- BMW recall service detailed as well as stalling issue.
SERVICE ACTION: ABS Modulator Mounting Bolt
SITUATION
During assembly, an additional mounting bolt was installed on the ABS pressure modulator instead of a plastic rivet. This changes the vibration behavior of the ABS modulator. When the motorcycle is frequently used at very high engine speeds, vibration damage to the components could occur.
CORRECTION
The additional bolt must be removed and a plastic fastener (rivet) must be installed in its place.
PROCEDURE
For vehicles that are affected, please replace the bolt by following repair instruction “00 60 369 - Screw connection ABS pressure modulator”, attached.
SERVICE ACTION: WIRING HARNESS ABRASION PROTECTION
SITUATION
The engine wiring harness may chafe on the honeycomb structure of the frame. In case of damage to the wiring harness, the wake-up line of the instrument cluster will be damaged. The instrument cluster will no longer be activated with "Ignition ON”.
CORRECTION
Inspect the wiring harness for damage and install wiring protection as detailed in the enclosed Repair Instruction "00 60 358 - Retrofitting abrasion protection for wiring harness".
ADVANCED INFORMATION: RECALL CAMPAIGN 20V-XXX CHECKING BRAKE CALIPERS
SERVICE ACTION:
A visual inspection of the front brake calipers must be performed to check for staining or isolated drops. If traces of brake fluid are found on the outer surfaces, the calipers must be replaced. Calipers must always be replaced in pairs. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Hey mate! Another fellow S1000XR 2020 owner here from Italy! I'm having the same issue of the engine stalling at low speed (4 times in 1200km) and I just sent an email to the BMW dealer. I'll keep you posted.
Gorgeous bike brother, I love all the woods around your area too! We don't have much wooded areas where I'm at. Glad they got all those recalls sorted out, always something with brand new models. I'd love to test ride a brand new GSXR. Someday I'll get myself a brand new one 😁👍take care mate
Agreed. I typically try to steer clear of a new model for that very reason but selection and bike got the best of me this time around. I have always appreciated the GSXRs.
Alright, watched enough of your videos to conclude I like them. Subscribed now. 👍 And yeah, I didn't notice issues with my 2021st version yet...
I greatly appreciate your support and kind words. Glad to hear no issues on your end. Mine are sorted for now so all is good. I will keep the channel updated on this front once the nice weather returns...that will be a bit though :(
fellow '20 XR owner here.
I've only ever had the bike stall once during startup :(
Brake recall coming, i was told we're getting free Brembos!
Interesting. I haven't heard anything additional to this point and haven't had any troubles but I have heard dealers aren't letting the units out the door at this point unless they have been replaced.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown yep. Expect well get the notice in a few months
Nice ride out!
Thanks! I appreciate the support.
Had to replace my front callipers, and bike is now at the dealer for winter storage and their going to do the ABS and wiring harness recall while it’s in storage. I’ve had no issues with stalling but I bought the bike first of September and the weather has been cool. I will be keeping eye on this next summer. Thinking of flashing the ECU with the Brentuning tool.
Sorry to hear that the calipers needed replaced. I hate winter but will ride through it. Hoping it is a light one.
No issues with mine here across the pond, however the nights are drawing in and it’s getting colder so we’ll see what pans out. Also have given mine the ACF50 treatment which protects it during the winter, so hopefully no rust or corrosion..... will keep you posted on that !!
I am unfamiliar with that treatment. Is it something you did on your own or through the dealer? Sounds like a protective coating of sorts. Glad to hear yo haven't had any issues. Mine seem sorted for now so all is good. It didn't really slow me down much when it was a problem...just a nuisance. I appreciate the viewership/support!
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown
It’s a protective coating applied by a specialist supplier, it’s used on aircraft etc to stop corrosion. It covers the whole bike, is colourless and you wouldn’t know it was there. Hopefully it’ll save me money in the long run by reducing / avoiding corrosion. Compliments from across the pond, ride safe !!
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown Have a look at the BMW website under “Before Winter”.
They recommend there that we spray our bikes with bicycle gloss, an oily substance, which I am unfamiliar with.
I got same stalling on my 2018 Duke 390 just b4 it's service time, it lets me know it's not happy haha.... Got told the 1st service i had to wait till KTM rectified it. After 3rd still same answer so i just service it, but should remap it at some point.
Take care m8 : )
Yeah...I am going to see if the issue returns next summer. If it does, I will give them a crack at it. If that doesn't do it I will likely get a brentune
I hope they can figure out the issues with the caliper, and amazing how simple zip ties can simplify our lives so much huh. The caliper leaking is a little odd indeed too, and umm dangerous lol, but at least they are doing the right thing and keeping tabs on it.
That was a beautiful dam and if the fishing is good, I think we know why those bald eagles are there hehehe...
Great vlog , enjoyedm
Great fishing...I can't believe how many bald eagles there are around. Growing up I use to go out with my brother and dad and we would actively look for them and nothing. Now I can walk the trail by the dam and see 15-20. You can get within ten feet and they don't seem to care. It's an amazing area.
Thumbs up hope you can get it figured out catch you later
I think she is sorted for now, thanks brother.
