    this archetype was the reason I got into yugioh. not because i like the archetype, but because I was given Thor Lord of aesir by some guy at a waffle house. I thought the card was super valuable, and didn't wanna not do something with it, so I decided to learn how to play. I've been playing lightsworns for 4 years now, and I have crippling depression.

    After re-visiting this card, I realised that there is nothing stopping your opponent from using Odin's (the monster on this card's artwork) effect to make it immune from the effects of GOTTERDAMMERUNG. This, essentially, make this card useless.

    5 years later, and the newest Nordic supports give us:
    - A spell card that can SS any Nordic mons from the deck, then banish itself to search any Nordic mons.
    - A tuner that can SS any Nordic from hand upon summoning, recover a Nordic from the GY, and are not exclusive to any Aesir, just like Vanadis.
    - A monster that can search any Nordic Relic and SS itself.
    - A continuous trap that brings back any Aesir from the GY at the cost of tributing a Nordic, and negates the entire opponent's field if you have an Aesir.
    Searching? Checked
    Recovery? Checked
    Less exclusive Aesir and main deck focus? Checked
    Better Aesir effect? Well to some extent with the trap

      @misterbadguy7325 Před 3 lety +21

      It's because of anime bullshit. They were played in a Riding Duel/Turbo Duel, which stops normal Spells from being used. So Mjolnir being a Trap in the anime was necessary, and for some reason they decided not to change it to a Spell.

  • @misterbadguy7325
    @misterbadguy7325 Před 7 lety +633

    I think the most indicative problem of the deck is Gleipnir, because it's the ultimate showing of how this Deck was just a nerfed 1-1 recreation of a shitty anime duel rather than an attempt to create something fun or balanced or based on Norse mythology. Why? Because do you know why it's called "The Fetters of Fenrir?" Because that's what Gleipnir was in mythology.
    When Fenrir showed up, the gods tried every single type of chain or bond that they could make, even chains with links the size of a man. But Fenrir, being Fenrir, could break everything in creation. So instead, they resolved to create a rope out of things that didn't exist in creation - the breath of a fish, the roots of a mountain, the sound of a cat's footfall, etc - and therefore, it would hold Fenrir until Ragnarok. So how would you interpret this myth into the real card game? You'd think it'd be a Fiendish Chain on steroids... but instead, it's a searcher.
    Why? Because Harald used it in the anime to add Fenrir to his hand. And why is it a Trap? Because it was a Riding Duel, meaning no spells. If not for that one scene with Harald, there would be no link between this card and the original myth, and it might as well be named Shapesnatch's Schlong for all it does to reflect mythology.

      @@heroeus8173 ehhh, not really, but kinda. German mythology does not really exist actually, since our country didn't exist long enough (at least not on its own). The reason many people associate it with norse mythology is a certain man with a weird moustache, who figured that militarizing german people would be easier if they considered themself some kind of repressed people who have a long history behind them. That's why the "Varus-Sage" was invented, which connected the roman warlord Varus, who was able to form an alliance with a germanic (not sure if that's the right word in english, but in german there's a difference between germans and germanics, germanics were basically vikings) tribe in order set a trap to a roman batallion that wanted to see him dead. Hitler and his followers reinterpreted this as the founding of german people, which it wasn't, just so that they could have the germans think of themself as a kind of "chosen" people. That's also the reason why Albert Speer, Hitlers architect, embedded a lot of norse mythology into his buildings (mainly reliefs at the entrances), so that this idea could be implemented in daily life.

    the issue I'm seeing with the Nordics is that they focused on flavour without any way of making it work for the game. For example, Valkirie is based on the valkyries, obviously, and her thing is whisking the souls of fallen warriors and bringing them to Valhala, as a valkyrie does.
    Tangrisnir and Tangnostr are Thor's goats, their thing in the mythology is that Thor kills them every night to eat for supper and then he lays out their pelts and bones overnight and they're alive again, this would have been more effective mechanically if they had an effect to come back from the graveyard on each of your standby phases.
    Garmr is based on Hela's dog, who guards the underworld, so him sending monsters back to the hand could be a reference to them being rejected from the underworld (idk, I'm stretching on this one)
    for a way more flavourful and actually useful way of doing Mimir, who's severed head rests in the fountain of wisdom and knows everything, would be for hm to let you look at your opponent's hand.

