Shoutout to Thangs.com for sponsoring the September 3D modeling challenge. Up for a challenge? ➞ bit.ly/Sept3DChallenge
Print-in-place 3D prints are super fun! Learn how to design a gyroscopic keychain in Autodesk Fusion 360, using only two commands!
This design includes two user parameters that drive the thickness and clearance of the design.

STL files? :) I thought we were onto 3MF now. All good though.
hehe.. was waiting for this. I did talk to Thangs team and they're almost done with 3MF file support :)
@@ProductDesignOnline good to know. I suspect that people will say STL as a default term for a mesh model.
I am a big fan of your channel.
As a side note, when F360 decided to make changes to their hobbiest license, I purchased the full software for something like $200/yr.
As my renewal was coming closer at the beginning of the month, I checked my license to see what to expect to be charged, and was pretty shocked that the renewal was silently updated to $500/yr.
That is more expensive than I was willing to pay, so I had to cancel my subscription.
Such a shame what they did with Fusion 360.
Aside from that, this is a great tutorial, and I appreciate everything you do for the community.
Thanks, Kyle! Sorry to hear you experienced that. You should contact Autodesk support (if you haven't already). I know many folks were able to get grandfathered into the original license price, but not sure what the rules were/are about that. You may be able to get it renewed at your original price.
They also run 30% off sales every year (a few times), including an extra discount for the 3 year plan, which is a good deal (when it's available).
if you have a university of college email you can claim a student account which is free
Fun idea! There were a few ways that you layed out the parametrical realtionships that are different from how I would've done it and I think your ideas were really interesting to see. Thanks Kevin!
This was a really fun design and print on a Sunday afternoon! Thank you for the clear instructions to follow in Fusion360. What's even better - it worked! It was so exciting to pop it off the glass build plate and see the rings spin in place! I rotated the key ring hole 90 degrees to that it lines up in the Z axis direction, which I think would help it to print better. Keep up the great work!
Awesome! This works, indeed! I knew about print-in-place but never tried it before. So this was my first attempt and the first print worked immediately & flawlessly. Fascinating! Thanks so much for sharing! 👍👍
Glad to hear that, Stefan! :)
Terrific video. Especially liked the creating and then canceling of the offset, clever method.
Cool! Thanks for the instructive video. I always use user parameters so I've pinned the shortcut to the toolbar.
Great tip! FWIW, I always record with the default settings so folks don't get confused :)
Hey Kevin,
I define a user parameter to locate an offset plane, for example, but the plane does not move when I change the user parameter value. Is it possible to do so, and if yes, how do i do it?
I learned the basic fusion 360 from other teacher but I want to learn assembly, manufacturing and onward. Plz suggest me from where I start in your channel videos. Waiting for your reply
Regards Basit
Good stuff, I will have to try that exercise.
I have already uploaded my first entry to the print in place challenge. What do you think about my Nunchucks ,they got ball joint.I am also working on my next entry which is watch winder very similar to this gyroscope.
Also I think Thangs don't support 3mf file format??
Just checked it out, those looks great!
re: Thangs, that's correct. They're working on supporting it and it should be available soon :)
Cool. I'm still getting used to constraints when compared to AutoCAD. It's hard to get used to something new when you've used the older ways for 30+ years.
Great video, learned lots of new things (old dawg here). Question: In order to create an STL file with all of the bodies, you need to be able to select all of the bodies for the 3D Print command. I am only able to select a single body.
Ah, found it. Not intuitive. You can't use the 3D Print command, you need to select your bodies, and then Export from the main menu, save as binary STL.
Thanks once again!
Hello! Love your videos... so I was wondering if you would consider one on one tutoring in fusion 360?
Hi Santiago. I offer 1 on 1 tutoring for project specific workflows. More info here: productdesignonline.com/1-on-1-fusion-360-sessions/
I just bumped into this video. luckily I have one design ready. lucky me... would have missed a great opportunity😅
I had no problem modeling, but I'm trying to export the model to print it and I'm having trouble. From what I can tell, I can only export a single body. Is there a way to export all 4 rings into one .stl or .3mf file?
Found it myself, but for anyone else wondering, here's how: Right-click on the top-level component in the object browser. In the video, this is the top-left item named "Print-In-Place Gyroscopic K..." Select "Save as mesh." This gives you a dialog box that, among other options, will let you choose .3mf or .stl.
would this logic apply to trying to design a Collapsing sword?
Get out of my mind! Seriously, I was just considering a similar design but wasn't sure if I could pull it off.
how do you add the ring
Why did You turned off the chain selection while offseting ?
I’m wondering the same thing. Wether I do it or not it’s saying there’s too many constraints when I try to horizontalize the offset at 3:20
why not include a link to the .f3d file?
This lesson shows how to build it yourself in Fusion 😃
STL is included in description, as an FYI.
I thought we should stop importing STL files ? :D :P
Thangs is releasing 3MF support very soon :D
@@ProductDesignOnline haha good to hear was just kidding man great work 🙏😀
@@kinanhloubi1935 Thanks! :)
Took me until the end of the video to realize the rings are not held in place by pins
ah, great point! I forgot...I was going to call out that there are ways to make it with and without pins :)
am i the only one to dumb to figure out how to put the rectangle for the keychain on the end?
Dude my dumbass couldn't even get beyond the 2 minute mark. 🤣🤣🤣
