This week I use the ramp I built in episode one:
• BUILDING A WOODEN GAP ...
And jumped with my friends in episode two:
• How far is too far? Mo...
To teach you the mechanics of jumping your bike HIGH or staying LOW and why you want to understand how to do both!
Building wooden kicker ramps and landings is an awesome SCALABLE way to practice your jump skills. By trying different distances and different speeds you can learn all the nuance and input your body will have on the bike while jumping different distances.
The take off is 38 inches high with an 11.5 foot transition and 48 inches wide
The landing is 42 inches tall. the downslope is 10 feet long and the case pad is 2 feet. The overall width is 8 feet.
I used 8 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood to cut all the sides and landing ramp surfaces and 2 sheets of 1/2 plywood doubled up for the ramp take off surface. The total number of 2x4s was approx 20 - Zábava
Never seen anyone break it down like that Jeff is a true professional with experience to back it up. Thank you for the footage Jeff👍👏💪
cellphonenut thank you!! Glad you liked it.
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss Jeff, do you have plans for building that ramp? I need to know the dimensions as i like to build one for our trails and that is the perfect size
@@josephbwuzhere Sorry I never say this. The plans are in the previous video!
This video had a great hook.
Trail Features I see what you did there
Yep, his channel has really taken off!
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss here's another one. Not only a great hook, but a perfectly DIY hook! :)
I've never seen a jump video break it down in this way. I learned more from this than all the others.
Great video, thanks!

Jeff, great teaching video !! 👍
Great breakdown... it all just made sense! Time for some session and progression..!
Sooooo much more informative than the stomp session videos which you have to pay to watch
Thanks so much Jeff, I don't know what that is but I appreciate it. If you like it help me out and spread the word!
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss definitely.. stomp is a page that has pro slope style and downhill riders doing videos.. very little technical information.. compared to what you give in this video.. I was watching one of theirs a few weeks ago and just felt confused
@@jeffkirk6202 Great, glad I could help
One of the best jumping how-to video I have seen so far. Thumbs up!
This video goes in details 👌🏽 I'm ready for any jumps. Thanks trail boss

Brilliant explanation. Thank you! I wish I was one of those kids training with you
Great vlog jeff👍
The phsyology of jumping,by the professor.Simply brilliant man!
The key is “those micro calculations in your head” 😮
Great job
Great video! Very informational and helpful!
Thanks Connor
your video has way more information than any youtube jump video I have come across and it helps.
By far the best out there.
Thank so much!!
thanks for sharing your tips on low&high jumps. we know its really hard to learn but practice makes perfect.
just found this. This is gold
GREAT video. Very helpful for an intermediate rider and developing jumper wannabe like me.
job well done jeff the video tutorial is great thanks
Thank you!
Excellent!!
Really good jump video
This is the best jumping video I’ve ever seen. I watched this yesterday morning and then practiced at Mountain Creek and it was perfect. Thank you!
Congratulation!!! 👏👏👏👏
This is awesome! 🙌🏻
Laura Slavin thanks!!! 🚲🚲🚲
I didn’t hear a word this guy said, I was hypnotized by the Mullet!!!🤦♂️
You should see it now! LOL. worth subscribing to watch.
awesome How to! The explanation with the hook is just brilliant! Thank you Jeff!
glad you liked it!
Thanks dude
The static example with the hook was genius. Thank you! Really enjoying and benefiting from your vids. Cheers.
This was awesome. One of the most useful how to videos I've seen about mtb
Thank you!
Great explanation! I am starting to practice jumps and this is really helpful
Awesome Luis, glad it helps!
The absolutely best bit is f this video is the side by side photo of the long vs high jump body positions.
Fantastic breakdown. The pic at 3:39 is the thing that so many videos don't cover.
Such a boss!
Great how to jump vid! I grew up riding BMX so jumping high was easier for me to master. But jumping high doesn't always work best when bombing down a trail so this is exactly the video I wanted to see. Thanks!
very informative thank you:)
That’s actually the best jump ever.
Super floaty and super smooth.
