    I’ve watched the movie and , in my gay opinion, the movie perfectly portrayed Freddie’s sexuality even though it wasn’t mentioned that much. It makes it clear about his sexuality but it doesn’t focus on it because being gay didn’t define who Freddie was as a person and this movie is about him. It was about him and Queen. So people need to stop complaining and just appreciate this great movie about these great legends
    Edit: damn thanks for all the likes and the agreement! Glad to see i’m not the only one who felt this way

    I dont care if they dont focus on his sexuality the reason mary Austin was featured so much in the trailers was because she was such a huge and important part of freddys life, he wanted to leave all his money and property to her, she was his best friend

      They downplayed his sexuality, forgetting how he had flings with both men and women. Freddie was a huge bisexual icon and that played a huge roll for LGBT representation in those days. How it should be, no one cares about his sexuality and focused on his talent.

    • @mieroth
      @mieroth Před 5 lety +8

      @@SS501Fan101 Freddie Mercury was definitely gay though, as everyone who was close to him confirms. You're not looking at the context of the situation, Freddie very much WANTED to be into women, and gay men from that time often attempted sex and relationships with women for that reason. But that doesn't change their sexuality. If he had been bisexual he would have married Mary Austin, who he called "the love of his life," but him being gay is what caused their relationship to end.

  • @SuperBettyxoxo
    @SuperBettyxoxo Před 5 lety +738

    Well, if Wikipedia is correct, Freddy Mercury said, ""All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary [Austin], but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else." If her place in his life was that important, I don't think she should have had a lesser role. It also states that, "In his will, Mercury left the vast majority of his wealth, including his home and recording royalties, to Mary Austin and the remainder to his parents and sister." I understand people wanting to be represented. But this is about his life or rather Queen. And that's how he felt.

    People need to chill out about Freddie's sexuality. They made clear that the movie is more about Queen than Freddie's personal life. The movie is more about how they became the legends they are now and how their music has managed to transcend generations. Futhermore, one's sexuality doesn't define the people you come to depend on in your life. That's why they're putting emphasis on his relationship with Mary Austin. He even called her his wife and she inherited most of his stuff. Besides, Freddie (and correct me if I'm wrong) actually never came out, he just was who he was, apologised to no one and left people to make assumptions. But sexuality is not a binary concept. It's fluid and not a label and you can be more than just "either straight or gay", ther's a lot of things in between.

      Agreed to 100%, his sexuality did not define him, but was simply part of him. The reason Austin is highlighted in the movie is simply because of her very close relation to Freddie. After all they were just about to marry as he announced that he was gay, and she inherited him! He did love her, just in a different way. Now how odd would it be to ask film sets to highlight people’s sexuality in every movie produced? Again, it can be part of the movie or character, but it should not be the major focus.

      She wasn't that significant...she was the only woman he married...but , loved men... Not enough to say he loved her...but he promised to take care of her...it was like a contract to make him look better....One thing the other members never mentioned...Why he wanted to change the name of the band..because he was searching for a new name in 1979....mostly cause he was tired of being ridiculed... Suppose you people should pop the question to May and Taylor and Deacon Huh ???

      Exactly what the remaining musicians(Roger,Brian and John) are wanting you to believe...so they can make more money from you...Freddy would have told them they were full of crap...because he ran the group and came up with the dialog they couldn't in the music...Because they were all back drop singers....Hardly the writer types....yes, Taylor was more of a writer than Deacon and May...So now they're writers which is what their lawyers told them to play out to the public for the money... They all have wants and high expenses... It's all part of play the game........ Which are Freddy's words....Tell them what they want to hear "Darling," he would say...

    Of course it's about the band as a whole. Their music was a COLLABORATIVE effort. Freddie was a genius. Brian was as well. Every member of the band had artistic brilliance. As for Freddie's sexuality, in the end, he identified as bisexual. Many biographies have documented the numerous male and female relationships that Freddie had during his lifetime. Most of these were by all accounts non-platonic in nature. The most lasting and intense was Mary. In fact, it was her that he left his mansion to. He often referred to Mary as his wife, even though they never officially married.

      @@michaellefort6128 you're welcome. the "freedom" part? It's a shame that in most cases legendary musicians are recognised as such after they've passed, & we don't understand at the time what they're all about and what their message is. I've been watching videos and songs and performances of Freddie- he was the ultimate free spirit. We make such a big deal about his sexuality, even now 27+ years later this seems to be the most contentious issue about the film. HIS point was that his private life was his business and he wanted to be known for his music and nothing else. If he was heterosexual nobody would be making such a big deal about showing that in the film. And I wonder..if gays want to be perceived as equal and no different than heteros, then why differentiate? 2nd: his feelings, his life, his thoughts really were all in his lyrics; even his sexuality was obvious in his attire- he didn't have to come out publicly and announce it otherwise he'd be known for THAT always. The focus was always to be on his music. I love another message he gave out: "don't be afraid of who you want to be, just don't be ashamed of anything. Just BE who you are". He was an anomaly in a world which dictates conformity so I admire him for sticking to his beliefs and credo. Ultimately it was his different-ness that made him stand out. But..too late. I wish he was appreciated more in his lifetime rather than hounded and teased. Another person who I feel was very much misunderstood in his lifetime was Prince. There's much to learn from people like them.

    To the people complaining about the emphasis on Mary Austin's and Freddie Mercury's relationship:
    Freddie and Mary dated for a good portion of the 70s and she was extremely important to him. None of his relationships with other women or even with other men even came close to what he had with Mary. He believed Mary was his only friend. She was the only person he trusted. For most of the end of his life and his struggle with AIDS, he dated a man named Jim Hutton and that was a very strong relationship, but nothing compared to Mary. He left to Jim about £500,000 and to Mary he left his estate, the rest of his money, his recording royalties and his cats.
    The movie does not "straight-wash" him. Mary was the most important person in his entire life. So, yes, they are going to put more emphasis on that than his relationship with the guy that can't speak English or the German lady or the guy that was violent and liked to bite Freddie. And even than on his Jim Hutton relationship. Jim was the closet he got to recreating what he had with Mary, but honestly, he barely came close.

    hopefully going to go see this with my dad, he's been a long time queen fan and he introduced me to queen when i was at a young age. So excited to see this and from what we've seen so far, the casting for this film is amazing and this is gonna be stunning (wouldn't be surprised if me and my dad end up tearing up)

    That "Sound-Alike" is Marc Martel. He is INSANELY GOOD, and even looks like Freddie to a degree (though, more conventionally handsome). Marc is NOT an impersonator, having his own career (his original band was Downhere, but he's doing solo stuff now). He does however front the Queen Extravaganza, and has performed with them since his audition with "Somebody to Love" went viral a few years back. I met Marc years ago in the Downhere days, and the man can put on a SHOW and is super nice. He's got a crazy range. I get pretty evangelistic about him, especially knowing he's involved in this film.
