      Aren't there good footware built to keep your feet warm? I mean you're showing us something that if it does improve the shoes, then the shoe manufacturers should do it.

      Test Channel Manufactures don't want to do anything more than they have to. It costs money to do these things and that cuts into their profits. I also doubt boot maunfactures actually make the insoles, they likely buy them from someone else, premade.

    • @mynameisgladiator1933
      @mynameisgladiator1933 Před 6 lety

      Premade, yes, of course - to specifications of the manufacturer. They could spec it to do something like this.

    Some of the special made Alaskin boots had something similar. Having chronically cold feet I tried wrapping space blankets around & in between wool socks & that helped a LOT. Thermal "wicking socks" a must in sub zero temps. Oversized boots helped too so toes could move/wiggle inside boots also.

    • @konchy
      @konchy Před 9 měsíci

      In between wool socks? Means 1 layer of wool socks outside, followed by a space blanket, then followed by another layer of wool socks inside?

    Easy to make and works well, as I can state from my own experience.
    The rest of the shade can be used to fabricate a sit-pad and / or a cozy for your pot/cup.

      Good tip and makes sense as it would help hold heat closer to one's feet. Probably worth trying each way as sometimes folks need special insoles to feel comfortable -- perhaps that's why John suggested putting them under the insoles in the first place? For me it would probably depend on the shoes.

    This is perfect for me! I have diabetic neuropathy in both feet, which is basically nerve damage that makes my feet “numb”, and I can’t feel heat, cold, or painful stimuli. This has resulted in a 2nd degree burn on one foot, simply caused by too hot of water in the bath tub. The neuropathy also prevents me from using commercial toe warmers, battery heated socks, and such. As I mentioned before, I can’t feel cold either, which could result in frostbite, in snow, ice, and cold weather in general. But the reflective nature of these cutout insoles should keep my feet at LEAST above dangerous temps, and prevent foot damage. I still won’t be able to actually “feel”any damage that could occur, and will require regular visible inspection(which should be performed with diabetes,anyway), but the risk of OVER heating by mechanical means will be zero. Thanks for the tip!! I’ll let you know how it works out!! Cheers!🍻

    I like the idea. One thing to watch out for is this working too well. If your feet sweat in the cold weather through physical exertion and you end up staying outside for whatever reason, it is likely your socks will be wet from sweat. Make sure to carry some additional dry socks. Lack of movement and wet socks will lead back to cold feet.

    A trick I've been using is to use the Styrofoam that makes up those trays that meat comes on in the supermarket. No point in using the sunshade as the silver needs space to reflect heat.
    Cut the meat by tracing the insole as in the video, but make it about a half inch larger.. Then cut out the larger shape, and then cut in towards the actual size.. so that it looks kinda like wings.. This allows the tray to cover the sides a bit too as each fin will take the shape of the boots upper, but only a half inch or so Sadly they don't last longer than a weeks worth of wear but you can make a bunch up ahead of time and they weigh practically nothing

    So, even when I'm fit I'm a huge dude... and I was a post hole machine... even with 30-36" snowshoes on I displaced so much snow that it would often spill in over the top. While standard OR crocodile gaiters worked I found that Mountain Tool Insulated Super Gaiters were amazing... On the pair I owned, I also added some 1/3" closed cell foam to the toe box and it was so toasty...

    Wear polyester, black dress socks under wool socks. The poly will wick away sweat into the wool but the wool keeps you warm even when wet. Better than uncomfortable newspaper and doesn't smother your feet making them sweat more. It still allows "breathing room and breathable materials" in your boot. This is an Arctic warfare training tip from a training grounds I won't mention.

      Pat Ek yes, you can use one of those like a poncho by cutting a hole for your head and wearing it between layers as you shouldn't let the mylar come in direct contact with your skin.

    • @timschutte8310
      @timschutte8310 Před 6 lety +4

      Pat Ek no because that material is way to thin and will just bunch up into a ball eventually. good idea but the windshield sun blocker is a lot thicker.
      try buying ( Micky boots ).
      they are used in extremely cold weather areas of the planet. Martie on the TV show "Mountain Men " uses them in Alaska.
      also, you can buy electric warming wool socks that take a 9 volt or two.
      between those and the Micky boots you should have no issue down too around 30 below zero.
      if it is colder than that where you live, MOVE !!!

