  • After-movie commercial and closing, then the sign-off clip starts falsely only to be stopped and rolled back for one more round of commercials! Always wonder how these slots were sold to advertisers. They had stopped doing the sign-off news reports by this point, announcer Len Beardsley says goodnight and listen to KABC-AM if you're still up, then a High Flight film and Moog Star-Spangled Banner before the signal goes off.

    Music on the movie bumpers is "Laia Ladaia," from the 1968 Pat Williams album _Shades of Today_ . Seems that one got around in television circles -- at least two game show pilots and three aired programs used music from this release!

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 Před 8 měsíci

      "Laia Ladaia" itself also appeared as the opening music for WJW/WJKW-TV Cleveland's "Late Night Movie" (the type whose open was enough to give some sensitive people seizures).

      @@londonmay1That had been a promo for the KABC-TV morning one-hour 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. program called "A.M. Los Angeles", which aired from 1971 to 1991. Notice in this December 30, 1978 promo that mentioned hairstyles for men for 1979, that the host was Regis Philbin speaking those words. That was before his 1985 switch over to WABC-TV in New York City, when he was joined by Kathie Lee Gifford. Regis Philbin hosted "A.M. Los Angeles" with Sarah Purcell, before she was one of the hosts on the national NBC-TV show, "Real People", from 1979 to 1984 and the ABC "Home Show" from 1992 through 1994. In between, she had the nationally syndicated show,"Publuc People, Private Lives".
      As far as the "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Fampus" theme, that show did not air until 1984 and went through 1995. It was a weekly nationally syndicated show hosted by Robin Leach.
      The theme song was first used, however, on "A.M. Los Angeles", beginning in 1978. The title is "Come As You Are" and it is an instrumental by Bill Conti. "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous" used it as their beginning and end theme from 1984 to 1988, then from 1988 through 1995, for the opening theme only, as their ending theme was replaced with "Champagne Wishes And Caviar Dreams", co-written and sung by Dionne Warwick.
      "A.M. Los Angeles" used the theme from 1978 through at least 1983, then "Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous" used it from 1984 through 1995 in some form or another. I had first known it as the "A.M. Los Angeles" theme song first, as many in the Los Angeles region had, as it was used on their local show.
      KABC-TV Channel 7 Los Angeles continued to sign off at night through the late 1980s.

    Though I’ve upgraded my TV a lot over the years, I miss the days of the CRT. I was born in 84 and my family bought a Sony 25” trinitron soon after and it ran for almost 20 years without issue, and in between we bought a large screen 32” Sony Trinitron in 95. The latter was still being used by my Grandma until 2010. 4K and full HD is still great though, but old stuff looks better on CRT.

    KABC's sign-offs might make modern audiences think of the _Bluey_ episode "Sleepytime", which uses a similar arrangement of the Holst piece "The Planets, Op. 32: IV. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity".

    Contrast this with, say, New York sister WABC-TV, which after the movie was over would have one or two ads followed by a PSA, then the sign-off slides-only "Eyewitness News" (with PSA breaks), more PSA's, the morning prayer read by staff announcers, the sign-off and - at this point in time - the same Moog SSB KABC signed off with. Moreover, WABC rotated late-night shift announcers by day of the week and all that, including Wally Parker, Tedd Lawrence, Bob Lloyd, Allan Jefferys, sometimes Ed Williams or Barbara Korsen . . . until about 1977, Ed Jordan also handled the sign-off shift . . .

      Meanwhile, in New York, WABC's morning show was still "A.M. New York" then, with Clay Cole as main host (the show ended up in a death spiral after Stanley Siegel - one of those comets that shone brightly and burnt out quickly - left to host his own show on rival WCBS). I don't know if Janet Langhart was with Mr. Cole yet, or what.

    10 days before this sign off, in England their BBC Television was taken off air totally by a strike of the unions. No television at all on BBC One or BBC Two from December 21st until December 23rd, when the unions agreed a pay increase. TV resumed on the BBC on December 23rd. Nearly ruining Christmas for millions.

    @The Media Hoarder: It has long been believed that Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald had an off-screen love affair. Not only that, rumors circulated for years that the two hated each other, yet nothing could be further from the truth. In 1994, a book about their relationship titled Sweethearts hit bookstores. The 20th anniversary edition, released in 2014, included startling new information and uncensored quotes of Nelson Eddy's sensual writings and comments about he and MacDonald's relationship off screen. Among the revelations in the new book... details of Nelson Eddy's spy work during World War II, the sex, name and burial location of Jeanette MacDonald's premature child with Eddy in 1938, her futile other attempts to have another child, why MacDonald once tried to shove soprano Rise Stevens' head in the toilet, MGM studio boss Louis B. Mayer's hatred toward Eddy, and MacDonald's admittance of an early heart attack at 26 years old.
