  • r/Askreddit Have you ever been pushed to your breaking point and you lose all will to help other people? The Reddit users in today's video certainly have. These people told stories of times when others pushed them so far past their limit that they snapped and completely stopped providing any help, like a teacher that got scammed out of $2,000 from a lying family, or a woman who pretended to have cancer to get sympathy money. Disgusting!

As a homeless person, if someone gives me food that's amazing, and honestly when I ask for help a lot of people are hesitant because they think I'm asking for money, but help and money are 2 different things

If you stand by the side of the road with a sign, try changing what it says to something like, "I don't want money. I want a job and need food". When people see that you're committed to picking yourself up you might get a few offers.

I once had this friend who got evicted from his place and was really good at playing the victim. I ended up getting him crash with me and it was all good, he was pretty clean, good cook. He'd shown no real red flags so I saw no issue with him "house sitting" during a trip I took with my parents. Well while I was gone he smoked all kinds of things (including cigarettes) in the place, moved stuff around, stole $300 worth of corsets, stole my violin, tried to sell off my wigs, stole my tablet, and stole my car which was later recovered a state over with a burnt out clutch. If my dad hadn't been there when we got back I would have forced him to stay until the police got there. Now any time someone needs help then they can figure it out themselves cuz screw that

I got stuck with an older dog (that I really don't like much) due to family issues. No one else can take the poor thing and I won't take her to a shelter (they're all closed anyway) and I'm not going to just give her to someone who might mistreat her. At least I will make sure she's sure fed, safe, warm, and taken care of. And don't worry, she's given plenty of affection too. Just because I don't like her much doesn't mean she won't be treated with kindness and affection. Her situation isn't her fault, and she is a living being and deserves dignity and respect. Even if I do do the things she hates, like actually getting her properly groomed so she's not a constant matted mongrel. She's actually kinda cute now.

@@GromMolotok I almost stole a dog once. I was at a friend's house helping him work on his boat, and I watched the kids across the street running around playing. They had a beautiful dalmatian that wanted so bad to play with them, but they just kept telling her "no" and pushing her away. They gave her no attention at all besides that. They finally ran inside and slammed the door and left the poor dog outside staring at the door. My friend went in to clean up so we could go to dinner, and while he was inside the dog came into his yard and was barking at me. She'd done this a couple times while we were working, but he shooed her back home. This time I just sat down, and she finally stopped barking and shyly came up to me. I let her smell me and she got close enough to me that I could pet her, and I swear she acted like she'd never felt a kind hand. When we left she ran alongside my truck for a while wagging her tail - when I came back to drop him off I didn't see the dog, but I was already considering coming back later to take her. A week later my friend told me she had died of parvo.

For me, it was when the friend I had for17 years basically just tossed all my kindness to her out the window because I couldn't let her stay for the holidays. She was so insanely rude, made fun of personal issues I went through and told me that I never did anything for her so I snapped and said to her "So, you get kicked out, shunned and basically black listed from your area and then I let you stay for weeks on end, giving you a house, food, giving you comfort and this is what I get in return for something I literally can't help. You're done. We are done. I'm sorry but I can't cope any longer. I wish you the best in your life. But I can't keep being your go to for sympathy especially when you don't share the same with me when I'm feeling depressed"

@@SierraHarmony Just because her former friend was rude and took advantage of her kindness doesn't mean she needs to get revenge on her. It's not like she killed her dog or something. Some people rather take the high road and not do things like that. I'm sure that former friend probably has already burned bridges with her family anyway. For them, it might be embarrassing to see their family's dirty laundry posted on FB for everyone to see. That revenge post could possibly even backfire and cause the family more problems ( like if friends of the family or if they are in a church and people in the church see it) the others could guilt trip the family into letting her take advantage of them ( most likely again). Im sure before she stayed with OP she probably used up her family first.
My point is that not all situations ( I can't think of many that this would be a good idea) require a shame post because things ended badly with a friend. I can see if stalking was involved, they are dangerous or if they were trying to contact people on your friends list to take advantage of them or to get closer to you but other then that I don't see the logic behind it. It not only makes them look bad but makes you look like a total asshat for posting it to begin with.

