This question of do Griffith's ends justify his means doesn't have any weight or significance to anyone who hasn't gotten invested in Berserk. Griffith didn’t cause it, Skull Knight did. Guts lives in the interstice, the place where the spiritual world and the human world combine. Some people, usually people in rural areas like villages, can see things, such as elves, from the spiritual world because they have a looser belief of what does and does not exist. Skull Knight, attempting to kill Femto/Griffith, used his Sword of Behelits and created an astral fissure colliding the two worlds into one. Ironically, allowing Guts’ sword to slay actual dragons if he wanted to. Griffith does take advantage of the situation, but he didn’t outright cause it.

    • @postproductions2466
      @postproductions2466 Před rokem +256

Precisely mirrors how he created friendships and then destroyed them later. The great writing of Griffith is that hes just steeped in irony. He creates the band of the hawk to become king - he then destroys the band of the hawk to become king. He claims to only respect friends that also follow their own dreams, yet him saying this is precisely what causes Guts to pursue his own dream, breaking griffith and ultimately causing him to destroy his own dream. He saves Casca from getting r*****, leaving her eternally loyal to him and later that loyalty to him is repayed with him r***ing her. He is made of evil irony right down to every last scene. His unwillingness to chan ge for his loves ones is a common theme - he beats guts in a duel and then years later looses to guts in a duel because he doesnt change his tactics from the first one. (Man really thought he could stop Guts' heap of raw iron with a tooth pick one handed)
Griffith is evil, but only in a secondary sort of way. He is evil as a product of his miserably ironic sense of entitlement to what he wants over the wellbeing of the people he loves - who should really be his true dream, but narrow Falconlike vision for the nothingness shit dream he cobbled together as a little kid is precisely what left those cobblestones bare in the first place. Oh Griffith...

@@eclypse5081 depends on the perspective, I personally find him sympathetic as well
Throughout the Band of the Hawks' Undefeated Streak, Griffith was trying super hard to stay strong and not let guilt eat away at him because of the casualties. At this point, he's still sane, like Casca said, even though Griffith's a different breed from the rest of them, in the end he's still human
Guts' Presence can be said to be what's keeping Griffith from going mad out of guilt, unbeknownst to even Griffith himself, Guts became an irreplaceable person in his life, to the point where Guts' presence alone is enough for him and he later on realized that Guts' importance to him was equivalent to his Dream
After being left by Guts and tortured for a year, to the point where he's a lifeless corpse, Griffith's mind was only filled with Guts, keeping him sane actually. He tried hard to hate him, but when he sees Guts again, he realized he can't actually bring himself to hate him, to the point where he's willing to just live a Normal Life with Casca
Well, in the end, he was presented with a choice, his Dream or the Band of Hawks, and he unfortunately chose the former, because for him to not be consumed by Guilt brought by his Actions in the past, he HAD to convince himself that 'the end justified the means', if he stopped chasing his dream, the dead won't forgive him and he'll live his life regretting not chasing it when the power to accomplish it is right before his eyes
At the very least, that's my take on Griffith's Character

If my reply didn't convince you to find him of the same opinion, then that's your opinion, no need to admonish mine
If you misunderstand my comment in anyway, what I meant is that Griffith was trying hard to be Perfect as well when he's at his highest, the only person who knew his Cruelty and Dark Side was Guts. Is that not sympathetic?
Guts is also his only Friend and he didn't realize it till he lost him, he tried to keep him for his own because deep inside he's the only Person he relies on and would actually die for. This is what caused his dream to momentarily falter
And no, I never meant to justify his actions and choices on the Eclipse, its just my personal take on his Thoughts at that time. At that time, my anger didn't seep through till that bastard literally raped Casca in front of Guts just to spite him and prove to himself that he didn't need Guts. This is what sealed the deal for me, his Past Self IS the sympathetic one, not his Post-Eclipse self, forgot to put distinction there honestly

Very VERY few people understand that feeling of being robbed of everything like that. Never, have I ever thought a series would write a character like this- not only that but he was literally manipulated into saying “I wish” like- seriously imagine being severely mentally ill, you’re hallucinating, you can’t place ur real emotions anywhere, you literally want to kill yourself. Then god like beings tell you that ur friends want you to sacrifice them? Like- this isn’t your typical “friendship can save everything guys! You just gotta believe!!!” Kind of anime- it’s painfully realistic. And yeah I don’t like what femto did, or how griffith turned out, but that wont stop me from seeing the reasoning behind his actions, the actual steps it took him to get there. I’ll love the characters that Miura spent years of his life creating, yeah! And I’ll like griffith I’ll appreciate femto as a villain cause- you know at the end of the day he isn’t real.

I love how Griffith doesn't have a tragic moment in his childhood that fuels his ambition. I love that he doesn't have a sobstory, he was just a normal boy who wanted to rise socially. He built his mercenary gang and rose to power with nothing but simple desires with no tipping point nexus to lean on.
As such, his downfall comes from his more present actions: clouding his heart to the sacrificing of innocent people, like the little squire; Guts leaving; his foolish advances towards Charlotte; his feelings of invalidation towards Casca, whom he saw as someone he would always be above of...
This way, there is no Talk no Jutsu. Griffith did all of this without any traumatic baggage. And it's such a unique way of building a tragic bastard.

The problem with Griffith is not the means he uses to reach his desired end, but rather that the end he wants to achieve is unethical and problematic.

