- Portuguese Water Dog is a super-smart canine companion that once served as crew on fishing trips, retrieving lost gear and herding fish into nets. Known variously as the Cao de Agua (dog of the water) and Portuguese fishing dog, these canines are a calm, intelligent, and - of course - water-loving breed.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Portuguese Water Dog that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 35 to 60 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 5 inches to 1 foot, 11 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 14 years
Portuguese fishermen ranged from the Atlantic coast of their own country to the frigid fishing grounds of Newfoundland in their quest for cod. Assisting them were medium-size, curly-coated dogs who drove fish into nets, retrieved lost tackle and swam messages from boat to boat.
Porties, as they're nicknamed, are fun-loving and friendly. For an active family, especially one with a swimming pool, nearby beach, or boat, they can be an excellent choice. They thrive with training and are well suited to dog sports such as agility, obedience, rally, therapy work, tracking, and water work. No matter what activity you choose, make sure your Portie gets daily exercise - without it, they can become frustrated and destructive. Swimming is a natural choice, but they also make great walking or jogging buddies.
The Portuguese Water Dog has a lot of great qualities: he's tireless, and fun-loving, with a great sense of humor. He's also smart enough that he can out think you if you don't stay a step ahead of him. You may frequently find yourself laughing as he plays the clown to get your attention. You'll find a range of temperaments in Portuguese Water Dogs. Some are strong-willed, some are laid back, and most fall somewhere in the middle.

Our PWD is a wonderful, easy-going lovable pet - great w/the grandkids and family ! He does like to have the last word tho , especially when being reprimanded , but very easily trained and very loyal !! We have had several dogs but this guy so far has the best personality of all . He likes the ocean but not a fan of our pool!
Yes
Omg Lil I feel the "having the last word" ours has the biggest attitude I have ever seen, it's honestly funny & cute.
I had a Pwd for 12 years and he was terrified of water
Irony
Ahahaha I can relate to that. Not specifically with a Pwd, but same happened. I was totally fine with it. Dogs also have their own personality. Still made me laugh, and I made sure to make fun of him. “You were supposed to be a better swimmer than I am, yet I’m surprised you didn’t die yet of thirst”
I got two of them and they are soooooo cute
We have had 3 so far. Would not really consider another breed. The first was great companion just over us to death and would play for ever, the second was the genius and had to analyze everything and always worried, the one we have now is a bully but loves us the just the same. The one thing they all had in common is if they did not feel like doing something they would let you know and do it on their terms. The thing I remember most about why we were drawn to them is the look in the eyes like there was something there more than just a dog who wanted to please. Find a reputable breeder through the PWC of America. That and let the breeder pick your dog . I made the mistake on the last one and got a pig then counter surfs like no tomorrow. I love them all just the same.
How tireless, intelligent, and fun-loving is your Portie?
Let us know in the comments!
2-4hrs a day of exercise and training. Our PWD is an EXCELLENT trail dog. From walks with the new born to following on my Mtb. He cannot resist to go for a splash when near by any water
@@BisyBackson365 How easy would you say they are to train? I would really enjoy not having to keep one on a leash living in the country. But if I need to I don’t have a problem. But I wanna train it to stay close first.
@coked-upcat924 we have had ours for 2 years now. He is very easy to train. All of the hard work truly doesn't pay off until about 2 years old. The personality is like a mix between a golden Retriever and a Border Collie. He is NOT an easy dog have (we also have a 1 year baby). But he is also wonderful. Off leash mountain bike rides. Off leash walks to the coffee shop. I tell him to stay at the door and he does. We play fetch in our front yard every day. People/bikes/dogs walk by with 0 problem. In the end, he seems to require 4 hrs a day of dedicated time. Walks, training, free play, snuggles. If he doesn't then he gets into things to "trade". I'll take your shoe. Bring it to u for a treat. Then I'll take the pillow of your bed. Bring it to u for a treat. Take the baby toys. Bring it to you for a treat.
@@BisyBackson365 That’s really adorable. Thanks! I was sure already but now I know I definitely want one
This video was awesome! We are getting one soon
Hello dear ,how's your day going?
How has he been?
My PWD just turned 9 yesterday!
I know a black one that's great at fishing is very nice and loves to play alot.
My husbands grandmother had one of these dog. Whenever we visited his family in Portugal his grandma's dog would always be by her side in the kitchen ready to eat any scraps and treats thrown to her. She was a really fat dog by the way however was super energetic and would run all over the farm before chasing chickens and playing with the kids. Her name was cariño which means darling :)
She was probably named Carinho.
