This instructional video covers a technique I call a "Punch" In 1997 I set the World Record for bunnyhopping a mountain bike, in this tutorial I show you a more useful technique for getting up and over obstacles on my bicycle. Check it out and let me know what other skills you would like to learn.

Interesting. I have been doing this for decades. Never had a name for it, but I always thought of it as a lazy bunnyhop because I would always let my front tire land first so I could use it to help leverage the back wheel up by push forward with my arms.
Pretty cool and definitely comes from trials where your goal is to get over an obstacle instead of completely clear it like I did riding BMX for so many years.
I've heard it called a jack rabbit. We mostly only have logs to get over out here, so punching up something long enough for the wheelbase isn't something we get to practice often. I can't bunnyhop for poop, but I can get over a 2ft log!
Even bunnyhops blow my brains.. how the heck is that back wheel coming up? And now u climbing up that rock like u have an engine in your frame or something. I love it! I'm still blown away by it!
The back wheel comes up from a combination of pushing the bars away with your arms and and scooping back and up with your feet.
Jeff Lenosky thank you, Sir!
I just pulled my legs together when standing and habing my pedals looking fowards, and then i got my rear wheel up
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss Are you clipped when doing this? I am almost there but the bike doesn't follow me 100% on the up travel. It makes me think you are not on platforms...can't really tell. Awesome video...thanks
Dave. In that video I’m clipped in but I have a video on my page. Check it out!
i think in trails riding, they call it a "touch up", an extreme version of it is a "hook up". I love your show, Jeff, i watched you video like 15 years ago, thought you quit, good to know you are still in. Respect.
Thank you so much. You're totally right on the trials heritage!
Mr Lenosky - the legend. I got into biking 20 years ago because of your early mtb videos :) much respect
klonhead that's awesome to hear! Thank you!!
This guy's got skills! Watched a few videos and I'm hooked! Slower, rockier, tight, and techy terrain is what I ride, and I thought I was the only one. Finally a channel I can relate to. Subscribed!!!
When I learned to manual, it broke my bunnyhop. I can only hop out of a manual now. I had no idea it's called a punch, and that it's what I evolved into doing naturally.
Great Vid Jeff!!
well... i mean technically i guess you always bunny hop out of manuals... now that you found that balance point you should be able to bunny hop as high as possible because you found that balance point where you cant get the front end any higher up. I ride bmx aswell and when you do things such as 540s on banks it requires alot of height and im to weak to naturally pull it up so i put my body into the manual position to get the front end up.
I used to watch you in the NWD movies i think back when i rode as a young man. Good to see you still healthy and riding.
Excellent! This is exactly what I needed. Thanks :-) I was wondering if you could get on a table with this move and you answered that question. Time to start practicing!
I watched your cannel and i am a kid you were at my school
this is AWESOME!... I swear I see trials riders doing this ALL THE TIME!.... now I know what it's called!
It's also called a front touch, zap tap and others... I like Punch because it sounds cool!
Bad ass.
Been doing this for a long time without really knowing it had a name.
Not going nearly as big tho.
Just keep practicing and going a little higher each time.
Pretty neat. This is exactly what you do on enduro motorcycles to get over obstacles.
Thank you for sharing this, Jeff! I'm having lots of trouble getting my bunny hops anywhere close to where I'd like to be, and this looks like something that I can definitely benefit from.
Yeah this, to me, seems easier than a bunnyhop and a good way to learn a bunnyhop
Awesome video, keep 'em coming sir!
Thing about bunny hop is that is consumes 'a ton' of energy to perform repeatedly. Regardless, having different techniques at one's disposal is a good way from keeping the feet on the pedals and not hiking. Cheers!
Jeff! I've watched your segment in NWD2 HUNDREDS of times in my teenage years. I'm so happy to see you finally on CZcams. Glad to see you're still ripping it!
I kept putting my front tire over the obstacles instead of into it with the bottom quarter of the tire. Game changer, I hope. Lubing the chain and I am excited to try this tomorrow.
This is great! The Austin trails have a lot of big step-ups in series, so this is way more useful than a bunny hop.
I'm voting you should do more trials skills how-tos!
Have you seen my Emma Long Trail Boss episode?? I loved that place!
Yup! Loved seeing a bigger channel show that Austin has some great trails here.
You have some mad skills my friend.
Thanks!
Very good tutorial Jeff! Great to have somebody like you sharing their knowledge.
Christian Pesch thanks Chris. It's my first real self filmed tutorial. Let me know if there's something I can improve for future edits.