lost a friend over this one. i'm a professional costume maker, and a friend of mine wanted me to make her a full animatronic fursuit. (it was the purple rabbit from FNAF) basically, this thing had a head with a moving jaw, mechanically rotating eyes, and ears that would move, not to mention the entire actual suit. material wise, it cost me about 200-300$ and months of time and effort. i had to airbrush all the fur because i couldn't get it in the right color, i taught myself how to wire up servomotors. this was going to be a showstopper of a costume. and then she ghosted me. i was stupid and thought "hey, she's my friend, i can forgo the up front deposit!" when she finally got back to me, she said she was super sick, and couldn't go to the convention anymore, and couldn't afford the costume. i should just try and sell it someone else. (it was tailored to her size, and it's unlikely anyone could have afforded that as an impulse purchase anyways). to top it off, i saw her at the con on the first day, buying a ton of really expensive merch. remember kids, always get an up front deposit!

A permanent position becomes available in the very department he's assigned to--seems like he's a shoo in, right? Wrong. They hire a 21 year-old kid who hasn't even graduated college yet. Why? Because her mother is best friends with one of our Board members.

Here they always have signs and set up at lights, never near the restaurants which are all near each other and have a lot of green and parking lots around them. A lot of homeless people dont really care that they have no home, they just want to eat, drink, and some of them want drugs as well, other than that a lot of them dont have any ambitions in life. The ones who do, will be more than thankful for actual material things that will help get them on their feet and fix their own lives.

@@StuntsHrs And that’s true, but the job market is a difficult place and they’ll be much more likely to avoid hiring someone who looks homeless. All I’m saying is that money can contribute towards basic self care and temporary shelter so they can be more likely to be kept clean and have a higher chance of receiving a job is all. I never said they shouldn’t work, just wanted to point out why money is helpful, especially during cold winter months where a few nights at a motel can save their life. I’m not disagreeing with the fact that some people who end up homeless might have very low or no ambitions, but it’s also important to remember that doesn’t define all of them and it’s good to help whichever way you can, whether that be through giving objects, clothes, food, money, or just kindness in general.

I have a counter story- My family and I, whenever we have extra money laying around, make up homeless bag to hand out in our town. The have some weather appropriate clothing, toiletries, non perishable foods, and a bottle of water. With the bag, we always give a $20 gift card to a fast food restaurant. There are only a few homeless people in our town, and generally they stick to their same corner, so we end up generally giving away the bags to the same people. This one couple in front of a gas station always got one. It got to the point that they started to recognise our car. Even if we weren't pulling over to give them a bag, they would wave at us and smile as we drove past.

I have one of these moments. My former best friend had 3 kids. one school age and a 2 and 3/4 year old. She was working at a daycare and they charged an obscene amount of money for your kids to come to work with you, and since 2 of the 3 were that age, I offered to watch them. I offered for $50 a week because I didn't need the money, she insisted on $100 a week. I was potty training the 2 year old, teaching her to talk more clearly on ABC mouse, helping the 3 year old advance on there as well, and going to another town 15 mins away each way to pick up her other kid at school every day. I also paid for her kids bday party at chuck e cheese because she was having a hard time and couldn't pay for a party at the time. (She didn't ask, I just told her we're having the party, even pawned one of my rings to pay for it). Bought the kids their own Christmas trees because they all wanted a different color and all wanted to decorate differently, so I got them all little 4 foot trees of their own. I let payments slide when she couldn't afford it because something came up or she wasn't getting enough hours., and occasionally had to take the kids to work with her for a day because I was sick or had an emergency. (They charged for each day she took them and for each kid, so I tried not to make her do it) eventually she was over 700 behind in payments.....which I was honestly fine with....we'd figure it out, she's my best friend and I adored the kids. Then out of nowhere she ghosts me, deletes me on facebook, wont return my calls, nothing. just cut all contact. I'm not sure what happened because she wouldn't talk to me, but she just vanished...with the kids. never paid me the rest, nothing. I ended up losing the ring I pawned cause I couldn't pay to get it back...was going to use my next payment to get it out. After that I stopped helping people and pretty much stopped caring, because that just about killed me.

