  • Every January, English football fans ask themselves the same question: has the magic of the FA Cup died?
Everyone’s got an opinion on just what state the competition’s in and how they’d “fix” it. So ahead of 4th Round weekend, we spoke to fans of teams from up and down the pyramid to find out how they see it.
Can the tournament peacefully coexist with the global powerhouse that is the Premier League and how much room is there for good old fashioned Cup runs in an era of post-season tours?

Probably the best idea mentioned in or below the video. This also takes away the value of a replay for the smaller clubs that make it there, so scraping them becomes a real option, which gives, I think, the lesser clubs a bigger chance of progressing.

FA cup squads (18 players) need to be declared at the start of the competition, after which you can't bring in any other players. If teams don't want to play their first team then they can't bring them in in later rounds. If they want to win it they'll have to commit to it. And get rid of the Wembley semis. How to fix cup competitions in England:
Clubs that qualified for European competitions should not be eligible for the League Cup unless they won it the previous season. Treat it as an alternative to European competitions. This will lessen the fixture congestion that larger clubs complain about.
The reward for winning the FA Cup should be qualification to the Champions League. It would give the big clubs an incentive to treat the competition seriously.

Do what the FA Vase & FA Trophy do and make replays optional. In those competitions, if both teams agree beforehand, a replay can be scrapped in favour of extra time & penalties. Would mean that for teams that play in Europe they can get rid of potential unnecessary fixtures whilst allowing the smaller teams who benefit from replays to still have them.

I think the League Cup is the one that needs reform. I think Premier League sides should mainly have to take under 23s and should have a cap of 4 over 23s that they can have in their squad for a match. This would give lower league clubs the chance to knock the Premier League sides out and would allow the Premier League sides to rest senior players and show off what their youth players can do.

There is one simple effective change that can transform the FA Cup, have the winners qualify for the Champions League group stage. That means winning it becomes a lucrative incentive.
So you have 1st 2nd in the Premier League also qualify for the group stage, then 3rd has to go through the playoffs. If the winner of the Champions League has already finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd, then have 4th now take the Champions League play off spot.

I think the FA Cup isn’t dead but it’s almost going:
    How to save it?
    1) Positive Press and fan base needs change the negative attitude
    2) Keep replays as it saves clubs
    3) Semi-finals not a Wembley
    4) Stick to the 1st Saturday (90% of matches need to be then)
    5) And this one is for every cup- no advertising in its name so just call it The FA Cup
    6) Keep the league cup but give it similar status as the FA Cup as it’s a cup with prestige too
    7) Being PL teams in the second round so that they’re in sooner but not too soon that is lower clubs take it for granted
    8) Enable youngsters to play- it doesn’t degrade the cup it inspires young players to make history and think ‘maybe a 18 year old lad from a lower league team score the winner in extra time...’
The FA Cup is still magical - look at the clips of my club Shrewsbury playing Liverpool at the Greenhouse Meadows tonight. It had everything! And guess what we came back from 2-0 down to get a draw and a replay at Anfield. To have the European and world club cup winners at Shrewsbury tonight was a dream. Even Jurgen couldn’t believe he’s drawn against a time 56 places below him! That’s why the cup is magical- it keeps teams going and no matter how bad the league run might be- the cup run can change the whole mood of a club.

English football as a whole needs a revamp. Fixture congestion is a problem and this is one of the main reasons why bigger teams field weaker sides in the FA cup, particularly the early stages. Would be solved by getting rid of the league cup and also FA cup replays. Even though replays create a lot of money for smaller teams, a penalty shootout after a draw would give them pretty much a 50% chance of progressing, instead if going to Old Trafford/Anfield/ Stamford bridge and getting hammered. League cup also isn't taken seriously enough to merit its continued existence. All the other top 5 leagues have scrapped their league cups now This would Also allow for a proper premier league winter break and give players more of a time to rest.

