I'm fully with you Scooby. I've been recommending to interested people to get a doorway pullup and a set of gymnastics rings (which you can suspend using the bar) And as far as fold-down beds go, I've been using a hammock for a few years. I wouldn't recommend it to everybody but I can vouch that they're a lot cheaper than murphy beds or any beds for that matter. I think the number of gyms that won't make it past next year is going to be large, despite slowly opening nationally. I really miss the smaller non corporate gyms. In my area, they're all gone. Even though I'm an educated man, I looked at the membership agreement from Gold's last year and decided I needed an accountant and an attorney just to read it. I remember telling the gym dude it's as complicated as a mortgage, and it shouldn't be, and just walked away. Planet Fitness, at least in my area, will solely take payment directly from a checking account. They will not accept a credit card, check, or even cash paid up front. The reason I think is because canceling your membership is meant to be as difficult as leaving a scientology cult. They, along with some others, deserve to fail. I hate to say it, but sometimes capitalism is like Darwinism, it serves not just to eliminate the weak, but in this case, the bad as well.

Facts. The powerlifting gym in my area which I frequented two years back is also closed now. I wouldn't have minded paying $50 to use that facility that's open 24/7 and has rogue equipment.
In my country, almost any modestly sized town has a locally owned gym or athletic club you can sign up for. It's heaven, honestly. I've never had a membership at a commercial chain gym.

Im fortunate enough to have a garage gym with squat rack, powertec lever, bars, plates, dumbbells, kettle bells, medicine balls and bands. Oh yeah, and spin bike. One of the best things Ive ever done.
Scoobs is right about those band, only flat ones are good. I added kettlebels to this, they never break and used ones go for as much as new ones so you can sell them later if you want to move on.
Coll tip: If you have a basement gym, you can attach equipment to the steel I-beam supporting the floor joists using I-beam clamps (no drilling). For example: speed bag, heavy bag, pull-up bar, and hooks for resistance tubes, trx style chains, etc..
Rather than the nesting stands, I’d suggest the rogue or titan fitness fold back wall mounted rack and safety spotter arms. When not in use they fold back so they virtually take up no space at all. You also get a ton of functionality as they can pretty much serve as a full power rack when in use. You can attach a pull up bar, dip attachment, and an almost endless variety of implements to it when in use as well.
The problem with those is that they require VERY serious anchoring to the wall. In fact, knowing how walls are constructed, I would not trust the studs in the wall not to rip out if the bar weight is over 225lbs
scooby1961 I own it and know several people that own them and it’s been very secure (600 pound squatter here). I imagine if they weren’t, rogue fitness, which is a big company, would inevitably have a lot of lawsuits on their hands as they sell thousands of these racks. On the other hand, I’ve seen some pretty bad accidents on those nesting stands. Just my two cents. In addition, I don’t think the studs are directly supporting the entire weight based on the engineering of the rack.
scooby1961 there are so many people who use these types of racks, thousands of reviews of them online, and I have not heard one instance of studs ripping out. I’m not trying to be argumentative and really appreciate the content you put out as it is really spot on, but I do think there have definitely been some really great developments in the home gym equipment sector in the past decade that has changed the game. A great channel to check out stuff in the home gym department is with Coop at garagegymreviews.
My home gym during this lockdown has been a pair of gymnastics rings, a tree at a local running park. Some rocks I found at said park. A bunch of big sticks I found under the tree. Some resistance bands my sister bought but never used. Also filled some plant pots with concrete and put another big stick inside so I can do deadlifts Gym rings are so versatile for training really they're amazing. Any container filled with concrete = weight. Shove a stick in there and you got a dumbell. Not gonna lie, concrete will take up more space than iron. But you can work around that. I made a lat pulldown machine using the big sticks, the tree and those resistance bands. Btw good trees make amazing pull up bars, just make sure to check the tree out. A decent comfortable Backpack filled with rocks works well for added weight to exercises.
My home gym was the best thing I've ever done. Lots of ultra thin plates compatible with a 1m barbell and 2 dumbbells, resistance bands, home made suspension trainer and a pull up bar. I can now workout before work where as my gym doesn't open until 9 so I had to go in the evening.
I bought a set of those bad resistance bands and just recently, while working out, my brother snapped one of them in two. Now I know never too get those ones again I'm so glad that I had also bought the proper ones cause I don't have space in the house for pretty much anything (will look into the nesting stands btw) so using that set has become the basis of my, and familys', workouts.