The other spelling is Spanish
I have two PWD, they are amazing, they observe everything and follow me everywhere in the house, heheh, they are so friendly and very very energetic, this breed needs to play and walk everyday maybe several times a day, they get bore very easily and interrupt you barking to go out a lot. they are very attach to you and they like to sleep in your bed, very attach to the family. I would recommend them and they don't shade but they need also active parents.
Nice
My grandfather had multiple of them, used them to fish and they loved life. My grandfather states is the best breed ever
I can only imagine how many times these dogs get mistaken for a “doodle” and I’m sure it infuriates the owner's XD
They get called doodles a lot
It's literally a daily occurrence...it is just annoying but I get it.
Omg I'm a dogsitter and one of my regulars are 2 Portuguese water dog and i cannot even tell you the amount of time I was asked are they doodles lol
Yes, we have a porty, he get’s called doodles and poodles
Best dog! I just picked my puppy 🐶
How is he/she doing now?
@@Carolina-rd3gh awesome!’n
They also make great watch dogs and the ones bred in Portugal can get much larger.
Yeah, my grandma had one here in Portugal and he didn't look like that.
Nice! They kinda popular hete in Norway, mostly cus of the «allergy!!!» not because of their skills. Great video showing the bredes abilities

OK, reminds me of our two American Water Spaniels in so many ways.
i have a Portuguese water dog she's upper cute and hipper she does like camping and walks except she is afraid of water cause when we got her my other dog was terrified of water she was my cousins emotional support animal (she lived with us for a time) but then she moved in with her bf so we had to take her but she will play in a kitty pool we got her she is less afraid of water and sometimes will play in the neighbors pool with us wow this was long sorry 😐
It would be great to get reference on research indicating that spaying/neutering prevents hip dysplasia and other diseases... my vet said it is best to delay that in this breed to prevent bone issues and hip dysplasia
Whatever breed of dog you have, its best to wait until they have their full growth on. Spaying/neutering to early can cause problems with the growth plates.
I’m sitting with both mine right now
My poodle was the same
Hey guys, do you think middle to large-sized apartment will be enough for him? Plus having 9-5 job, but would give any other free time to him. I had a poodle, which is like smaller and I would say less active version of PWD.
What do you guys think? Is it a good choice or should I stick with some smaller/less active breed? I'll be moving into a bigger house in like 2 to 4 years.
Thanks for the comments and take care you all :)
I’m getting one next week, and based on what I’ve read, if your the only one home and at work all day, I would get a less active breed
A cat would be happier being left all day, no dog wants to be alone 5 days a week, if you want dog characteristics, get Siamese cats, they're more dog like in nature.
@jesshothersall oh my. Didn't you hear the man , he wants a dog! Not a cat recommendation! If he wanted a cat he d go to istanbul
yoo whats your it sounds so good is it the shure sm7b or the 10 dollar bugha mic bundle
Most countries do not use inches.
Bro the health issues scare me I’m getting one on Wednesday and now I’m dcared
Don’t be! Best dogs in the world! Lots of work though!
my fist one will turn 11 in February and the second one turn 4 this december, very healthy and active dogs.
I disagree that early spay and neuter prevents hip dysplasia or other hip issues. It’s actually the opposite. Ideally you want to at least wait until the platelets close and your dog has reached maturity if you can.
"To know whether you have allergies with these dogs, is to spend time with them."
YOU BET I WOULD!!
Warm Atlantic Portuguese waters? Check your data mate.
Hello dear, how's your day going?
Why does this guy sound like crisfix
It is real they not as loyal than others dogs ?
Every one looks exactly like mine
My portie does not like water. At all 😅
Dag
They barely shed their hair like humans
People who get Doodles are so frustrating as they don't want to get a Poodle for some stupid reason but want a mix of it. Completely being ignorant to the fact there are many breeds that look like a Poodle but aren't a Poodle.
Actually spaying or neutering a dog BEFORE it gets its full growth can cause it health problems. Claiming that spaying/neutering in the first year will prevent joint problems defies all common sense and logic.
Can't do the voice
The first time i saw a pad I thought it was a bear.
Are you holding your nose while talking?
My Portuguese, water dogs are not that smart because the older one rolls in poop and hated baths and the younger one eats poop and throws up every time