Hey man I'm a roadie converting to mountain biking your videos are very instructive. I like the way you break it down and teach.
Thanks a ton for this video, Jeff!
I "learned" the zap tap almost ten years, ago, but I never knew about ramming the 1/4 lower of the front tire into the obstacle. That's the clincher I need to progress from getting up things I can get my front tire over to getting up things higher than that.
Had to come back and look at this again i rode moto trials years ago and we called it boosting an obsticle its a great technique use it everwere espesially when getting tyred great break down jeff .
Something I almost never see talked about is incorporating technical riding into a longer cross country ride. For efficiency I like to ride with a proper seat height to maximize power for pedaling but often forget (or don't have) a way to drop my seat and wind up trying to get up or over stuff without changing that. Most places I ride (I'm in NJ) like Allaire SP, Hartshorne, Chimney Rock, etc have few places that really require big moves but when I travel and ride places in NC I feel like a fish out of water with all the large rocks. I just found your channel, going to watch some more videos but a video discussing these kinds of moves on a smaller scale for XC or recreational riders would be cool.
I know you are sick of hearing this, but great work on this lesson. Much appreciated.
'DAAAM!!!!! WOW!!! I KEPT WATCHING SOME TUTORIALS IN CZcams. BUT, WHEN WATCHED YOUR VIDEO THERE SOMETHING FORCE FOR ME TO DO IT. I SO AMAZED WHEN I SEE YOUR VIDEO...YOU ARE SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank dude! i will practice that today in my backyard, im in quarentine i need stuff like you show to keep me in a good move to the next season. Keep up your good work dude.
I've gone over large log and rock obstacles using this method for years, and never heard a name for it. Two things though: 1) I can't bunny hop worth a darn and 2) I do this clipped in and have never done well with platform pedals. Which makes taking dabs a little bit harder, but also makes pulling the back end up a lot easier. Great video!
I think I just started doing this because I don’t bunny hop well and I’ve been trying to preserve my bike....lol....but watching this really shows that the technique allows you to conquer huge obstacles.....I grew up going over stone walls in New England and XC riding.....totally enjoy what vids Ives seen so far....down here in Georgia with some incredible riding opps now 🤙
Thanks man
Great video...I find this move more useful on trails than bunny hopping, and it's key to cleaning technical climbs. That said, you could say this is a two-part bunny hop for use at lower speeds. If you do this at high speeds...that's pretty much a bunny hop. Still, I think punching is more useful and common skill day to day.
Well done man. Keep the how to videos coming por favor!
Thanks!
Honda 2000 I
funny. I have been doing this move because it was easier than bunny hops and seemed to work better for trail obstacles. Nice to see it has a name.
A really excellent explanation and breakdown.
Note that the basic idea is to convert forward motion into upward motion by slamming the bottom half of the wheel into the object. Ideally you want to hit both wheels to get maximum lift with the least effort. Just hitting the rear is very efficient for small obstacles and is called a "bump jump".
I used to do this all the time when I rode trials and there’s been more than a few times I’ve miss calculated and hit too low and nearly headplanted on whatever I’m trying to hop, but I’ve been using this technique again just recently, but I’ve forgotten about the pedal stroke into it, going to have to practice more!
My hero has a CZcams channel?!? I'm pumped I stumbled upon this vid! Well explained by the way Jeff. Thank you!
Nice one coach jeff..you nailed trials skill without using clipless pedals.. relying on clipless to achieve any kind of hop is like cheating.. lol
Thanks Juluis!!
Amazing video thanks for sharing!
Thanks for checking it out!
Heeey Jeff, wow dude such a great breakdown and description of this move! I really love following your techniques for things and I have to say...I am feeling some love for the trials stuff!!!
Thanks Jeff.
Pete
thanks for checking out the video Pete!
Excellent how to, I'm off to try it.
Subscribe to your CZcams channel? You got that RIGHT!!!!
Great skills bro!
I've struggled with the bunny hop but have been doing this as a "cheat" and feeling bad about it. Now I feel good about it and that is because I know there is a path forward for me. I need to do the punch forward at the end and then I'll stop getting stuck on the top which caused me to do a foot plant to get unstuck. I'll start punching harder now. Thanks.
Jeff! I remember your bike films sections where you did some serious street/trial combos. Danny MacAskill was probably learning how to write that time. Nice to see you on CZcams
I could watch you for hours. This is neat!
Thanks Jen!