I got an ironmaster kit that since moving house have only used partially. by far the best things I got from Ironmaster due to my current living situation is the bench and dumbbell set. and the bench attachments that have pullup and leg curl options and the plates for the dumbells go a fair way up in weight. i did buy a full kit but theres no where to set up the stuff here so the dumbbells bench and bench attachments were by far the best equipment ive bought if i had a configuration like you suggested like the fold down bed it would be sick but unfortunately for me in Australia you cant have any heavy gym equipment in the house so it shares the shed with my car :). on the bright side the smith machine is packed up and the lat pulldown stuff is all boxed up out of the way. the best stuff like i said was the dumbbell kit and bench because of how much you can do with just that and a few attachments for the bench itself.
I bought a half rack with pull up bar and spotter arms man am i glad i did. It takes up little space in the garage and its there without any setting up.
It is not just getting gently used equipment from someone that previously used for their home to keep busy during the beer virus but you will find nice deals on high quality equipment from formerly upper middle class people that also lost their jobs due to the beer virus.
I’m fortunate enough to have a double garage so have a space for my home gym which has a power rack with many attachments and a lat pull down/ low row. A weight tree and several specialty bars in the corner as well. Had it for 4 years and never looked back. Motivation never been a problem but I like to minimise moving things around and setting up things etc.
I got a rack with a bench, barbell, plates, single cheapo cable machine, airbike, resistance bands, and I built my own plyobox and dumbell rack out of wood and also dumbbells out of concrete. Cost me about 1k in total buying THE CHEAPEST stuff I could and fits in one room in the house. I love it tho!! Wish I had a hack squat, but I got everything I need. I'm thinking about doing my own fun gym tour video sometime
Funny you mentioned the foldable bed Scoob! It was the gateway to save rent on a room and the gym fees for me. I built a lightweight wooden bed frame made out of spruce with small wheels underneath the short end facing the wall (overall cost: ~60€ in Germany). I can easily move it off the wall, lift it up and have it stand tight and upright against the wall, giving me the space I need to workout. That allowed a cheap half rack to fit comfortably in the room, which also killed two birds with one stone since it has a pull up bar and saves the trouble in a rental apartment with low doors and very thick walls. Heck, it even made it possible to get me a permanent space for my Kurt Kinetic bike trainer! :-D Always amazed what one half-good idea and a little fiddling with DIY can do
I have pull up assist resistance bands, getting a pull up bar... And got an ab wheel. I work out in my office since my gym fits on a chair. Bodyweight and bands work for me.
From my experience the 'round resistance bands' aren't all that bad - the resistance is stackable, they come with handles and they don't melt or snap as easily as pullup assistance bands do. One $10 set is generally enough for lateral raises, and there is decent enough resistance for standing ab crunches and facepulls. Two $10 sets and you are golden. Did anybody else have a different experience?
Yeah i have 2 sets of loops, and 3 sets of tubing, both great, don't need to start that apple x orange if look at right perspective which is have more options for training at home
great set of mind with great advise however one word of caution here when you tell people to use the ceiling to hook things into it make sure you also tell them that that the ceiling will not support bodies over 300 lbs and the bolt has to be long enough into the joist or into the 4x6 that it can hold a body for several seconds up to a minute, again some people, no offense, but do not think on their own and may just make a mess into the ceiling or get injured
7:47 okay real talk that would half to be on the coolest Murphy needs I've seen. Like it's such a good use of the folded away bed to act as a massive mirror
Olympic weights, squat rack, pull up bar.. perfect all you need. I bought a heavy duty squat rack other year for 200 pounds, the same website sells it for 400 now since covid.
My apartment has a patio on the second floor I set up a half rack there that has dip attachment and a landmine attachment to do t bar rows. I honestly love my setup. The only thing I don’t understand is why Olympic for squats? I use standard and never had a problem
I've been working out at home for years in the spare room and now in a position that I've got a garage to work out in instead. My weight plates had taken a real beating over the years and decided to refurb them since some had actually started to rust. It cost £9 for the materials on Amazon to do it, compared to spending £xxx amount on new plates. I wish people would look to either refurb plates they've already got, or get the ones you suggested Scooby and then refurb them after the fact. They look as good as new, and with the several coats of paint, they're even heavier than they were when I first bought them 😋
Just finishing my rehab on recent knee surgery, they have the suspension training set and it is really nice but after checking the price on Amazon, I’ll be looking for your video on homemade one, thanks
How do you feel about a total gym? I got one used for cheap. I really like the upper body workout I get from it a d the attachment I have lets me do assisted pullups and assisted “hand stand” push ups. It could fold up too although I just leave it open.

