentation and visually fun. It helps that you presented it with a realistic process and allowing for minor variation, close enough.
The graphics are SO well done on this - I really liked watching the values change as Anthony poured in the fluids. Mad props to the editors.
Anthony has always been my go to for metric conversions and lubricity concerns.
THE BEST EXPLANATION EVER... AND THIS DETAILER APPRECIATES YOUR TEACHING'S TO THIS IN MANY WAY'S!!!! GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!
Great job Anthony! Very helpful. Thanks 😊
Anthony great explanation. But I have a tip. I always pour the water in first, then pour chemical in. A lot of chemicals will foam really bad if you do it the other way. Especially with APC and degreasers. In your ounce example it would also help with knowing you got 8 ounces of chemical because the container should have a 24 ounce mark, and 32 ounce mark. Thanks for posting.
Common knowledge in the detailing industry for mixing liquid concentrate chemicals with water is missing for some reason.
Wear the minimum PPE as mentioned in the products SDS (gloves, eye protection, ect.).
When mixing concentrated (>10%) aqueous chemicals (such as acids, bases and oxidizers), ***always*** pour the more concentrated solution (Brake Buster, Super Clean, Wheel Acid, ONR, ect.) into the less concentrated one (water).
Nicely done. Yes more chemistry please.
Great information for all. As everyone who watched the podcast, the winning brakebuster combo for the IK foam pro 2 is 10:1. 3:1 makes Anthony lose sleep at night. 🤣
Muchas gracias por la información, para la mezcla de limpieza de frenos.
Hi Anthony, great video, I always love your stuff and your personality which rocks, also congratulations "dad". I'd just like to comment about the video and I am not a hater or wise guy but I think it would have been important to tell people its always best practice to add the water before the product, or your often gonna get foamy overflow. All the best from the UK mate.
I finally understand now. Thanks
Indeed you are a Doc!and knows how to teach, help people make sure of their ideas w/ revision in Chemistry than you profe!
gracias buenas noches, todos los productos se diluyen ? o solo los de galon ?.
For metric calc, the big number always go on right side, for example 1:10, 1:30, 1:40.
Another point 3:1 is the same 1:4, 9:1 is the same 1:10
To mix 800ml in in 1:10 do the math:
800 / 10 = 80ml (1 part)
800ml - 80ml = 720ml (9 parts)
When u mix the water and concentrate can u shake it to mix the solution up or would that create to much foam. If that is true, how would you suggest mixing the solution with out creating to much foam once its in the foamer. Could u premix it another container and then dump it in the ik foamer. Just looking for a few suggestions on how to mix the chemicsl and actually have a little more success using ik foamer.
How about parts when mixing so many parts to parts cleaner?? Thanks for the video. Good information
Thank you I was a bit confused. Some companies use 3:1 and others do 1:3. I'm glad that you cleared up that the smaller number is always the solution you're using. I did what you said and assumed that three to one meant three parts solution One part water. I thought that sounded weird. Thank you!
I thought this was weird too. However, I was always told the correct way of writing and reading dilution ratios was product always listed first and water second. I guess I’m confused why their couldn’t be dilutions that contain more product than water like 3:1 meaning 75% solution and 25% water. Why wouldn’t this be possible?
I wish math was this entertaining back in high school :)
extremely helpful, it has always confused me and I blow thru product guessing
What's a recommended dilution for magic wheel cleaner koch chemie for ik foam pro 2 and ik trigger sprayer
Garage chefs 👩🏼🍳 😁
Hey Anthony, this is Adner from PR, what is the perfect ratio for IF Pro 12?
That sprayer wall is a really clutch addition to TRC HQ, is the picture of the trucks new as well?
The editing has also become more lively with the effects, interesting!!

Sorry if this is too long. Just purchased a foam cannon, my cat shampoo is a wash and wax type. What dilution ratio do you recommend?
Do you use distilled water or regular tap water for dilution? And why?