My brother always pawned my niece onto me while I was gaming.
He'd walk into my room, see I'm just on my PC or Xbox and sit my niece down and announce that Aunty So-So wants to hang out.
After months of him doing this and me asking about getting paid, his response being "You just play games all day, you don't need money. You can watch her."
Meanwhile he's in the living room doing the exact same thing as me, gaming.

The fake cancer story reminds me of how in my friend group there were these 2 girls that had been friends since they were very small, we'll call one F and the other L, and a few years ago everyone dropped friend F because she was lying to people about having skin cancer so she can try to get money. She especially tried to shake down friend L because friend L had worked a lot and has a lot of money saved up and friend L had lost her mom to cancer when they were in middle school. Friend F just wanted the money to go see her british boyfriend overseas. What baffles me is that friend F is a catfish. She's not conventionally pretty, but I know she always edits the absolute shit out of her photos to look thin and curvy (like she goes from a size 18 to a size 6 with facetune). Idk what her endgame was with that boyfriend. We dropped her as a friend bc that was sketchy and fucked up behavior and we'll have absolutely none of that.

Have an iron gut and understand you can't help everyone. I worked a place that on the outside made it seem like they cared and were for emergencies but behind the scenes, no one really cared. Everyone had a fake bond with clients and when an emergency came, they rolled their eyes.
I remember a frenchie i adore got bit by a dog pretty badly and rushed to us in hysterics and tears 15 mins before closing on a not so busy saturday. I went back to check on them and the doctor told me to say he was gone.. To say he left 15 mins early.. a long time client with a shaken frenchie covered in blood.

IIRC, the guy was depressed or had some other mental issues, and the mom was elderly and maybe somehow disabled, I'm not sure, but I understood they did actually need help, but it was *so draining* for my dad when they kept turning to him with *everything.* Dad is the sweetest, kindest person, and it's really hard for him to say no. It hurt seeing him that tired every time the phone rang and after those calls.
This went on for years. I don't know what evetually happened, maybe they moved, found help elsewhere, or died, or maybe dad finally managed to tell them to stop using him for everything. But I'm so happy it's over!

This started early october. I used to hold a door open for nearly everyone. The reason i stopped was because my 'friends' would call me a simp.
Another story is in are school due to the covid 19 issue my year group where put in to a small part of one of the halls.because of this the school brought chair in which we had to stack up at the end of brake and lunch. But when i would stand up at the end all my 'friends' would stack the chairs up on mine and expet me to carry them it annoyed me because non of them ask me if i could or said thanks . What made it worse other kids who i did not even know would start to stack up for me to carry and on a avg. I would carry 20 chairs a day. Then due to the amount of chairs i was carrying i started to get back pains. To stop them from doing this i went and sat with my other nicer friend ( who is a girl, im a boy, this is important ) becuse i didnt sit with them any more they herassed me and my other friend on a group chat .
*rSlash if you would like to see the message i can email screenshots.
Edit: i didnt classify what i ment by herass me and my friend (for simplicty i call this friend G and the 'friend' W)so a exsample is because i heavier/ overwight then someone else my age. So W added me and G to a group chat and compired us to muscle man and starla from regular show.

If they try the chair stacking thing again, walk away. Don't say anything to them, just walk away. If they call after you and start calling you names, tell them it's their chair and therefore their responsibility, and that you're not going to help them until they learn enough manners to ask you for help without taking advantage of your hospitality. Also, people who talk shit online when they can say to your face are scared they'll get punched. So not only are they rude and entitled, they're also cowards. Keep your chin up.

