Ella Weldon aka Donwella is a multi-genre DJ and social researcher from London. Donwella started DJing whilst living in Cape Town, blending the sounds of London’s party culture and the jazz, hip-hop and soul she grew up around with Kwaito and South African electronic music. Through her eclectic, loose, and soulful DJ sets and @balamii radio residency, Donwella expresses the depth and breadth of her love for music and delves into the rhythmic connections between different genres - always trying to pay homage to its origins along the way.
Donwella brings people together in intimate and well-loved parties and organises a participatory festival, where she teaches DJ workshops for aspiring womxn selectors.
“This mix is a little different from other MAJ mixes and zones in on one instrument - the trumpet!
Coming from a family of trumpet players, I’ve always been drawn to tracks where the trumpet shines. It’s the instrument that reminds me most of the human voice - it’s so versatile in its expression, from triumphant and piercing to warm and soft to haunting and eerie. In this love letter to the trumpet, I’ve selected some of my favourite trumpet-heavy records and trumpet solos from a global spectrum of music. We’ve got jazz from the U.S., U.K., Italy and Ethiopia, dub, highlife & afrobeat, salsa, a Cuban dub-step fusion, and even a dash of soulful drum & bass.”
