In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Spanish Water Dog that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: 40-49 pounds (male), 31-40 pounds (female)
Height: 17.5-19.75 inches (male), 15.75-18 inches (female)
Life Expectancy: 12 - 14 years
The inexhaustible Spanish Water Dog is a dual-purpose breed whose hallmark is a coat of wooly curls. Used as both a herder and waterfowl retriever in his homeland, this rustic charmer is a lively family companion and vigilant watchdog.
The unique look of these inexhaustible workers begins with the coat. It’s naturally curly and wooly head to toe, and when grown out will often form tight, tapered cords. In full coat, the facial hair covers the expressive brown eyes. Colors can be black, brown, beige, white, or parti-color (black, brown, beige, with white). “Rustic” is the word often used to describe the overall look of this sturdy dog of medium size (a male will stand a little under 20 inches at the shoulder).
The Spanish Water Dog is diligent, loyal, affectionate, and intelligent. They have very strong natural herding and guarding instincts, leading them to become the "self-appointed" guardians of their homes.
Spanish Water Dogs thrive on work and play. Their athleticism and extremely hard-working nature lead them to excel at any number of tasks. They can be wary of strangers, and early and continuing socialization with a variety of people and other animals is essential for a well-adjusted, social dog. Good socialization at an early age greatly helps them cohabit with small children.

I had 2 and they were the most loving and affectionate dogs ever
I have 2! The one is really smart and can do a lot of things and tricks, he’s 12 now
The other one is super energetic and doesn’t really know tricks but he’s really good with people and so sweet he’s 5
I love them sooo much
I adopted a Spanish Water Dog. She is super smart, very energetic an all around great dog. She has health problem with not producing enough pancreatic enzymes
How loyal, affectionate, and intelligent is your Spanish Water Dog?
Do they act like a self-appointed guardian of your home?
Let us know in the comments!
She does act like a self appointed guardian. Sometimes a real pain because she barks at slightest thing. She is wonderful!
Oh yeah definitely. She’s super loyal and protective. Has a doofus expression but she is smart, she’s such a Sweetie!!
Totally, forget Graham Hall and standing in front of a SWD. He launches himself at the window at the slightest noise, before we can even say no. Gives us minor heart attacks every time. But yes, I wouldn’t swap him ever, he’s my shadow.
My dog does need time to accept people around me, normally a couple of short meetings but besides that he is the most beautiful lovely intelligent dog I have ever shared my life with
Loyal, loyal and best loyal ever dog. Protective, sweet, joyful, energetic and intelligent dog. Needs an experienced owner to keep him/her happy and healthy. SWD needs lots of activity, and enjoys to please owners, working physically and mentally.
Guard dogs, family dogs, a "nose" dog trained as a rescue dog, drugs detector dogs, and a family dog.
Thank very much for making this wonderful breed known to the world.
I have the pleasure of sharing my life with a spanish ester dog. And this video sums up the breed very well. They are extremely kind and affectionate to rheir humans, They are clever and very funny. But They have to be active, or they can be one annoying. To me, it's the best breed in the world.
Best dog and I miss him every second
They are an amazing. My girl is open friendly cheeky athletic everyone who meets her loves her her health is great. And super smart easiest dog I've ever had to train
I have to say this a is a very informative and accurate video.
Cute looking 🐶
I have 2 swd!! and I have a dog groomer in Barcelona specialized in Spanish Water Dog
They are also Related to lagotto romagnolo (the Italian water dog my family has one) and I can see some similarities in their coats (as long as the SWD coats are kept short I wonder if they have any similar characteristics I would like to see
Great clip yes I own a girl in canada
Fun fact Spanish water dogs don’t cause any allergic reactions
Cap
I am allergic to dogs and bought Spanish water dog and when she’s at full fur she causes me allergic reaction, that’s why I like to keep her short. They are amazing dogs tho!
@@noname-bt9ky do you think it’s worth the time it takes to take care of it? i absolutely love this dog breed and i’m propably getting it so just your opinion, is it worth it?
@@minttupartala4937 No ite trimmaan lammas trimmerillä sen Turkin 2-4 kertaa vuodessa.
No deben tener rabo.
I have fully 5 month puppy this Perro de aqua Español and just wondering he is very activate puppy never like to rest. We do 3km short walking around the small mountain, and too much activate in our garden sooo much, all day long. Do you think we need to reduce this activate time? I don't know what is the remaining time to exercise for him.
Thank you in advance and your video is very good.
It will get better with time but running will not tire him. You need to combine, either sport and smell games or long walks on streets with lots of smelly stuff. I walk one hour every morning in Barcelona to get him tired through smelling. Then another walk midday short and one hour afternoon. You need to play smell to tire them. Exercise is not enough. For example you hide a small toy and make the dog look for it. You will be surprised how good they are at that.
My SWD is completely devoted to me. She is my child. She isn’t very human friendly with strangers. Her curls take a lot of work, but she looks like a teddy bear.
Mine warms up to people in about five mins if there are treats involved and I am present. But she’s dead scared of other dogs, even though I tried socializing her since she was very young… hope she grows out of it with our daily walks to the park…
I also call then Reggae Doggo 😂❤❤
Rasta dogz!
I Got a spanish water dog
mine is very intrigued by white cloths and is taking it in the mouth
I want one but kid has bad allergies to most dogs? Any ideas on what to get?
Spanish waterdogs don't produce allergies :)
They are hypoallergenic, they do not shed hair. that's why they have to go to the groomer because otherwise they get knots. I have clients who are allergic to the epithelia of the hair and with the Spanish water dog they do not have any allergy, but they must be purebred
@@missgretaandfriendsespecia4516 I too have a six year old SWD , I am allergic to all cats, most dogs and can’t breathe around horses. I’m good with my SWD. However, my advice after owning one for six years is don’t have one for this fact only, they look cute, but are very intelligent, and will learn bad habits just as easily as good. You need time and advice to train these wonderful dogs.

My Spanish water dog has a short tail but I noticed in photos that’s some have long tails why is this the case?
Spanish water dogs can be born with either of 5 variations for a tail. no tail, short tail, stub tail, curved or long. stub, no and short tailed dogs should be bred with long and curved tailed dogs to prevent spine complications.
@@felicianordstrom9797 ok my dog has a little stump
I have a medium size Poodle that I'm sure has a extra ordinary amount of water dog breed into her . she is very protective, and has extremely tight curls she is strong And love the beach she is now 11 years old still Strong
Poodels is a type of waterdog
My SPW is everything but a guardian dog, she will help a thief to rob the house
I HAVE ONE .IS REALLY LIKE A DESCRIPCION IN VIDEO,YOUR COLOUR IS BLACK.
And what’s the measurements for the rest of the world who has abandoned stone age units?
My SWD is about the height of big collie, for a male, about 20kg, for a female around 18kg. However, I’ve seen some of the breed grow taller, my dogs brother is a good 6cm higher than him and his favourite trick is to jump on the kitchen work top to pinch food and jump to his owners face when he’s happy. They will jump medium high fences easily, best for a 1.6 meter fence or more.
