- It's time to do a spot clean and tidy up of Kashi's cage! 😊 I've had Kashi for over a month now, if you can believe it! Although I've done some basic cleaning and tidying as needed, it was time to do a more thorough job of it. I'll show you some sections that need it more than others, but overall Kashi hasn't really messed things up too badly. I'm finding this setup quite easy to clean and maintain so far. HoppingHammy please help me! I really want a hammy and do not know what to do. I have a guinea pig that I love, care for, and play with. I have done tons of research in a notebook. I know everything about them, been responsible, had money, and even have a spot for the cage to fit at. I have asked twice and both nos. I do not want to ask to many times or it will make them want to say no more. Please help me I am very confused. I just want a little hammy!🐹😢🐹😢🐹😢
Gosh that cage is HUGE! You don't notice until you're sitting in front of it! I so wish i could have that large of a cage!

What a wonderful cage for a small pet. I can just see several more hamsters in that cage. But of course that would require more cleaning but it would be so fun to watch.

I used to have many hamsters, so I would like to give an advice: Put that glass jar with the sand in that corner where he pees. They are like cats and need sand for peeing (do NOT use the cat litter clumping sand, it would stick on their paws). I used normal sand in cans or glasses and they never peed somewhere else, only inside the cans. Since their pee gets a heavy stench rather quickly, it is thus very easy to take the glass and clean it daily and replace the sand. They poop everywhere, but it dries up and there is a much larger time span to need to clean the complete floor (should be done once a month). Nice video! Thank you for sharing and for taking care of an animal.

Hehe thankfully it doesn't need cleaning very often, but I tend to find it satisfying to tidy everything and have it looking nice again. :) My own room on the other hand.......... *glares at mess* I should probably do something about that!

Thank you so much! :) It's quite easy to maintain and keep up with so far, and having a natural type of setup seems to hide the fact when it gets a little messy. (Bedding out of place, grasses knocked over, etc.) I basically just do the areas that need it as they need it, so that way nothing gets too overwhelming and it isn't all at once. Are you really supposed to clean out the nest that often? I never knew that. I do clean it out but not every other day.
Hey HyperHam! :) It really depends on the hamster and how tidy they are. Kashi unfortunately pees in her nest and stashes all of her food, so it starts to get smelly by the second day. For hamsters who leave their nest area to pee in a different part of the cage, you don't have to clean it that often. It's still good to check on their food stash though, just to ensure nothing is going moldy with the moisture and heat that can build up in their nest. I'm also still learning what Kashi likes and doesn't like in terms of fresh food, so this helps me to monitor and make sure nothing is spoiling or being left behind.
HoppingHammy ohhh okay. That reminds me I’m going to do some cleaning up in zooms cage later. She still has some holiday decorations and I think I’m going to go to a natural theme :)
Aww! Congratulations on 1 month with Kashi! ❤️ I always start coughing and sneezing when I have to clean my pets out haha! I’ve thought about investing in a mask to wear so I don’t have to breathe in all the particulars haha

Thank you! Yes I always love watching the other cage cleaning videos on CZcams too. 😊 I'm thankful that so far this cage is very easy to clean and maintain! I think having a natural setup helps too. With colorful bedding themes, everything has to stay in place to look tidy and the poops show up fast! With natural bedding and different substrates mixed together, it hides the "mess" a bit better but still looks nice. I can totally relate to having to wear a mask whenever cleaning out pet cages! I used to have to wear one whenever I had a guinea pig because I'm actually allergic to him, but he was so worth it
Aw I'm sorry! It's no fun to be allergic. I think it's actually the bedding that bothers me most, not the hamster. I had the same reaction when I set up the cage theme before ever getting Kashi. It's frustrating because even a mask won't stop me from sneezing for 2 days straight! Lol! :( Thank you! :)

I was one of the people who asked how you clean the cage. Glad you made a follow-up video! By the way, my hamster also pees on her exercise wheel. It makes the cage smell really bad, because plastic obviously doesn't absorb the smell like Carefresh does. I'll clean the wheel, put it back in the cage, and then by the next day it's all peed up again. And my hamster's not a baby, either. She's almost 1-1/2 years old.
Aw, I totally hear you on the wheel peeing! Unfortunately that seems to be quite common for hamsters to do. It helps a lot to wipe the wheel daily, that way the smell never really builds up or cakes into the wheel as badly as if it were to sit and soak in for days. I've found this Carolina Storm Express wheel to be super easy to clean though - far easier than a Comfort wheel or Silent Spinner with all of the grooves! :)
+HoppingHammy I've got a rat-sized comfort wheel in hamster's cage. I'll admit, I never thought of wiping it down daily! Usually I wait a week till the smell gets really bad, then I'll wash it in the sink with soap and water. And you're right, the ridges make it hard to clean. I looked up the Carolina Storm Express, and it might be a solution for making cleaning easier. I'll definitely consider buying it.

Loved the design of the cage but have some questions. How do you locate all of your hamster's poop and urine traces? How about if ants or other insects get into the cage, how will you be able to see that?

Hello Emma! :) I do think my preference is to keep that cage as a natural setup going forward in future. It matches nicely in my office and does offer a lot for a hamster to do and explore. It's closer to their real environment too. I'm going to talk about this question more in a future video and go

Oh whoops! You're right, I never did end up making the cage building video hehe. :) I have to admit I've waited so long now that I don't even remember all the details, but the cage "plans" were written on a paper somewhere and also saved with the receipts of everything that was bought for the cage. If I can ever find those and get in a proper mood to make that video, maybe I will!

Good job cleaning that large cage! Maybe she changes her sleeping spot so often because you clean her nest out every other day? I don't know for sure but often small animals like to rearrange things when they get new, clean bedding.
That would be a good theory except she had been doing this when I first got her, before even cleaning any of her nests out. :) :) She seems to have finally settled down now! It's interesting how each hamster has such different behavior and personality!
amazing home for the hamster. you could have 15 inch of bedding for your hamster to burrow in 1 massive area.
My hamster dislikes hidey houses too she rather burrow. There are only some that she like. For example; A Christmas mug!! 😂🐹