    Letter carriers working outside in -40 deg weather can use something similar for their hands: cut a hand-shaped palm insert from a party balloon or "space blanket"--metalized mylar--slip one in each glove. When used with hand warmers, such inserts reflect the heat inward and also spread the heat all the way to the finger tips. I have been told that they work "almost too well", even at forty below zero!

    Cool tip...another one is to put a plastic bag around your feet before you put your boots on. A thin plastic bag like the produce bags from the supermarket. I used to do this when playing hockey at outdoor rinks when it was REALLY cold.

      @mobiltec Před 8 lety +16

      +makrsk09 They are already charging WAY more than any of them are worth. I can understand this with Walmart boots. But the real thing should already have enough insulation to do the job.

    • @jamesritchie6899
      @jamesritchie6899 Před 8 lety +7

      +mobiltec Well, my experience is that really good boots do have more than enough insulation, but you won't fine a good pair for less that a hundred and fifty bucks, and two hundred and fifty is more like it, for top of the line quality. One good bott now costs more than I paid for my first car.

    • @mobiltec
      @mobiltec Před 8 lety +6

      +James Ritchie Well it sucks. And if people would quit paying these crazy prices to buy this crap, the prices would come down. The manufacturer or the retail end or the middle man is making WAY too much profit. Stop buying this crap and the price will come down. But alas, people won't stop paying the price. So I guess we are screwed.

      Heat rises as does moisture. Good boots have good ventilation with lots of breathable panels. If you put an insulated pad under your sleeping bag, while camping, do you sweat and get damp? No. All lined Gortex waterproof boots are the worst for damp feet if you are a heavy sweater.

    • @curtlewis2795
      @curtlewis2795 Před 5 lety +6

      I agree with Major Charles above. There's no reason your feet should feel damp from sweat with a reflective liner like this. Especially if, as the video suggests, you are wearing wool socks. Wool is the original and still the best wicking fiber. It transports perspiration from your pores while still in its vapor state and wicks it from your skin before your skin feels damp.
      By osmosis, the dampness then moves outward into the lining of your boot/shoe where it eventually vents to the atmosphere. Furthermore, even if wool becomes damp, it still insulates and retains body heat better than any other fiber I know of.
      Canoeing in the Minnesota Boundary Waters, we wore the cheapest possible canvas sneakers over a great pair of wool socks.
      In and out of canoes all day, ankle to knee deep in water still frigid even in Minnesota summers, our feet would be completely soaked all day while portaging from lake to lake.
      But body heat warmed the water in the socks and the wool maintained the heat even as our feet squished inside our sneakers.
      (Incidentally, we wore the inexpensive sneakers because who wants to ruin $150 or $200 boots by having them soaking wet all day and then drying-and-cracking when we took them off in camp, only to repeat the process the next day)

    • @curtlewis2795
      @curtlewis2795 Před 5 lety +2

      @Rick James Brother, first off -- there's no need to yell. Second, with all possible respect -- of course your feet will sweat. They'd better sweat. How else do you expect your body to cool itself? Even in the coldest weather, your body had better keep sweating or you will quite simply die. In winter, you may not FEEL like you are sweating because cold climes such as Minnesota are incredibly dry in the winter so perspiration evaporates in its vapor state so you don't feel liquid sweat. But you will still lose heat due to radiation or conduction. If layers of newspaper act as insulation (as they certainly do) I don't fault you for using it. You'll have to inform us if the newspaper will last through a multi-day or even multi-week adventure. I know from experience that two pair of wool socks (alternated daily) will keep feet warm and dry for weeks on end with no noticeable odor

    I would put the foil side down, as I do with sleeping mat too. Foil is a good reflector but also a good conduct. Moisture is such a big factor in keeping feet warm that news paper sheets work very well too, they keep feet warm for some time until the paper is moist also.

    i will have try this for myself. It seems plausible due to the nature of heat reflective material but its things like comfort and feel of the boot as well as bio mechanic change the added layer makes to the insole would create affecting the body in some way the makes me question the practical application. But i tend to overthink things a lot and ultimately write off many tips and tricks but this one seems so simple and plausible that i doubt either of the things i questioned would ever become an issue . Even if the do, if by doing this my feet being cold in harsh conditions is alleviated, the minor comfort issue would be a much less that the major comfort issue that cold feet presents.