  • @Inhaledcorn
    @Inhaledcorn Před 5 lety +3

    Imagine this for support: Treasure Room of the Divine Relics (Continuous Spell) You can activate Trap cards that specifically list "Nordic" and "Aesir" monsters from your hand. Once per turn, during your End Phase, you can add one "Divine Relic" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Treasure Room of the Divine Relics".
    Additionally, expand on the Nordic Champions idea, having more mythological Nordic Heroes that can replace the specifics of Nordic Tuners, or Special Summon themselves when there are Nordic Tuners to make getting the gods out easier. Maybe having GY effects that also protect the gods or give them other effects.
    I mean, yeah, they made support, but that was *lazy* support. That was a brute forced attempt to make the deck into something viable instead of taking what's already there and doing something with it, or expanding upon an idea that might be there, like turning Fenrir and Jormungdr into Kaiju.

    they nurdered the nordic god monsters, as in the anime it was never stated they needed spcifically a nordic tuner of any kind, and also in the anime the revival effect WAS FREE. no banishing required, no nothing, they just automatecly brought themselves back. i mean theres a big plot point i remember from the anime where thor keeps getting blown up continually, then resurrecting and smacking yusei with hefty burn damage (hefty because they only play with 4000 lifepoints). if they had kept the nordic gods the same as they were represented in the anime completly, they would have actually been pretty good in my opinion, especially for destruction heavy decks like fire kings or scraps. while i'm not saying the nordic gods would be top tier or anything, they would definetly be far more of a force to be reckoned with, especially if you pair them with mask of restrict, mound of the bound creator, and imperial iron wall.

    Nordics (if you may be able to tell) are my deck. As in, for nearly 2 years I hunted down other Nordic players to defeat them and show my skill. They're, a very unique deck I think. I dropped Loki (HE ISN'T EVEN.AN AESIR KONAMI) and focused on the Beasts. Using some solid tech like Super Nimble Mega Hamster and BLS, Norfics can actually be pretty damn good. You have to run a lot of backrow, and Pot of D at 3. But once you geta real handle on it, they're a damn good deck. Ljosalfar is a great card that can let you hit level 8s pretty easy by the way. I find people focus too much on the Synchros. I always took the strategy that Odin and Thor aren't an absolute necessity to win because you can make level 7s and 8s pretty easy. I'm really passionate about this deck. It can be flexible, powerful and pretty consistant. My rose tinted glasses will forever remind me of the days when I'd drink mead, wear my "Drink mead and praise Odin" t-shirt and destroy all manner of decks on the old DN. Other people may not love Nordics, but for me they were my favourite deck in the game by a long shot.

    It's such a shame the Aesir monsters were nerfed so hard
    In the anime they didnt need to banish tuners to be resurrected, they were resurrected without cost during every standby phase
    Their synchro summons/special summons (ie resurrecting themselves) could also not be negated and they could not be destroyed in the turn they were summoned by any card effect
    Also, their negate effects were quick effects, so yeah, not useful on your opponents turn but holy shit, 10x better than what Konami ended up printing
    Basically, they were also a massive pain in the ass to get rid of (they only had to be in the GY to resurrect, so Kaijus etc. would only be a temporary 1 turn fix as well) and could only be dealt with by enormous beaters or banish-based removal from a specific card type that each individual aesir was not immune to

      Summon Surtr, Doom of the Aesir.
      Reverse nuke/Trish the opponent's hand, field, GY, and cards from the top of their deck equal to the number of Nordic and Aesir monsters banished from your hand, Field, and GY for Surtr's effect.
      Then Surtr searches you Nordic cards from your deck equal to the number of Aesir monsters banished by Surtr's effect.
      Assuming only 1 search, you get Baldur, who would basically have to give you another copy for the Link, spit out another Aesir, and let you use banished Nordics to synchro out as many Aesirs as you can make with your banished Nordic monsters.