And as far as the chair thing, simply pick up one char off the pile, state that you are responsible for only one chair, and walk away with it. Let them sort out theirs. They will figure it out. You do not have to be thoughtful regarding the people that disrespect you. Simple base courtesy, base politeness is all that is necessary. I've been taken advantage of many, many times, but the following 2 stories ended my desire to help anyone any longer, and both stories involve members of the same family. First is about the mom, a woman near my age. We became friends because her youngest son (18 years old at the time) went to school and was friends with my oldest son (17 years old at the time). Things were great at first -- we had dinners together, watched movies together, played karaoke (on her PS2), etc. Within a month or so she started asking for things -- little things at first. Like can she bum a cigarette (I smoked then, for about 5 years, and have since quit), can she have a few rolls of toilet paper, can she have a few cans of soda. She was my friend and I wanted to help. But then things started to escalate. She needed money or she'd be evicted, she needed food or she'd starve, she needed diabetes meds and testing supplies, etc. It took longer than I care to admit but I caught on eventually. I stopped answering her calls because EVERY call was her begging for stuff. So she started bugging me by Facebook Messenger, starting off by asking how I was but then within seconds would start begging for stuff. It was like asking how I was was her opener, and it didn't matter what I said in response, she'd then jump into begging. I could have said, "I'm bleeding out my eyes and I'm seconds from dying." She'd just reply with, "Oh, that's too bad. Listen, I need..." I stopped even looking at her FB messages. Then she started harassing other members of my family on FB, making it sound like she was having an emergency and it was beyond important that she talk to me. I told all my family to ignore her. She eventually stopped contacting me, but it took MONTHS. --- The second story is about her son, the same one mentioned in the above story. This was years later and the 18 year old was then 22. He got kicked out of a room-for-rent situation and asked if he could crash at our house. We live in a mobile home community and they have weird rules -- you can't have overnight guests for more than 3 days in a row, and no more than 20 total overnight stays in a month. So I told him this. The only way I was allowed a permanent roomer was if they were my legal caregiver. I am disabled (hence the 'OnWheels' in my name), so I offered him the job. He agreed. The first few weeks were great. Then he kinda stopped doing stuff, or would do stuff poorly. Then stuff started turning up missing, like a digital camera, an older camcorder, 2 computers, cigarettes, food, etc. Then HE would turn up missing, for days at a time! One night, I felt like something was off and I opened my eyes. He was standing over me, staring at me. I blinked a few times and said, "What??" He replied, "Do you want some pancakes?" It was just after two AM. I snarked, "No, I don't want pancakes! I'm sleeping!" He walked away but I had it figured out -- I left my cigarettes out on my night table each night... he was staring intently, watching to see if I'd wake up while he tried to steal my cigarettes. This went on for a while but it's hard to fire people who live in your house. We then learned that he was on meth and was stealing from me so he could buy drugs. He eventually left on his own... his room was beyond God awful and WE had to clean it because he refused to. He's since apologized but I can never trust him again, or anyone, really. They weren't the only people to take advantage of me but they were the worst.

Us Females and the Drill Sgt on Night Duty were super confused cause we heard nothing. The guys were insistent, so the Drill Sgt woke everyone up and we searched outside. Found nothing. Nobody but the males had heard anything. This repeated a few more times randomly throughout the Cycle, and it became one of the Ghost Stories of Charlie Company. To answer Dabney’s question, I once knew this girl let’s name her C in primary school. I tried several times to be her friend despite C persistently bullied me but those efforts went into the bin after she told me to “passionately hug” my friends (NW, at the time until he would bully me in high school, and BH for short) I immediately thought “stuff you, C, I’m telling” and told a member of school staff. I ended up giving her the cold shoulder for the rest of the school year

