  • While I was in France, I took a little weekend away from Paris to visit a friend in Lille.
Most Americans I know had never heard of this historic city on the border of Belgium. Since it's only just over an hour's train ride from Paris, everyone wanted to know if it would be a good day trip to plan while taking their vacations in Paris.
Keep watching to find out if Lille should be part of your next French adventure!

If you are visiting from London, England, Lille is on the Eurostar train route and about 75 minutes from London St Pancras. The train station is on the outskirts of the city by a large shopping mall. From Paris, it's on the TGV high-speed train network and there are good rail connections from many other places in France and Belgium. At Christmas there is a large market with giant ferris wheel and tree (and funfair) in the main square; it's very pretty. The zoo is usually closed throughout winter. For your American viewers it may be worth pointing out that shops are generally closed on Sundays, so make Sunday a museum day. If you visit the (Musee) Palais des Beaux Arts, be sure to go to the basement and see the 3D maps of various cities including Lille

Hello ladies and gentlemen, SciencePo Lille is one of my Erasmus options. What I wonder is whether Lille is safe enough to wander around without any hesitation?

That’s so exciting! Lille is such a beautiful place to be.
I wandered around solo most of the time and felt very safe.
I also have a friend who went to school there for two years and said she felt pretty safe the entire time, even at night solo. Obviously like with any city, you just need to use common sense, especially at night.

I just want to say this about the front of Notre Dame de la Treille at 0:56. I've lived in Lille for decades and have known the city forever... The façade does look underwhelming but it has a feature that you might have known with a little more research 🙂😉. It is made of a special kind of translucid marble, ie it allows light to come through it. So inside the cathedral when the sun shines through it's quite beautiful. And outside the façade at night when the cathedral is lit up inside, the light from inside shines outward and makes the whole front of the cathedral glow, and it's quite pretty too. So... never jump to conclusions or judge a book by its cover. 😊 I'll watch the rest of the video now. Thank you. 🙂

Oh that’s great to know! Thanks for passing the knowledge along. I was mostly going on my what my local friend was telling me. I assumed because she lived there for three years she would knew what she was talking about with points of interest. 😊

@@allytravels You're welcome, and I understand, to be honest I myself didn't learn about this until quite late. 😁 This cathedral is very unlike the ones you usually find in France. When they rebuilt it they went for this marble wall which doesn't look like much, but I like the fact that those who have "the knowledge" see something about it that others cannot see. Maybe it was meant to be a metaphor for religion or something. I'm probably overthinking it. 😄 But anyway at least this marble makes the cathedral quite unique in its own way.

I love that metaphor! Let’s agree that’s the deeper meaning of the design 😊