    Actually, summoning Loki with Alfars is pretty easy, here is how:
    1) special summon a level 5 monster that specials itself, such as Linkslayer or Cyber Dragon.
    2) Summon Dverg
    3) summon Liosalf
    4) use Liosalf to special summon Svartalf
    5) use the Nordics to summon Loki.

  • @theflyingdropbear2009
    @theflyingdropbear2009 Před 6 lety +1

    I would go with more monsters that help with swarming the field to make summoning the Aesir monster a lot easier, as well as being more versatile in helping with summoning The Aesirs regardless of build, also follow it up with having more synchro options, something the Aesirs seem to lack, by adding more synchro options, they would be opening up more plays for the Nordics/Aesir.
    for example, have a synchro monster that counts as 2 non-tuner materials to assist in the summon of Thor, Loki and/or Odin. as well as having effects that grant more protective abilities if they are used as synchro materials for either Loki, Thor and/or Odin
    Follow this up with a field card that gives the Nordics/Aesirs not only more protection, but also allows the controller to normal summon a second time in the process. A spell card that not only searches, but if you control an Aesir monster, you can place a tuner in the graveyard to allow the controller to banish the tuner of the respective Aesir to summon the Aesir again.
    Meanwhile there could be a trap that allows you to banish the required material from either the deck, field or graveyard to synchro summon an Aesir monster during your opponent's turn, but they must declare an attack, also the synchro summon cannot be negated, another trap card could return all banished Nordic tuner monsters to graveyard to allow for more re-usability of the Aesir monsters in the process, then they could follow it up with a counter trap card that would negate, the activation of a spell/trap/monster effect and destroy it, but you also need to control either an Aesir or Nordic monster to activate it.
    Overall there is potential, but Konami failed to give it the potential that it needed.

    I disagree with having this deck in this series. While the majority of the archetype is worthless, Nordic did get a handful of YCS tops back in 2011 thanks to the goats and horse and the majority of that deck has never been hit. While it is certainly bad by today's standards, it is certainly better than anything else in the series and many decks not included.

      Yeah, I realize that, and this video is frankly more of a product of my slight incompetence with early handling of the channel due to a lack of research, and if it wasn't for the fact that Nordics had far less tops than Worms, I'd have retroactively eliminated them from the series as well.

    The New Spell/Trap searcher is amazing and the more you read it, the more you realize how much Konami tried to make it that amazing.
    Overall, the archetype is playable now in my opinion.

    I'm really disappointed that they didn't have a better Nordic theme. They could have had more Nordic gods, added freaking VIKINGS (like Ragnar Lodbrok and/or non-historical Vikings) and Viking berserkers, and other mythological figures like Sigurd (a human warrior that was a dragon slayer), and Valkyries; including Brunhilde who fell in love with Sigurd. There also isn't a magic card named Valhalla; it would have been perfect for special summoning Vikings from the deck and or graveyard. There are so many real life Nordic sagas that speak of warriors and myths, and that is another reason there was a lot of wasted potential with the Nordic theme. I don't know why Koonami threw away so many opportunities with this theme. They did a good job with the Samurai theme I thought, so maybe they just didn't have as much passion for western mythology and historical warriors (Vikings) since they are Japanese. I also don't like the design of the three Nordic gods that they did add. An example of that is Odin; he is associated with two crows and yet they aren't in his card's design or in any Nordic cards for that matter. What Nordic cards do exist have crappy effects.
    Also, feel free to make corrections to my post. I haven't kept up with Yugioh in a while, so I'm not 100% sure if they added any of the characters to the Nordic deck that I mentioned but I doubt they have since it is a fairly old deck by now.

      Other good candidates would be deities from other mythologies that are huge boss monsters for their archetypes, like a deck based on Greek mythology (Zeus, Hades and Poseidon would be badass).
      Support should be very few and far between, to not make it a common sight.

A Beast version of Vanadis that doesn't require you to jump through a dozen hoops would be a start at least.