Four years back, we helped my dad's mum move into a housing shelter for elderly, (think two storey flats attached in a square) and a year in her living there, it snowed really bad in December/January time.
She couldn't leave her flat because she was eighty odd and complained her legs hurt.
We offered to buy and deliver shopping that week.
Then afterwards the old MIL liked this system, so we continued on the promise she resumes paying her own debts or rent (she always complained she didn't have enough money to pay for bills and shopping).
Six months later, something like that, my mum went down to drop of shopping and found out that old woman had opened a second bank account and instead of paying bills was pouring pension money in there- she already had an ISA.
Mum went ballistic and told old MIL that we were never buying her shopping again. I had never seen mum so angry.
However due to Covid, we have to deliver shopping to old woman but this time she has to pay us back for every trip and mum makes sure of that.
Basically we couldn't trust her to keep her promise again after that.

The next day, he saw the same people he gave those bricks SELLING them. Their house was destroyed, the guy knew how to make a house, but decided just to sell something that my grandpa donated. You can imagine his look when he was asked for help others after that.

A woman posted on a Facebook group, asking for winter jackets for her children. I had her meet me at a consignment shop, and let her pick out jackets for all 4 of her kids, as well as herself and her husband. I also let her get everyone hats and mittens. We parted, both happy. A few weeks later, I was advertising that I had some blankets to giveaway. She asks for them, and I said she could come by to pick them up. When she arrived, all 4 of her children were in the car, all coatless and shivering. She must have returned the jackets for money as soon as we parted, after our first meeting. She later wound up in jail, as an accompliace to murder.

Holy hell, I feel the veterinarian post the most. If we say we cannot get you in and refer you to a different hospital, there’s a reason why we cannot get you in. The holiday season brings more appointments and less patience from clients. Make appointments early and be patient with us as we work to take care of your pet. We know you are stressed, don’t take it out on people trying to help you. One rude client can destroy a person trying to help.
THAT is when I say, “F*** it, I’m done.”

If all they want is money to feed their addiction they will act like the guy in the story.

I've seen people under freeways ask for money with more humility than that. I never felt so unmotivated to help someone 'til right then. I gave her $10 and didn't say a single thing afterward.

my "f*** it i am done helping others" moment was when i was going to the store, and there was another woman, she had three kids with her, and had a homeless sign............i had just purchased a mobile home with 4 bedrooms and since it was just me, i decided to allow her and her kids to move in with me for a month, rent free.......as supposedly she was going to get a new apartment the next month........so i figured "just temporary, and i will be doing a good thing for others" oh boy........was this the biggest mistake of my life.......within days, strange men kept coming over looking for her, weird smells coming from her room........and just when i thought it would not get any worse.......i had a fire in my home, emanating from her room........well after the smoke had settled, they found a meth lab in her room.......she had converted her room to a meth lab, and moved herself into what was supposed to be my guest bedroom for family.......which she also trashed.............and that was not the worst part......she told the cops I WAS MAKING THE METH!!!! so guess who got arrested? Thankfully after a drug test i was released and that was the end of that.
karma came though, thankfully, and while i am not a fan of wishing ill on people, i was super happy to hear that her and her brood of entitled brats were involved in a car accident........she was badly injured, and they found she had meth in her system, in her car, and even had it in her kids backpacks.......so she got like 40 years for multiple counts of possession of illegal substances, her kids taken from her, and those kids placed in foster care which got their heads out of their butts, and her son now is working at a car dealership and keeping his nose clean........he appologized to me for how his mom behaved, and i said i forgave him, but she got what she deserved and that i was happy he made something of himself........he said nothing of what happened to his sisters, i can only hope they made something of themselves too
To this day, i refuse to help homeless people, i wont even give them money, but i will hand them job listings from the news paper :)

The eating about vets is people view them as being similar in terms of medical costs. When the reality is their insurance covers the majority of the costs, and they only see a small portion of the cost. So they freak out over the high costs, yet have no idea how much medical coverage really does cost.

A lot of people think that homeless people who throw away/don’t accept food, are being choosing beggars. But at some shelters and through experience, they learn to not accept/eat the food because of jerks who like to try and poison homeless people. Which is awful to think that despite their hunger, they could be risking their vulnerable health by eating food given by a “Good Samaritan”.

