In this quick "Just One Thing" we cover Shooting the Fill Side or the technical term SHORT LIGHTING and how its a very useful starting point when thinking about how to light a subject.
Short video, but really great. What I like about these sort of videos is that they explain why you liked something. You knew the lighting was good in a scene, but you just didn't know why. Once you know, it's all so obvious! Thanks!
"Lights, Camera, TECHNIQUE!" It's so important amd helpful for us filmmakers to remember and fully utilize the different lights and lighting techniques. Keep doing what your doing and stay safe everyone!
Again, great explanations on topics I was oblivious to. I am not a filmmaker, but your presentations on so many levels (technical, practical, options, purposes, history, etc.) are fascinating. It is enjoyable to hear someone talk about what interests them enough to know a lot about when it is presented it so well and in a way that makes a layman feel like they understand something better than they did before.
Love it! I’ve been using this for a while mainly for interviews. I call it shooting into the shadow side of the face. I pretty much follow it to a tea, especially for my closeup (b cam) for interviews, otherwise their face loses shape. I also like to put the backlight on the “fill” side and further back, so their head has an outline
Thanks for sharing. Really helpful to hear the rationale and examples of using to advantage in the narrative (Queen's gambit part with the broad side being used for minor characters, etc). Thanks for what you do :)
Awesome! Of course this video also was shot with short lighting. Looking great! Thanks for sharing this! (Edited, the question mark was a typing error)
Tip for you indie folks: use negative fill and let the ambient light be your key. Its best utilized on tights. Less gear, less pollution to clean up, fast af and you look like a total pro. Don't over light, its a sign of inexperience!
5:16 I think this is for the continuity while keeping the camera pov's in the right measurement opposite to the previous shot, so you happen to have the light this way. They could have moved more away to have both in the shadows, but then that would be too far from the character, and here it seems like they want to be as close to the character as possible without making it their POV. or is it their POV, I cant tell : D
Yes I agree that continuity is definitely a concern especially in that particular shot and blocking. But they could have also lit in a way where both characters are in short lighting and still maintain continuity. There's a lot of ways to read that lighting - and some of the answers may come right down to practicality.

a common problem you have is that instead of going for a HDR foto is that the light is different split on the area (as this video from filmmaker IQ shows) if you use a flash with very much direct light you have the problem that the flash makes hard shadows: czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html also some can tell the light is getting less in the background so the location you want in your picture has very different amounts of light too useing a indirect light fix that problem a lot better , you have less of shadows and the flash light is not decreasing backwards so quickly(flash upwards): czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html even better is to have a lot of this indirect light, now very much is filled with same light and there barly shadows: czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html going for a HDR picutre to get a same result as in czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html is problematic can i fix the light so the light apears on the entire object not useing this method? (except cloudy days outdoor, there you also dont have this problem)
Your technical vids are the best John.

Keep it simple. Top tip sir.
Shame I have a face for radio.
The best advice is just to do it, try, give it a go.
Kind of needed this vid 2 weeks ago
This was very helpful basic stuff I'll never need but explained so well. But, who knows I might actually use it someday to make my zoom calls better.
this channel was so helpful (and fun too:) ) over the last few years to me. so thanks for making.:)👍
Great tip and video.

@@FilmmakerIQ You know, I agree with you saying this is intentional, based on the characters
I think I was taught that for fuller, rounder faces you should use short lighting, but for skinnier faces broad lighting was better.

Is that a green screen cabin?
a common problem you have is that instead of going for a HDR foto is that the light is different split on the area (as this video from filmmaker IQ shows)
if you use a flash with very much direct light you have the problem that the flash makes hard shadows:
czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html
also some can tell the light is getting less in the background so the location you want in your picture has very different amounts of light too
useing a indirect light fix that problem a lot better , you have less of shadows and the flash light is not decreasing backwards so quickly(flash upwards):
czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html
even better is to have a lot of this indirect light, now very much is filled with same light and there barly shadows:
czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html
going for a HDR picutre to get a same result as in czcams.com/video/NanX3fs5m7A/video.html is problematic
can i fix the light so the light apears on the entire object not useing this method? (except cloudy days outdoor, there you also dont have this problem)
How dare you upload in 23.976fps instead of 24! ; )