I never found it difficult when it came to dilution ratios but I can see where it can be confused with dilution factors. Hope this helps everyone that may get confused with the two.
And I believe some products exist where it’s x parts product to 1 part water. Meguiar’s M799 bead booster for example says 3 parts product to 1 part water.
my products need to be diluted with a rario of 1:50 and 1:200 ;)
Nice video 👍
would i be able to buy the nozzle for the foamer? i have the sprayer nozzle but not the foamer can i just buy it individually?
This may sound dumb but can i just pour in a 3:1 dilution measured from a plastic trigger spray bottle?
Good explanation... Should make a chart with Oz and Ml on it so we cant just look at it instead of trying to work it out Thanks
What dillution ratio for brake buster works with ik tr
Thanks
Did IKsprayers upgrade their triggers???
Pos Tolco?
Whats your thought about karcher car soap ?
Finally 💯💯💯💯💯💯
Are those upgraded triggers on the trigger sprayer? If not where did you get them? They look comfortable.
They are the gold chemical resistant sprayers you should be able to pick them up at your local detail shop or Amazon

When will the IK spray bottles offer a black bottle?
Tony rocking the Dad bod ❤️
I get confused when it says 128-1 what do I do to get smaller numbers
Simple quick answer: If your foamer is a 50 ounce style for example...you will be filling it with 45 ounces or so of water to leave a bit of air space in the container. Use warm water...stir in concentrate with spoon....add 2 ounces of quality foamer concentrate and no more. There.
Great tip!
Brake buster isn't actually meant to be diluted. It's just that someone did it at some point to save money and it became a thing. Technically, you can dilute anything.
How to do a 10:1 with a 2 ltr spray bottle
Is that the ratio recommended for foaming brake buster in the IK foamer? I can't seem to get that right. If anyone can recommend a ratio please do.
Can you do a ratio video for foaming other products? Or do consistencies vary too much for example, with APC's to be that general?
10:1
@@Jeeper1378 thanks! I will try.
where do you find the dilution ratio tho??
Aren’t the ik bottles ready for dilution ratios? No need for that middle extra step with the jar.
Good explanation video Anthony. However, you never delved into metric side of what is a gallon converted to metric. From memory of my time in the USA, a gallon converts to approx. 3.8litres. Where everywhere else in the world that are in metric, 1 gallon converts to 4.5litres. Even though the ONR cap is 1/2oz, in the metric part of the world we still need to know how many litres of water is required . If there is any doubt, this website will convert Gallon(s) to Litre(s) for the US, UK, AUS.
Do you always use distilled water when diluting your chemicals?
Gonna be honest here. Just got a Marolex sprayer and its so much better than the IK. For one the dilution is not nearly as finicky… especially using Brake Buster.
I know this is totally irrelevant but are you guys going to be having a sale on towels for Black Friday or just chemicals?
What if I don't dilute it?
Im all for it however everyone here (Aus) is out of stock of ONR until end of year :(
can you guys do a "home for the holidays" type series where you show which of your mf towles would work best for home applications? since us detailers will be home for the holidays we could at least use our towels to dry dishes or bathroom mirrors
@@theragcompany does it matter if using tap vs distilled water to diluted brake buster or any product?
I have a IK foamer and it has never worked total piece of crap never foams no matter what I just bought the IK Foam pro 2 it better not do the same thing very frustrating
Pretty simple really, you wouldn't drink squash/ribena neat
I didn’t hear a thing he said after I heard 8x’s
I’m a real man I don’t need no dilution chart I ride dirty with my ONR!
8 ouches/ 24 ounches=1/3
1st
If the bottle doesn’t have a dilution ratio mark on the side, put the chemicals in and write the line and in this case, 4:1. The 8 oz of the chemicals in the video is the line.
These are dilution factors not dilution ratios.
Do math??? Nah
I'm friends with hairy house wife
They really dont teach you maths in the us? For real?
Emmm, just use a free app???
