One historical note. Dwarfs are not an accidental attraction in Wrocław. This is a tribute to the Orange Alternative. The Orange Alternative was a youth anti-communist movement. The symbol of this was the dwarf, and the weapon was humor. The first dwarf was unveiled on the anniversary of the introduction of martial law by the communists (13.12.1981). You can see the videos of Orange Alternative hepenings. 15:58 The entrance is the entrance to Piwnica Świdnicka. Piwnica Świdnicka is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest medieval restaurant in Poland (operating since 1273).

What an absolutely beautiful place! Being native to California, I love the mountains and any kind of water whether it's the ocean, lakes, rivers, etc. I would love to walk down the river in your video and/or eat next to it. This place is just gorgeous! The buildings, including churches are beautiful. They have so much character! What is really nice there is the lack of vehicle traffic. Being able to walk aimlessly without worrying about getting run over is no stress. The only thing I would have to worry about are the gnomes carrying me away as I slept! I started looking up airbnbs in your destinations to see the feasibility of slow traveling. I'm guessing you must be going to Prague next. How fun!

Hello from Wrocław :) It's so nice to hear so many positive things about my city. There's one thing that you got wrong in your video. Wrocław doesn't have the largest town square in Europe. It's Kraków - another Polish city. Have a great stay in Poland :)

It actually depends on what is considered a market square. In Wrocław there is the Salt Square just attached to the market square and it makes a whole of a difference. most of the time you'll hear that the one in Kraków is bigger. Having said that the ones in Wrocław and Kraków are not only the biggest in Europe. They are the two biggest market squares in the world.

The historical coat of arms of Silesia is the coat of arms of the Lower Silesian Piasts ( Polish Dynasty ) - the coat of arms of the Piast dynasty, ruling the principalities of Lower Silesia. It was a shield with a golden field with a black eagle with a silver crescent band running through the eagle's wings and breast, which was crowned with a cross. Wrocław historically belonged to the Czech Republic for about 500 years, to Poland for about 400 years and to Germany for about 200 years.

The wine industry in Poland, according to our tour guide a few years ago, is fairly new and an up and coming.
That hotel looks very much like the one we stayed at when we were there in 2016. We were walking distance from all the stuff downtown. I'd have to look up the name but I'm not sure we have it written down anywhere. The other city we liked a lot is Gdansk. All the cities we visted were great though.

Hi Brian &Carrie~ we really enjoy your videos. As always, with this video, you’ve opened our minds to visiting places we’ve never heard or considered. This city looks like a picture perfect fairy tale city. I look forward to watching your video on the Czech Republic. Ever since we watched the HBO MAX documentary called CZECH IT OUT, we’re sold. It’s a super fun show featuring a father/daughter road trip through their native country and it looks spectacular. (My husband and I are always amazed at the quality of interior design and architecture you see in even the humblest of bakeries and cafes throughout Europe. There’s such detail to beauty that we sorely lack here in the Seattle area. Our minds blown🤯). if you have the capability to view the program, they will show you one beautiful location, including plenty of beer joints and coffee cafes, after another. It’s also very entertaining. Thank you for the inspiration 😊🙌🏻

@@BrianandCarrie Thank you for your kind words, that you like it. Wrocław is the capital of the Dolośląskie Voivodeship. But the real charm of this region lies further south. When you were going to the winery, on the plateau you saw a mountain that looked like a volcano, Mount Ślęza, and in the background on the horizon you could see the Owl Mountains, famous for their secrets from the Second World War. There is a large Książ Castle, which was supposed to be Hitler's headquarters, these mountains have a lot tunnels where the Germans buried a lot of secrets, it is suspected that they were working on antigravity, and in another place there are ruins of buildings where experts stated that they are typical buildings for a nuclear reactor, and even further south, the charming Sudety Mountains typical for tourists with such tourist towns as Karpacz and Szklarska Poreba.😃

Glad to see someone appreciate my favourite Polish city! Krakow may have more history, but there is plenty here for history geeks as well. And Wrocław has a very young soul; I like to say it's a city which keeps re-inventing itself. Culture, art, lifestyle, cuisine... For example, it holds the most prestigious early music festival in Poland.
And a lot of interesting quirks if you keep looking around. Ostrów Tumski (where you started the video), which is now a peninsula but used to be an island with a lot of ancient church-related architecture and institutions, is one of the very few places in the world which has streets lit by old-fashioned gas lamps. And a dude in fancy historical clothes who lits them every evening.

A little story behind the gnomes. In the 80., during one of the harshest Communist times, when underground opposition painted some anti-government slogans on the city walls, the police was immediately sent to paint it over. Then the opposition painted another slogan on it, and the police was sent again to cover it, and then again and again... One day instead of a new slogan someone painted... a gnome. Police was confused, what shall they do with that? Fighting with gnomes seemed to be ridiculous. But soon everyone knew that the gnomes meant resistance. Soon this developed into one of the most original and colorful anti-communist movement in the Eastern Europe - called Orange Alternative (google it!). People demonstrating in gnomes costumes, shouting nonsense slogans and calling it The Revolution of Gnomes. The gnomes all over today's Wroclaw is a visible sign they won 🙂

Actually there is a story behind these gnomes. It all started with the Orange Alternative an anti-communism underground movement when we were a part of Warsaw Pact. They protested in a peaceful way using some humorous elements like little dwarves to show how absurd the whole situation was and to encourage people to not be afraid. For instance they made graffiti with dwarves on the walls where regime tried to cover anti government slogans or leading whimsical marches through the streets of Wrocław advocating for 'dwarves rights'. When we got rid of communism, in 2001 this movement was commemorated with a bronze statue of large dwarf. 4 years later a local sculptor proposed to create many tiny bronze gnomes, each representing a different part of Wrocław's history or daily life and place them around the city.