Gotta love it when service can't recreate the problem, glad it all got sorted though!!!
Thanks man. Seems to happen a lot that way, haha. Having said that, I can't recreate it now either...haven't been able to for some time. Sorted...for now :)
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown Let's hope it stays sorted!! It sucks not being able to ride because of something stupid lol
Hi, I have a XR bought in June and I have exactly the same issue. Mine is quite frequent, every 500kms I have a stall. Always low revs downshift with clutch.
Last time I didn't notice it stalled and when I released the clutch the tyre gripped and the engine restarted again 😁
Hahah...I did that once...the good ole bump start. There is clearly a mapping issue going on but for now mine is sorted. I am going to keep on it. I will likely be reaching out to BMW North America sometime soon.
You have me puzzled now.
I do not have the issues you mention in your video on my S1000XR, and a Google search revealed that this recall of the S1000XR may only concern North America.
I started riding my S1000XR beginning of August when it was exceptionally(!) hot in my country, Belgium.
We had temperatures over here of between 35°C and 40°C, that's 95°F to 104°F.
Too much for my personal comfort, but my S1000XR shrugged it off.
Those data are still recorded in the "BMW Motorrad Connected" app on my phone.
I am going to send an e-mail message to "BMW Motorrad Direct" today to ask them about these issues.
They usually reply within 2 to 3 days.
I'll keep you posted.
Yeah...I would be interested if anything turns up from their end. I will be sure to revisit the topic next summer.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown I am not convinced that ambient heat has an adverse effect on the S1000XR, otherwise that bike would be impossible to be used in notoriously hot countries.
@@marcos.1771 Yeah. I’m not convinced either but it either ran in fully at around 2k which is possible or the heat is the only other obvious variable. I will have to wait to find out but problem solved for now 😎
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown What do you mean by “it ran in fully at around 2k”? 2k miles?
Ambient heat wasn’t an issue for my S1000XR at the beginning of August when we had 35 to 40°C in Belgium.
Don’t forget that the cooling liquid in the engine is twice as hot, even in the cold season.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown BMW Motorrad Direct in Germany replied to tell me that they have forwarded my question to BMW Belgium.
I now have to patiently wait for their reply.
The plot thickens...
I’m having the same stalling issue all the time, and the dealer is consulting with Germany to investigate. I’m in Australia, where it’s getting warm, but not what we would call hot yet. I haven’t seen a pattern linked to heat, but it’s certainly getting more and more frequent. Twice a day at the moment. Please let me know if you have any update on your queries.
Sorry to hear you are having this issue. As you can see from the comments we are not alone. How many miles/kilometers are on the bike?
Was there any resolve to the stalling issue?
I just lost completely the front brake for some seconds the previous days on my brand new s1000xr 2020. 0 front brake . Hopefully the bike stoped with the rear . 3000 kilometres . The dealer claims it is probably from that ABS issue. The bike is on the dealer right now . Let you know the next days
Man...that is crazy. Likely lost too much fluid out of the front caliper which was the big recall. Glad you didn't lose them in a bad situation. Keep me posted.
What id give for that weather right now.
Right? It is turning the wrong way...looks like I am going to get some properly cool to cold riding in soon.
Me too! We will have a few decent days here and there but it’s a long wait now for good mountain riding weather
Got a few things lined up in the coming weeks but luck is also a factor.
Lads, taking out the new GS R1250 next week so that should be cool.
I'm looking to buy a 2020 1000 XR but the brake recall won't let the dealership sell it to me until this is sorted out by BMW. They told me that last weekend
Interesting. It is a straight forward job and most calipers don't need replaced. The Modulator Bolt is a bit of a pain to get to so that took a about 90 minutes but nothing too serious.
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown Thanks for the note back. Two dealers told me the same thing - one in Nevada and the other in N. California. Hasn't put me off buying it but actually purchasing it is going to have to wait it seems. Good luck with the channel. I just found you and subscribed
@@chelsa1960 Really appreciate the support. Did the dealers mention what the wait is over? Possibly they needed to replace the calipers and couldn't get the part?
@@ThrottleBackRubberDown I asked them that but neither knew when it would be fixed. They only mentioned the brake fluid leak. The second dealership was an official BMW dealer only. Both told me that it was hurting their business because they couldn't sell a bike while a recall was in place. I will update this post next time I talk to them. They said to call back in a couple of weeks
Just buy a dyno tune or the Brentuning flash. Will eliminate all fuelling related issues. My Gen1 runs pretty lumpy on cold start, no longer the case with a reflash.
It's very unlikely that the dealer or BMW will be able to completely sort out any fuel mapping issues as they do not have the freedom to set ideal afr values in all situations.
Plus you get noticeably more torque/power, there is quite a big difference from idle between stock and Bren flash for example.
I highly doubt there is a modern production bike that I wouldn't want to do a safe reflash on, immediately after the run in period, provided it's not just a cheap commuter.
Yeah...I have not personally ever done a Brentuning flash. I think I am going to wait until I see how it performs next summer. If the issue resurfaces I will cross that bridge then. Thanks for the helpful follow up!