First people have to decide if they want the Premier league teams in or not. If you want them in then you have to make it worth their while. That means:
    1. Dump the league cup
    2. Starting in the 3rd round seed every team based on their current league position and do a draw for home/away
    3. Dump the replays. 90 minutes then Pens. Not sure why it's somehow the prem clubs responsibility to financially support football clubs in league two.

4: Premier League teams play away in the early rounds.

7: Don't have games in the winter break.
    8: Improve ticket prices.
9: Increase the number of low level teams in the qualifying rounds. From level 11 onwards.
10: Increase the prize money for winning the FA Cup
11: If possible have the winners of the FA Cup will qualify for the Champions League.

Over the weekend, I saw my team South Shields get to the first round for the first time in nearly half a century, we celebrated it like we had won the whole thing.

Make the lower league clubs get the home fixture against the teams from the premier league and championship. Allows the home club to get a full attendance, make heaps of money through the canteen, create lifelong memories for the fans that would never get the chance to see the bigger clubs in the flesh on the regular occasion. It will also bring money and create a buzz to the city. If it is a draw then have a replay which gives the players the added reward of getting to play football in a premier league/championship stadium so they get those additional memories as well and the club gets even more revenue from the fixture.

You want to fix the Fa cup. Few suggestions
    - have a bracket of the 72 teams in pyramid. Rank on league position and no1 plays no 72 and so on
    - the weaker team always play at home, no replay.
The fun about the fa cup is a big team coming to non league team. This also brings revenue for smaller teams.
Something similar is done in France, during the early rounds. So big teams have to take it serious or they will get knocked out.

Get rid of both the League Cup and Checkatrade trophy, and replace it with a tournament just for teams Championship and below.
Also offer a Champions League qualifying place for the FA Cup winners. Replace 4th place in the EPL with it; but if you're Top 3 and win the cup, then have a play-off between the losing finalists and 4th place for the Champions League place.
If you think about it, the FA Cup winners figuratively are more 'Champions' than 4th place in a league anyway...

    1. The Semi-final to be played on Neutral pitches
    2. More tickets to be to the clubs and their supporters - when they reach the semi-finals
    3. Replies to be played. No Penalty shootout
4.The fInal its self - more tickets to be given to the fans of both clubs - not celebrities
    5. The final to be played at 3pm on the Last Day of the UK season
    6. Offer a bigger incentive to reach the Semi-Final and Final of the competition

I think English FA Cup should do the same as German Cup; draw all clubs eligible for FA Cup from the first round proper, and do away with League Cup.
To accommodate all 736 clubs in FA Cup with all EPL clubs play from the first round like German Cup, it should be expanded to 9 rounds proper where 512 clubs play from the first round. All clubs will be drawn in open basis with no seedings involved; therefore possibility for any Premier League club to meet another Premier League club from first round is real.
All Football League and Conference National/North/South will automatically play in the first round, the rest will have to play qualifying rounds to get to the first round proper.
In case of draw, no replay will be played. Instead the game will be played into extra time and penalties when needed.

1: All fixtures in each round should take place at 15.00 on a Saturday, save for when two clubs aren't allowed to play at the same time.
2: The Final should take place at 15.00 on a Saturday in May, a week after the normal domestic season has ended.
3: Give the fixture a big build up. Coverage should start from 11.30 on the day.
4: Introduce a competition that Cup winners throughout Europe would take part in the following season. A Cup for the winners of Cups.
5: Make the above competition even more attractive by limiting Champions' League places to those clubs who were champions of their own country (and introduce a third-tier European competition for clubs finishing highly in their leagues).
6: The Semi-Finals shouldn't be staged at Wembley, but at neutral venues instead.
7: Replays should be reintroduced for drawn Sixth-Round fixtures.
8: The Fifth-Round fixtures should be moved back to a Saturday, and replays should be reintroduced for drawn matches.
9: Scrap the televised draws for the next round and have them on radio only on a Monday lunchtime.
10: Finally, to really restore this match to the showpiece of the English season, all live televised coverage of domestic football in this country - except this match - should be stopped.