Ah, yes. When I was a little girl, my mom had a revelatory moment in which she wanted to repay life for the luck she had those past years. She started helping a small group who assisted people who were sleeping on the streets; they cooked them warm meals and started funds to buy stuff they might need, like sleeping bags or extra sheets... But, yall know that saying? the "some people are beyond our help" thing? Well, that. Many of those homeless people started asking for stuff like money for drugs, or started stealing from us.. the straw that broke the camels back was when Mom got a homeless young adult an interview in the company she worked on, it was for warehouse duty, she worked on air-conditioning equipment... and the dude never showed up, and later she found him doing drugs with the others.. I know, I know, it's a disease... BUT. It was so frustrating... So we both left, and started helping on a dog pound. Animals are way better than people.

These people in general just randomly stopped caring about me or my project, completely stopped interacting with me the same way I interacted with them, once other and bigger artists appeared. In the end I was unknowingly used as a source for ideas and it really broke my spirit about how I view my art. It hurts me that the ideas I take so long to develop and design to just be a bit changed and then used and I don't even recieve credit for it :(

True rental centers will definitely way overcharge you in the long run, but for someone with a low fixed income, rental businesses are an affordable way to get some nice thing, I get 780 in disability, and with help from Aaron's I've got a nice touch screen laptop, a ps4, a $1000+ couch, a nintendo switch I'm still paying on, and a 75 inch tv, as long as you budget it right, it can be a great way to get nice things that you otherwise can't afford, or as my gma would put it, I'm able to get champagne on beer money

My only complaint with the rent-a-centers is, at least here in NY, if you go on public assistance you're required to sell off your luxury items and live off that money before assistance kicks in. So you really can't own stuff like 72" TVs, etc. But, you CAN rent them!

I really appreciate vets. The vet that treated my gerbil has stayed past closing time a few times treating my Rio and he was always trying his best to help the little guy. Vets should get the same respect doctors do. Animals are just as valid and to their owners, pets are a part of the family. If vets weren't around, our pets would die because of things that can easily be treated with medicine and proper knowledge (my vet showed me how to give my gerbil his meds and told me what to watch for to determine if the issue happens again).

I'm going to school to become a vet tech, and I just wanted to thank you for mentioning that the vet medicine field has one of the highest suicide rates of any job field. Not many people know that, and people can be beyond horrible to the staff at vet clinics/animal hospitals. Between the long hours, not-so-great pay, the horrible owners, having to deal with a lot of death and seeing the worst actions of humans, it really takes its toll on the staff. If you're a pet owner, please be kind to the staff of your clinic. And as much as vets and vet techs would love to be able to provide their services for free to most of the people who come in, they can't do that because they have bills to pay and if they don't get payment from you, a person who *can* afford the extra fee(s) they won't be able to help anyone. If they have to charge a fee for showing up right before closing or any other kind of fee, it's not because they're "in it for the money", animal hospitals don't have the payments from insurance companies to pay for supplies, utilities, upkeep and so on, so yeah sometimes there's a bit of an extra charge because they depend on payments from the owners to keep their business running. TL;DR don't be a jerk to the staff at your vet clinic. They work long hours, get crapped on a lot, rarely get truly thanked by people, get paid nowhere near enough for all the work they do, but still keep coming back day after day because they love animals.

We had to put down a 2 year old puppy that we had been treating for liver disease and an 8 week old kitten that had an upper respiratory infection that wasn’t responding to treatment. We also saw a lot of animal neglect going on, but our state has almost no laws against animal abuse. I imagine working in pediatrics is similar without the euthanasia.

He gave a story about how he once gave an unopened McDonalds burger to a homeless guy and after walking away, he turned around only to see the guy throwing the entire burger into the trash.
That’s why he said to give money towards charities and food to people who say they need money for. Charities often make sure that money goes to good use and you never know what will happen if you give money to someone on the street.