Oh my god!!! This is a thing?!?! I've been doing this forever since I started learning tricks. I actually used to do this before I learned how to master bunny hops, I STILL do this because it's fun and easy. But man... 😯 I didn't know I wasn't the only one. I actually came up with it on my own, I'd never seen anyone else do it.
Yeeeaaahh buddy
Subscribed for your ridiculous skill and agility climbing that rock at the end. Looking forward to binging your channel.
I was doing this whenever I didn't lift my front wheel high enough to jump on something.
Punch is an essential trials skill, and it's quite handy 😁😁
This will come in very handy. Now I don't have to go around all those picnic tables on 5he local trails.
CounterFleche lol. True. They seem to be everywhere
In its simplest form, explained well.
4:22 I need that beautiful jump up bro.
thanks for the info.
This has helped immensely wit the LARGE log crossing.
Matt Horner that’s awesome and great to hear
Appreciate the instructional vid! I'm gonna have to spend some time on skills practice. I typically would rather just get on the trail!
That's why grown ups learn slower than kids, they go out and play and learn by just messing around and having fun. We're usually too concerned with riding, distances, heart rates etc.... take some time to play around every now and again and your skills will improve dramatically
Excellent .... it's gonna take me some time to figure this one...
Great lesson! This will come in handy with all of the rocky New England terrain I'm in. Thanks Jeff!
Sound of the freehub in slo-mo reminds me of the sound effects in The Six Million Dollar Man. That seems appropriate. :-) Now to go give this a shot.... Thanks Jeff!
Solid info Jeff!
Bring Jeff to help out building your trails 🤠
Thanks man. I’ve been sort of doing this as something I discovered on my own simply because on my local trails there are a lot of times I just don’t have the speed to bunny hop something. So I started doing what I call a rolling bunny hop without the hop part. I didn’t realize it was thing. I’m lucky though to get up to picnic table bench height- you make getting onto the top of that picnic table look easy. And Im sure yours is a lot smoother looking than mine. Lol. Love your vids. 🤘🤙
Thank you and thanks for checking out the vids!
Nice trial skills!
I also practice a some basic trial skills on my MTB to get better control under low speed.
Love it. It rains but this is the must skills
I've been subconsciously doing this for years. Video is already helping with technique though. Thanks!
Thanks, that's great to hear!
this is amazing lesson Jeff , awesome
This is basically a bunny hop split in two then using your obstacle as a liked or temp to set the clearance
I never thought of that but you are right!
It is great. I am from Germany, so sorry for my mistakes. Looks very good for me also using it uphill. What I am currently looking for is a bunny hop over a chain uphill. If you got any idea let me know. Sometimes in the forrest is a chain on the way, that you could not drive around. It is around 7-15% rise. If you need a video for the situation I would make one for you and post it here. I am interesting in your thoughts. Looking to your answer.
Super useful for techy climbs!
At 6’ 5” I’m just amazed. Not sure why I would think that would inhibit. Just amazed.
Thanks Chad!
Do use the bump method at high speed and if so could you demonstrate. Thanks jeremy
That is the ball field at mahlon Dickerson. Im pretty sure I've fallen off that rock before haha.
Guineson yup!
Dude! Nice one, Will practice this and hope to not suck,
No need to bunny hop but 1 of the three essential skills to do the maneuver is to Bunny Hop! Jeff you got me confused here. LoL
Hey John, bunnyhopping is an essential skill, this is just more useful in my opinion, but definitly not in every case. The reason I say that about the bunnyhop is because I think it helps you understand the "feel" more and who you need to move your body. Make sense?
Very cool. Thanks sir.
"Why you may never need to bunnyhop your bike again"
- The man with the highest bunny hop.
It really makes you think....
lol, see what I did there?
Great riding. I am going to do that I wish
I am such a roadie. I look at this and think 1) I'll never be able to do this and 2) even if i could i'm afraid what it would do to my bicycles! :) ...with that said, this is a great description and I was motivated for about 7 seconds, which is impressive.
DFTA (Don't Feed The Animals) lol. Thanks! Just start small. You’ll be surprised how quickly you progress.
Thank you for the encouragement. The one thing as a commuter I feel I should be able to do is hop curbs for emergency maneuvers. Seems simple enough. :) ...really what stops me is I don't like banging up my bicycles. Plus, I often carry up to 40 lbs in my rear rack, so that adds to the challenge! ...but I've tried stuff without the weight too. Btw, in case you are interested, this is my perspective in helping to change the world: czcams.com/play/PLFOOfdNQa2ztXPVRuIUWE3gPntkTMBSWs.html
...in the meantime, I just subscribed to your channel to help the cause! :)
DFTA (Don't Feed The Animals) thank you!