I feel like Griffith’s sexuality is along the lines of asexual/aromantic, while he’s had sex with both genders he only really uses it as a way to manipulate people and gain something, rather than desiring to be intimate with someone, he doesn’t entirely seem capable of that kind of emotional attachment.
I know a common fan theory is he had unrecognised feelings towards Guts that he’s too much of a sociopath/narcissist to ever identify it as the real cause of his mini breakdown after Guts left, but it’s equally plausible his reaction to Guts leaving was just a reaction to the loss of power/control over someone as it’d never happened before, then going to Charlotte to reestablish a sense of control.
But to go back to the topic of character design, if I recall correctly at a certain point in European history male nobility wore makeup, including white face powder, blush and lipstick, sometimes white curly wigs too. It was around the same time men worn high heels as a status symbol. It’s likely why nobles in the golden age arc point out he “looks” like he’s noble born, despite being actually being common born.
Tho I imagine Griffith’s design is far more heavily based on artistic depictions of angels, which are historically VERY feminine (sometimes outright drawn as a male/female hybrid) and often have long wavy hair just like his. Even Lucifer himself was very feminine in design, his angel form at least, before the whole red devil design became prominent.

He now fullfilled Griffith's requirements, but in doing so Guts no longer needed him and thus did not really want him in the way Griffith wanted.
Though Guts is perfectly fine after all this, Griffith kind of defined himself in a "damned if you do damned if you don't" situation.
I don't think anything really defines his sexuality either way as, as you said, it's purely an means to an end in his mind, and if anything he COULD be gay or, personally, I believe he leans more to bi, (there's his coming on to/ pathetic attempted rape of casca moments before the eclipse and then legit rape of casca during the eclipse, which seem borne of a depressive desire to be loved, which, prior to his imprisonment he took for granted, and particularly to take what Guts, his true object of desire, now possessed, but there's still a sexual desire element to it...), But in the end, there's just not enough reason to believe any particular way at all about his sexuality.

I think it's important to address another facet of Griffiths motivations pre eclipse. Part of how he justifies what he does in battle is that to stop now would mean all prior sacrifices were moot. That as long as he achieves victory, he can use their deaths for a better cause.
Before his transformation, this was likely part of what helped him decide and justify the decision. His dream could die then and there, meaning all previous sacrifices were for nothing. Or he could add a few more bodies to the pile and still use their sacrifices for something greater. Plus it helped that one of the sacrifices was the person he blamed for his fall from grace.

@_oblivion_ my bad I didn’t even see the first reply saying u read it. But if you search up any video on yt or even google, they all agree. If you haven’t finished berserk and read till the final chapter then u wouldn’t understand. Gotta finish it then come back. The things that happen will change your mind. Also, I get what Griffith did, especially to Guts and Casca. That doesn’t mean Guts wants to go after him. For two years Guts searched for any apostles to slaughter, that is until he came back to Godo’s place and found Casca missing. After the Conviction arc he returned with Casca and decided to not leave her again, but to bring her with him and just protect her. If you read further and further through the volumes, you’ll notice Guts’ character changed a lot since the Black Swordsman arc. He has sympathy, respect, and he cares for people other than Casca now. I get that Griffith basically brainwashed all of Midland and turned it into Falconia but non of that matters anymore. As Guts says later in the manga, Griffith is just a person who will keep pushing toward with nothing to stop him. Guts will never get his actual revenge against Griffith, because that is the type of person he has become. If you still think you have pointless points against an argument that I’m pretty sure Miura himself verified, then just search it up on yt, it’s not my opinion, it’s literally what will happen.

    • @fruitfuI

@_oblivion_ I said “I’m pretty sure it was even verified by Miura himself”. I’m not forming my opinions into any facts. I’ve heard that’s what he said in an interview and that’s why I said I’m pretty sure. Also, I get that you aren’t disagreeing with anything I’m saying, I’m just saying in my opinion, I don’t agree with your opinions given where Guts is mentally in the world of Berserk, to me they make no sense. And I get it’s not for simple “revenge”, but again after reading the final chapter of Berserk, it changes everything. Also, Idk if u meant you’re done with 60-70% or something, but if you are then try finishing the manga, chapter 364 is crucial. But again imo I don’t think he’ll go after Griffith for a greater good or for revenge, given that he already had the chance to do so multiple times and failed. Btw, it’s not really a part of the conversation, but how would he even try to fight Griffith again? He’s tried to at the end of Black Swordsmen arc, and he’s tried to in the Eclipse. He also had the brand which literally prevents him from getting too close, and it puts the person in immense pain. Not only that but Griffith can bend space and time using a finger.

It’s very tricky because Griffith showed signs of caring for his hawks, but at the same time it’s almost like he had to distance himself from them maybe to stay focused and sharp. I don’t think that he was inherently evil from the start, but I just think that his dream of having that kingdom overpowered his compassion For other things. He gave all of his hawks what he promised, and that was a better life, and they were all about to be nobleman and landowners ect. because of the victory of the war. Honestly bro was pretty chill until Julius and the Queen started coming for him and he had to do what he had to do... And as for Guts, technically he owned Guts because Guts lost that duel and he belonged to Griffith so Guts didn’t really have the right to just up and leave like that. Things went downhill from there obviously, but I think there’s some mental illness at play too because Griffith never really had someone to talk to outside of Casca & Guts a little bit.
