  • Merida, Yucatan is an incredible city, filled with jaw-dropping architecture, history, delicious food, and so much more to love. You're going to LOVE this city!
We're going to release our first email newsletter soon with mini travel guides, behind-the-scenes updates, pictures, and more. If you want to be one of the first to see it, subscribe here: aw194924.aweb.page/tangerine-...
We decided to spend a few weeks in Merida, Yucatan to learn what makes this Mexican city special. As it turns out, there's quite a bit to enjoy about the city, including:
    - It's considered the safest city in Mexico
    - Merida is filled with impressive architecture and historic buildings
    - You can learn about and see almost 500 years worth of history
    - The Yucatecan food is nothing short of crave-worthy
    - The cost of living is relatively low
    - Merida has the 2nd largest expat community in Mexico
    - and more!
We think after watching this video, you'll agree that Merida is a bucket list worthy city that you'll definitely want to visit. For those who like to travel Mexico, it's the perfect combination of modern and historic with rich culture mixed in.
During this video, we also bought some handmade shoes at Tags. If you stop into the store and mention "Tangerine Travels," Mauricio will offer you a discount. Here's their Facebook / tagsalpargatas

I had an encounter with US healthcare after a hit-and-run accident (I was on a motorcycle sitting at a traffic light, and a car came and ran me over), and let me say that the US healthcare system is a total disgrace and a complete scam. I was billed almost $20,000 for a few hours in the ER! After being released, I booked a flight to Mexico City, and got the surgery done on my leg in San Miguel de Allende for USD 200. US healthcare is organized crime.

My husband and I found ourselves in Merida 10 years ago while celebrating our 40th anniversary, we stayed in a wonderful residence close to downtown, it was attached to the Cathedral and had housed nuns back when, it was developed by two Irish world guides, it was fascinating and a short walk away from the many activities in the centre of town which were nightly, we watched an amazing outdoor ballet and a local comedian who was just killing it with the audience, we also took a bus to Progresso a beachfront town! Just wonderful! Highly recommend this location!

Merida has beautiful colonial architecture and lovely, lovely Mayan people are the heart of the Yucatan throughout. But Merida also has a lot of unappealing streets outside of the main arteries, lots of unrenovated cement houses, no grass or trees except here and there, cement parks. It's a cement town, and most of the year except for 2 months it is unbearably hot with 95F-100F+ temperatures. The mosquitos are so abundant you can't sit outdoors after 4pm no matter how pretty your patio might look. The street sewers back up when it over rains, you can rent your dream house and find out the first night that a mezcal bar is next door but no one somehow pointed that out before you paid your deposit. Bus exhaust pollution, grime, and yes, some gorgeous architecture. I've been going to the Yucatan incl. Merida since 2005! I'm not basing this comment on a one-time trip. I highly recommend you go, but beware the over the top "tourism" descriptions of the place, lol. Or of any place! Describing a destination based on just having discovered it is risky business for the audience, as good a business as it may be for the video tour guide. I think video tour guides would serve their audience by presenting the bad with the good, so people don't get themselves into bummer situations that could totally be predicted.

Of all your videos, this was probably the most difficult one for me to watch. For almost 20 years my wife and I have been returning to Merida each winter. We witnessed the very beginnings of the ex-Pat restoration renaissance and eventually bought a house in Centro and restored it. Because of this damneddemic we, like so many others decided to stay put this year. Watching this video and recognizing most areas you filmed in has made me realize how much Merida and our Merida friends are a part of us and staying home this year will be a lot harder than I thought.
Keep up the good work. Stay safe. Especially this year, I think many of us snow birds are going to be living vicariously through you. Thank you.

is it really as safe as ratings say?

    • @robfairbrother3014
      @robfairbrother3014 Před 2 lety

@@Foguete400 Merida is, yes. But as the city population has grown so have the problems. But nowhere near as bad as other cities it's size in the rest of North America. Not even close.
As an example, when we first started travelling there in 2003, if there was a murder in the city it shook up the whole city and it was generally referred to as 'the murder' since everyone knew which one you were talking about. Not bad for a city of 700,000 back then. Since then the population of the city has exploded and is now around 1.1-1.2 million including outside of the periferico (ring-road) around the city. But overall it is still super safe. Of course one doesn't want to lower their guard or flash jewellery and cash around. Common sense stuff.
The largest increase in crime seems to be break and enters. So if one is flashing their wealth, then they stand a much better chance of having their home broken into when they're not home.
If you're thinking about moving to or visiting Merida, I wouldn't hesitate to. What you have to be more worried about than crooks are the sidewalks. Those will get you every time.

We spent the past two christmases in Merida and couldn't have been happier. Two of my recommendations are Museo El Mundo Maya and Lucas de Galvez market downtown. Check out El Cardenal Cantina for botanas and meet Sayed the owner. Great spot! My least favorite things are seeing a Texas Roadhouse (on the north side) and the bus back to Cancun airport (even tho ADO buses are excellent).

Hey, I recognize that place! The pool in the background at 8:15 is the one in 2010 where one of our grandsons finally put it all together and learned to swim. We also decided we like the cops in Merida. We had been bugged for blocks by a wannabe "guide" scammer. Finally, I lost my temper and yelled, " Dejenos en paz!" at the guy and a couple cops on the corner came over and told the guy to get lost. It worked. We liked Merida a lot, but being inland and low elevation, it is oppressively hot in June. We escaped to the beach front town of Progreso just an hour north by bus. Progreso is our favorite community in Mexico because it feels so relaxed and safe. There are lots more physically gorgeous places, but we feel at home in Progreso and may even move there.

Thank you for sharing this video! My husband and I visited Merida in February through a cruise excursion. We absolutely loved it; however, the length of the excursion was not enough time to get more familiar with this historic and beautiful city. Your video definitely makes me want to go back!