Great advice as always scoob
Hot damn, you rock!!! Thank You!!!! All of this is in my reach, yaaaaaa!
:)
Now I know never too get those ones again
I'm so glad that I had also bought the proper ones cause I don't have space in the house for pretty much anything (will look into the nesting stands btw) so using that set has become the basis of my, and familys', workouts.
I started working out in 2009. Pretty much all my knowledge about working out comes from Scooby from types of exercises all the way to nutrition.
I got an ironmaster kit that since moving house have only used partially. by far the best things I got from Ironmaster due to my current living situation is the bench and dumbbell set. and the bench attachments that have pullup and leg curl options and the plates for the dumbells go a fair way up in weight. i did buy a full kit but theres no where to set up the stuff here so the dumbbells bench and bench attachments were by far the best equipment ive bought if i had a configuration like you suggested like the fold down bed it would be sick but unfortunately for me in Australia you cant have any heavy gym equipment in the house so it shares the shed with my car :). on the bright side the smith machine is packed up and the lat pulldown stuff is all boxed up out of the way. the best stuff like i said was the dumbbell kit and bench because of how much you can do with just that and a few attachments for the bench itself.
thanks Scoob
I bought a half rack with pull up bar and spotter arms man am i glad i did. It takes up little space in the garage and its there without any setting up.
It is not just getting gently used equipment from someone that previously used for their home to keep busy during the beer virus but you will find nice deals on high quality equipment from formerly upper middle class people that also lost their jobs due to the beer virus.
Great to see Scooby back
I never left!
I bought some pullup assist bands and I have one pair of dumbbells, could this enough for strength and muscle gains?
I love the sound of the fountain in the background
What do you think of those sandbags with the handles? Do you think those are a good one to get?
Gymnastics: your gym is you.
if that is your goal, awesome!
Just resistance bands working so well for me
From my experience the 'round resistance bands' aren't all that bad - the resistance is stackable, they come with handles and they don't melt or snap as easily as pullup assistance bands do. One $10 set is generally enough for lateral raises, and there is decent enough resistance for standing ab crunches and facepulls. Two $10 sets and you are golden. Did anybody else have a different experience?
Yeah i have 2 sets of loops, and 3 sets of tubing, both great, don't need to start that apple x orange if look at right perspective which is have more options for training at home
excellent video. great advice. very much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
great set of mind with great advise however one word of caution here when you tell people to use the ceiling to hook things into it make sure you also tell them that that the ceiling will not support bodies over 300 lbs and the bolt has to be long enough into the joist or into the 4x6 that it can hold a body for several seconds up to a minute, again some people, no offense, but do not think on their own and may just make a mess into the ceiling or get injured
scooby's alive! good to see you still around! by the way, you can make chapters by typing the time stamps in the description.
I actually was going to do that and forgot
Hey Scooby, any chance of you creating some form of instructional video on how to build your custom attachments for the Valor BD-2/9? That is awesome!
Sorry, not enough interest.
I know! I probably spent $200 for my entire setup in 650lbs of plates. I could get a 10x return on investement by selling it now.
My apartment has a patio on the second floor I set up a half rack there that has dip attachment and a landmine attachment to do t bar rows. I honestly love my setup.
The only thing I don’t understand is why Olympic for squats? I use standard and never had a problem
I also like to wear the waist band of my shorts just below my chest
Same.
59 and still making gains. Nice job Scooby.
They look as good as new, and with the several coats of paint, they're even heavier than they were when I first bought them 😋
How long does it take to be able to do pull ups with your pull up video?
Just finishing my rehab on recent knee surgery, they have the suspension training set and it is really nice but after checking the price on Amazon, I’ll be looking for your video on homemade one, thanks
biggest advantage of a home gym is squatting naked over a stand up mirror i have laying on the ground.
careful, if the mirror you are standing on breaks, you could seriously slice up your feet.
How do you feel about a total gym? I got one used for cheap. I really like the upper body workout I get from it a d the attachment I have lets me do assisted pullups and assisted “hand stand” push ups. It could fold up too although I just leave it open.
I dont need to google it. I can tell you that it costs 5x more and is inferior to the basic equipment I told you to buy in this video.
What purpose does the suspender serve that that the barbel and pullup bar can't do?
Following the news from the East coast it's hard to determine who lives in a danger zone and who doesn't. Glad to see no smokiness in this video. Except in the arms and pecs of course.🤗
I like the bands..affordable and portable