I want one! 😂
Dude! So well done! At 3:37, that pic really tells the tell on the difference between the two. I rely much more on the speed and height tends to make me uneasy and dead sailor more often, though I'm improving somewhat (I..think).
Great and very original way to picture the different techniques.
Hi Jeff! The entire video is very informative, I especially like the 8 min point.....landing on declines! You make it look so easy! I have watched a lot of your videos, the best way to learn is from the best....a real Trail BOSS!!! 🤗😎
Thank you Roger!
great presentation Jeff … Ive been trying to understand what to do when I get to the ramp for so long and have always been absorbing the energy without ever being able to distinguish those 2 body positions for Low and High ,,, this vid explains it SO well … cant wait to go try it now ...
Salute!!
Awesome video. Really well explained. 😁👊🏻🤟🏻
Thanks Kelly
Great advice as always. It’s good to confirm I am not doing everything wrong when jumping lippy jumps. I tend to keep my body a little forward and knees bent, then just before the lip, push the bike forward and jump with my legs. Sometimes, I position myself back and let the bike do all the work. Maybe that is not the best, but it works when in doubt and when I am tired.
Great explanation. Need to work on my height for the steeper landing.
Really, really good video. Thrilled I found your channel.
Thrilled you’re here!
Great instructional video. I tried going over a rock outcropping a couple days ago. This video will help me figure out what I did wrong the second time and did a “controlled” ditch. Preload, preload, preload 😆😆😆.
Great video Jeff. Thank you for the detailed explanation. Where I live we don't have a lot of trails with manmade jumps. Our jumps are things that occur on natural obstacles such as rocks, log rollovers and dirt rollers. These features have lips and I have seen people jump them, but with no real landing, I never really understood what the bike does after you are in the air.
best jump video ive seen
Liam Reilly thanks!!
Good lesson Jeff..i would love to have been good at jumping.maybe in my next life..
We were just trying to work out how to achieve this the other day by slowing down our approach speed and attempting to stand up in the jump. We were struggling with the concept do we delay the compression until just before the front wheel exits the ramp and stand up but your video explains it much more clearly - thank you !
I agree with cellphonenut. That was a great explanation. I'm 61 years old and I've been riding everything that I could throw my leg over since I was a little tike and I had to learn the hard way. This video could have saved me many injuries. Ah who am I kidding... ya can't teach an old dog new tricks. LOL
Thank you for checking it out!
I will watch this later. When my incapacitating fear of jumping has dwindled enough.
1. The mullet lookin👌 2. Super informative video breaking down jumping techniques
So good. I used to wear out VHS tapes trying to emulate your moves. Thanks for breaking things down so well. #stayrad
Thanks Jeff, my jumping sucks, never had it broken down like that before, can’t wait to give these techniques a go on the trails!
Ian. So, I usually decide whether to pull back hard and extend or keep things in close as I’m approaching the top of the lip. At that point I’m able to get more information on what needs to happen.
great vid Jeff, very well explained! Hit me up next time your in Tampa area again!!
3:37
Similarities between right and left photos:
in both photos, the hips are in the same location (above bottom bracket). Also, the bike is in the same position in both photos
-
Differences:
on the left, his arms are more bent and his back is leaning a little forward. His head is closer to the front wheel. In general, it appears to be he is closer to the bike.
On the right, his arms are less bent, his back is leaning away from the bike, and his head is farther from from the front wheel. In general, it appears to be he is farther from the bike.
-
Here’s how I like to think of it: the right photo is like sitting down in a chair and leaning into it. The left photo is like when your just getting up from the chair
Love your mullet
Sweet👊🏾
@Jeff Lenosky bro are you rocking a shaggy mohawk here? Atta boy 👊🏼 Great vid as usual!
If this is the kind of stuff you're posting on your Patreon page - it is worth it!
Jon Dilley they get it first and you can post videos and I’ll post video responses or tips!
I need that ramp so I could daily practice !
really good tips man. So much harder to put into practice when things are coming up at million ft/s... but you're so right on the repetition to get the muscle memory down... so curious, love your jump builds, wouldn't happen to have specs on those would you?
LoLz> I'm *hooked* !!
