  • One of the most common questions friends have been asking me is why does my garbage disposal leak from the bottom? I have installed garbage disposals 3 times since Thanksgiving alone. Two of our friends had their garbage disposal leaking.

This is such a common occurrence so we decided to help answer your questions of what causes garbage disposal leaks. The only way to root cause leaking garbage disposal is to disassemble your old leaking garbage disposal and forensically determine where the water is coming from, and determine why you have a garbage disposal leaking from the bottom. This unit is an Insinkerator Badger 100, which we replaced with another new Insinkerator Badger 100.
    Sources of garbage disposal leaks
There are numerous places that could spring a leak from the garbage disposal. We've had people report their garbage disposal leaking from reset button, some people report their garbage disposal leaking from base, and some report their garbage disposal leaking from side cracks. Unfortunately, most people think there's a way to repair and start looking for a garbage disposal leaking from bottom fix.
Well usually he leaks are caused by rust inside the unit, so it's not worth it to by a couple of expensive parts, you're better off starting with a new garbage disposal installation, and start your 1-3 year warranty all over again. Sometimes the problem with the lower end bargain garbage disposal model, they tend to corrode after several years of use, and most homeowners don't know how to extend the life of their garbage disposal before it starts to leak.
So anytime someone tells you their garbage disposal leaks from bottom or sides, just tell them put a fork in it, because they need to install a new garbage disposal. The rusty and leaking garbage disposal you see in this video came out of our 85 year old friend's house, after she complained to me that the garbage disposal leaks water out the bottom by the wires.

The cabinet under our sink was filled with water. Tested and found it was coming from the bottom of the Badger disposal. Went to You Tube and found your video. Your explanation and diagnosis convinced me where the problem was. Installed a new disposal the next day using your how to video. Works like a champ. Before I thrrew the old one away i took it apart like you showed. There was a dime sized hole in the bottom plate. Thanks for your excellant videos and easy to follow instructions.

Jeff, great video on how corrosion and degradation of seal material ends up in a leaky disposal. Just had to replace mine and had a bit of trouble locating the very slow leak. Turned out water was getting into the small electrical compartment and leaking through that small metal cover. Also, thanks for the reminder on cold water and letting the disposal run for a bit to get water and waste out.

Does anyone else wonder why parts that were made to make contact with water were not made to be water proof? I don't get it. There's a 100% chance that a disposal will make contact with water and cause rust. I wonder the same thing about hangers and shelves that are made for showers.

Hey Jeff, great breakdown and explanation of what's going on with the leaking badger unit. I especially liked the tips about how long to run it and what temp of water - a LOT of people don't read the instructions!
One thing that would really improve the quality of your video would be to turn off autofocus on your camera. Autofocus works great for casual users taking snaps about town, but when you're trying to unscrew the housing it jumps focus to your arm instead of the action. When you were showing off the hole, a wire sticking up towards the camera stole the show. Use manual focus, check it before you start, and go!

So I uninstalled it And just before replacing it I decided to take apart to see why , so I found the rust Amd had holes all on the base , so I said to myself I can fix this !! Sure did With JB weld , I cleaned of the base with steel brush wheel on a drill , brushed entire rusted base you show on video , and I had bigger holes and same corrosion . Mixed up some jb weld Amd coated smoothly no sanding , I told myself this could work , that was 2 years ago , still working no leaks , you know I’m constantly checking it since it was a Hail Mary , who knows maybe I’ll buy a replacement this year ! Excellent video Jeff showing the inside of the garbage disposer and how they work. Jeff it is worth the money to buy a disposer with a stainless steel crushing plate, 1/2 HP or larger and a hard wired power cord. Galvanized crushing plates will eventually rust and once that happens you will never get rid of the odor. Stainless steel does not attract bacteria which causes the odor. For the same reason it is always better to buy a dishwasher with a stainless steel tub.

Going on 29 years with an ISE 1.25hp all stainless interior garbage disposal. Keep the inside clean. Yes, use hot water once in a while to dissolve grease. I put everything in it including potato peels (lots of cold water!), bones, halved fruit pits, chopped corn silk, and egg shells. Turn it on w/ full water _before_ feeding it and let it run for 1 minutes with water after emptying. That's how to make it last. I wouldn't do bones and pits on an underpowered unit though.

The cheap junk has always been made with either pot metal (zinc alloy) or cast aluminum grinding components. I had such an InSinkErator cheapie in the early 1980s that corroded through within two years of manufacture. I replaced it with a Sears unit that had a stainless steel grinding chamber, stainless steel grinding plate and stainless steel hammers. For all I know, it's probably still working after 35+ years. I replaced the leaking aluminum disposal in my current digs with an all-stainless unit around 1995, and it is still working fine a quarter century later. Even though the stainless steel units cost more, it is worth it for peace of mind and they end up costing much less per year of ownership.

Same thing happened to mine, so, while researching what options I had to replace it, I found out that the smaller 1/3 hp units, are usually made with galvanized steel, and eventually it will rust. If you spend a little more, usually the 1/2 hp and up disposals are made of stainless steel, which will not corrode and last longer. I went with a 1/2 hp to not have to deal with this again.

Excellent instructional video and advice. These garbage disposals are very cheap and can last for 10-15 years. Its easier to just replace it yourself. But if its just a seal that has been breached, then I would use silicone adhesive that is impervious to hot/cold water and mold. You could probably sandblast the rust and caked-on food debris off of the spindle then spray a coating that would rustproof and protect the metal. You could probably add another 5-10 years to its life. Overall, a great DIY video....thank you for this !!

Thank you for this informative video as I learned a lot. I live an a large apartment complex and our garbage disposal started leaking at the bottom tonight. The owners of our complex gave us a do and don't sheet when we moved in and they said absolutely do not put ice cubes in your disposal or banana peels or orange peels? Have no idea why not?

Replaced my 16 year old ISE55 yeasterday. I managed to prolong its life with epoxy casting on the coroded holes for nearly 5 years. I got the stainless steel version now. Hope it would last as expected.

Nice work! That's amazing the epoxy held in there.

Epoxy casting? Do you mean filling in the holes with JB Weld or something similar??

Mine was leaking from a crack on the side of the housing. I bought JB Weld from Walmart for $8 and applied to housing, no more water leak for now.

I recently had a small bone jam my garbage disposal. I got the bone out but now it leaks a little bit from the bottom and when I turn on the disposal, it sprays a lot from the top. What might be the issue?

  • @halecj1
    @halecj1 Před 3 měsíci

This is the exact same model I just had to replace because the bottom was rusted so bad that it looks like a bolt blew through. It had about a 1/2 inch hole.
I replaced it with a Glacier Bay model marketed as "anti-corrosive".

I just replaced an Insinkerator Badger 15ss with the same model. I kept the wiring the same, but my disposal spins counter clockwise. I switched the wires and it still spins counter clockwise. Is this right? I thought I read that they should spin clockwise.