How does the #goat only have 46.9K subs? Come on people, he's dishing out great content!!!
I have a hype man!! Stoked you like the content. Spread the word!
I got you! Keep up the great work and stay safe Jeff!
Nice gt staystrong , ive got the 24" bmx cruiser
love this video, thank you.
Knarlllleeeeee, cool how to video, all I need now is to go tryyyyyy it out.
Doug Bowers let me know how it goes!
I learnt how to do this over storm drains and such before I mastered the bunnyhop, except I'd make sure my front wheel cleared the obstacle before kicking the back wheel up and over as the force would shock my arms too much
That's awesome Jeff! Great video... Subbed !
I've been doing this for 20 years where have you been!
This Look like a slow bunny hop to me
sergio morales pretty much except bumping the front wheel
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss It seems like the arms are different too. For bunny hops at least I keep my arms straight through out. On the punch, you get to use the t-rex because you want to get the weight on front tire before punching. Am I right?
I am a trail boss too. When the trail goes left 90 degrees I just cut off the corner. It’s faster, easier and will blow your friends minds. Totally new technique while I never thought of it before and therefor it’s new. I am gonna make a yt vid on it and call it: “why you may never have to do hard cornering again”
Hell I love this technique.
Jordan Yang thanks!!!
nice vid Jeff , i was expecting more along the lines of your how to wheelie video, pleasantly suprised it was actually a tutorial !! kudos
cant deny the skill level, that was a well executed move... but. Good luck getting over a log using that move without smashing your chain ring or down tube. Also that last one basically was a bunny hop without the wheels leaving the ground, very apparent in the slo motion
Julius Steezer that's actually the ONLY way I go over any log taller than a foot. Check out MTBR.com I did a how to if this move on there doing it over logs. I also have a bunch of pictures on my Instagram and an old video over a highway divider. That's 30 inches and cement!
i'll have a peak
From that second angle it looks like your chainring is about to hit that rock, almost gave me a heart attack...
Great video and tutorial!
It gets pretty close!! But I have cat like reflexes ;-)
Cool, I have done it for ages, I did not know it had a name. I saw it as a slow wheelie hop
Glad you like it!
Right. I can do this all day with clipless...but on flats, holy crap so much harder.
Goat Rides Bikes check out the “clips vs flats” video on my channel. You might find some tips useful.
Jeff, one thing you never comment on is if you ever use your brakes to let you re-center on the really big punches. At the 6:17 mark of the video you are going up a pretty big rock, and it looks like you might brake, and pull yourself back to center. Thoughts?
every time I'm trying to get that back wheel up I fly off the pedals
Same. I can't seem to figure it out 😞
You guys will get it. I promise. You'll feel it, just like jumping in your church shoes. You go up, they stay on. Then you can teach me how to punt without losing said shoe..... lol. Blessings to you!
@@namelastfirstname4124 heehee, thanks! We'll get there for sure! :D
I use the Same technique.
When you pulled your handle bars up and towards your body (lifting the front wheel, aka the first step of a bunnyhop), you have to push your handle bars forward, horizontally away from your body. At the same time you have to bend your feet forward (It can be seen in this video at 1:30), this allows you to pull your pedals up because the pins of the pedals are almost at a 90° angle to the pulling-direction of your feet. Do both of that at the same time. It allows you to spin the bike around its weight-point (idk how to say it)
Excellent, thanks a lot!! 🤙
this is what you do always on a dirt bike. nothing new. but a godd explanation anyway
Very impressive
with the bike skills you have you should have 100k subs
great video
Good explanation. Heh, though I was doing these 25+ yrs ago on my BMX without having a name for it. :¬)
Beautiful... i think i could try this.
Thanks 👍
Behold the master! This is what my weapons cache was missing. I always wondered how to bunny hop into my tailgate...now I know! Thanks Jeff I will be subscribing now. By the way, did you film this in NC by any chance. The location seemed familiar to me.
Hey Joel, I filmed it in NJ, but my next Trail Boss will be from Pisgah!!
Check out the Kitsuma trail near Old Fort. It is an epic three mile descent.
I've been doing this a lot, thinking it was just a lazier way to get over things than a bunny hop. Now I don't feel so bad about it. 😂
You made it look so easy!
Super Nice Video