Off to spend a cpl K to build a few ramps so I dont *SUCK*,..in the air,.THANKs JEFF for the ProTips!
This is a good explanation. I am really good at the low and far technique because I raced BMX for a long time. I don't have an issue clearing most jumps. I do however struggle on the steeper jumps because I have a tendency to absorb and push forward on the bars as soon as my front wheel clears the top of the transition. I have been working on trying to be back on the bike more and have straighter arms and legs. What keeps me from being consistent at it is a bit of fear. There have been a couple of times I have boosted high off the lip but the front end came up and I almost looped out backwards and a few times I actually have looped out. So because of that, I get a little afraid. What I have learned is to be relaxed because if I am not, I go off the lop stiff and then I don't suck up the bike (pull up with my legs) once off the lip. That is when I will feel like I am going to loop out.
So it's important that riders know to make sure and be relaxed and as soon as the rear wheel leaves the transition they suck up the rear of the bike so they can level off in the air. To learn this it's best to have a table top and start by going pretty slow and not worrying about clearing the jump. Learn the exact same thing Jeff explained here about how to get higher (boost) off the lip. Then progressively work on going a little faster once you get it and remember faster means you have to do all these motions quicker.
I am still working on getting more height. But I am really starting to get the feel for it and now it's just jumping more and getting more consistent. I am also 53 and have to undo years of BMX racing habits.
Great video explain how to do the take off! I loved the hook idea! Nice work!
Bmx is about going as fast as possible so that makes sense! Just practice the progression in small steps and you’ll get it dialed.
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss Thanks. That is totally the plan and it is working slowly but surely.
Man, Im glad you are jumping at that age because Im 50 and always wanted to jump and soar through the air but thought Im foolish. Im fit, limber, good health, and 165lb and feel like I can do it if I overcome the fear. I started yesterday with a small tabletop and started feeling comfortable besides banging my right knee hard on the top bar and then the rear axle broke(cheap mtb).
I looked at a 29er yesterday but I feel like the wheels would be to big to control on jumps.
Im glad I ran into this video and your comment.
Thank you, Jorge
Shad Life I have the same issue, bmx to supermoto racing and I suck up every jump I hit because if my wheels aren’t on the ground I’m not on the throttle. At 43 got me a mtb hopper and I get great distance but for the life of me cannot get that vert air. Just have to keep hitting it.
I can definitely relate. What helps me practice is doing a high bunny hop on the flat. So.. I preload (down and back) then really *BOOST* (up and forward) with arms going straight and my chest close to the bars.
It's a far safer way because on grass I can fall off and be fine 😊
Thank you Jeff this is super helpful. My challenge, Coming from mostly road/xc clipless riding, my natural form is to squash the jump. and shoulders/upper body to far over the bars. a.k.a Bad form. I just put flats on to practice that bunny hop/ popping up/ standing up skill. Standing up in the air is not clicking. I will check out the patreon options.
-Sam
MTB Zen Master thanks Sam. Practicing bunnyhops will be super helpful
The mullet is badass
When you rolled your front tire I thought about how many wheel sets you used to keep in your demo van setup..🤔 now I know why you had so many extra Wheels 🤘😂👍
Thank you for the tips. You're right about 100s and 100s of (correct) repetition. That's how I learned how to bunny hop at 49 years of age. Anything's possible with a lot of practice...
Uuuuuoonm ,,a
So underrated
Applause
Thank you! Share it!
Damn, you are amazing.. I wish I could get half as good as you. I'm Always ginger on the trail
Great video! I tend to get bucked forward off of jumps, going to try and session some jumps while sessioning this video!👍🏼
Anthony Zrillo awesome!! Try the “low” technique for to counteract that and purposely preload!
Jeff Lenosky Will do. If I ever catch you at Glen Park I’ll need a quick tutor sesh! Haha
Try adjusting your rebound on the rear shock
Getting bucked forward can be a function of only loading the rear suspension due to fear and leaning backwards.
Otwarte zlamanie… no Borkoś!! 😉
Wish I would’ve watched this before dislocating my finger on a large Slopestyle line this week haha…Gonna let it heal, back up a bit and really employ these techniques before progressing further ;)
where were you riding?
