How to fix leaking full aquarium (Super Glue & Baking Soda vs Silicone) - 45g TANK LEAKED!! đŸ˜±

  • Yes, it happened. The old 45g finally sprung a leak at the seam and started leaking. In the midst of freaking out, Eat Sleep Reef came to the rescue with a creative solution of using Super Glue and Baking Soda! IDEALLY, I would use silicon to reseal the entire tank, but that would mean draining the entire tank for 24 hours. Since the 150g tank is underway, I have slapped on this figurative and then a literal band-aid so this tank could remain in operation for a few more months before I migrate everything over! This should not be a permanent solution, re-sealing the entire tank with silicone is still the best way, but this would buy some time!

I was EXTREMELY lucky I was able to patch the tank! This is meant as a bandaid and not a full repair like new silicone, but this will hopefully hold the tank over until I was able to transfer all livestock to the 150g tank. Thank you everyone for the mental supports and technical suggestions! I need to give a special shout out to EatSleepReef for the MacGyver fix! This really works I have a 160 gallon reef tank headed to the wall I couldn't get to the outside corner. I repaired it from the inside. I drained it past the week silicone it was still leaking. Saw this video and one other about using baking soda and liquid Super Glue. I like this one the best because he shows how he put the baking soda on. I wouldn't recommend using any type of CA or epoxy directly on Glass. The temperature related expansion is too different from that of the native glass, but it holds strongly enough to cause stress in the glass. Ive seen catastrophic failures in tanks due to expansion cracking. Sioicone sticks to the glass well, but stays flexible enough to not cause stress fracturing of the glass.

Did you keep the lighting on after you partially drained the 40 gal? the SPS RTN may have been caused by over exposure to light. The water greatly reduces the par. Those sps were probably getting fried by the light while they were exposed to air.

I’m hoping this works for a long time because I just re sealed my aquarium. It was a regular 10 gallon that I took apart and re sealed into a rimless tank
I just didn’t seal it too great on one corner mid way down the tank and it’s leaking 😓
I really don’t want to do this all over again

@@danielleschayer3157 sorta. I did this first and added another seal over. I forgot what it was called. It was like a putty/clay type of sealant

    "9-10" years???
.I should probably double check my 29 gallon and my 10 gallon. My 29 gallon is the only one from the two that is currently in use, but it is about 12ish years old and in constant use since I got it. My 10 gallon is probably 15, maybe 16 years old. However it is just sitting on one of my shelves in my closet right now, but I had been considering taking it out and setting it up as another nano reef...so I should probably look at both of them.
