  • Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian breed of dog also known as Italian Water Dogs and Romagna Water Dogs. Today, with many of the marshlands of the breed’s homeland drained, these dogs have found a new purpose in truffle hunting. Humans can easily train them to use their super noses for scent work.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about Lagotto Romagnolo that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Sporting Dogs
    Weight: 24 to 35 pounds
Height: 14 to 19 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 14 to 17 years
Lagotto Romagnolos were originally bred as hunting companions, and they haven't lost their ability to retrieve, even if it means jumping joyfully into bodies of water to do so. Many Lagotto Romagnolos naturally take to the water, and even if you don't plan to hunt, they'll still enjoy chasing down a toy in a good game of fetch.
With their high energy levels and active spirits, they'll certainly appreciate the physical and mental stimulation. It is important that Lagotto Romagnolos get proper exercise or, like many dogs, they may get bored and create their own fun by digging and chewing things they shouldn't. They have sharp senses, especially when it comes to using their noses to sniff things out. That is why they are bred as truffle hunting dogs today. They are easily trained for nose work, though they can also perform well in other tasks such as agility and obedience training.
When it comes to being a family pet, the Lagotto Romagnolo is an affectionate and laid-back dog, so long as exercise is provided in the form of at least one good, long walk per day, and preferably a game of fetch. So long as those needs are met, Lagotto Romagnolos are generally content, even when living in an apartment setting. Most of the maintenance required for a Lagotto Romagnolo will come from taking care of their coat, which needs plenty of grooming. They are loving dogs that are dedicated to their families, even children and other pets, though they do tend to bark at strangers who enter their territory.

My laggoto is pretty laid back but she gets very hyper and active in the evening (her devil dog hours) she loves tug of war she likes to play fetch but won’t always give up the ball she is very social and very friendly (sometimes too friendly) the only times she barks at people is when someone standing still but otherwise she loves going up to strangers and being petted and getting treats and playing with dogs she all in all she amazing dog 🐶🐶🐶

Our lagotto loved fetch. He never wanted to stop. We'd have to stop him when it was too hot. He went blind and would do fetch first by hearing, but eventually he would fetch by smell. He loved fetch. He was a sweet, wonderful dog. We miss him and want another lagotto.

My Lagotto girl will not chasing a toy in feach and seek but if you give her a new toy she will take it with her when she goes out and have it with her all the time also in side the house and she knows/remember if she has stuff out side. She is very clever and clearly the smartest of my dogs. She is a digger even thought she digs less now than she did when she was younger. She is a very happy dog, not very hyper but when outside she is playing and having fun, inside she is very calm.

But it’s very hard for her to stand still xD … so „stay“ is a command we have to work on ;)

We bought our first lagotto puppy 3 yrs ago.
He was perfect !!! He was our baby boy and a wonderful companion and friend for kids and families.
We moved from Canada to Florida when he was a few months old.
He was born with colon tumors and lost him a few weeks ago🙏🏻🥲
Did someone else had had this experience? We were told he is a pure bread.
Any help for our peace of mind is greatly appreciated.

I have this breed, this dog is really good i'm always with her. But if you want to buy this breed and are not active (or your family) please don't buy it. I had friends ho bought it and all had to give them up bicos they couldn't keep up! I mean we take walks every day and she is outside for 5 hours or more every day (not on a leash). If you can match their energy buy it you will not regt it this dog saved my life

Also they are very sensitive, so be sure it was taken care of in a good way before you buy it, or you'll regret it. They are not like goldies or labradors that will 'fully' bounce back

I have a four year old Lagotto, very affectionate and intelligent, but beware the coat is a nightmare. If you have enough cash to pay for a regular trim OK, but we do not. If she is in the field digging for moles, she refuses to come home until she chooses. I have had many different breeds of dogs in my life but I would never get another Lagotto.
