- I've been covering some the best ETFs for dividend income.
Ones that have the highest dividend yields and are not dividend traps.
I find that day by day, Income ETFs are becoming a lot more popular, with new ones being announced almost every month, which is very exciting. Considering the current recessionary climate High income alternatives are becoming more and more important.
And each one has their own take on income generation. So i try my best to find these new ETFs, and evaluate them.
Now The majority of these high Dividend ETFs often use a very similar strategy.
And that is to sell covered calls against there underlying holdings in order to generate premium. And that premium is then distributed to investors in the form of a dividend yield. Upwards of 10 to 12%.
And these ETFs are known as covered call ETFs.
But recently a new fund has taken an entirely new approach on income generation, using a very unique method where they use put options as opposed to call options, creating a series of ETFs that generate astronomical dividend yields, upwards of 50%. Which is insane.
Now I did review an etf a week ago that uses the same strategy, but there are some major differences with regards to risk that needs to be addressed and investor need to know about.
So what is this new method? And most importantly, is it a dividend trap?
This is where things get really interesting.

These funds are so new that only time will tell if they work out. I personally own 500 shares of QQQY and I am tracking it closely .

@@Tackling_TommyThey have nothing supporting the share price other than people buying. In other words take TSLY for example. It's a covered call option "Yieldmax" fund that holds no shares of Tesla as an underlying asset. So it catches all of the downside and none of the upside. In a recession when everyone is selling and only very few are buying (potentially $0.00 or, close to it, dividend for a period of time) shares could go to zero as investors lose faith.

Here’s a few words from the wise, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I would avoid these funds until I see a 2 year track record at least.

In two years, you would get back all of your investment and then, even if it declines in the NAV you would still be ahead of the game after that. Specially, for a retiree that’s just looking for cash flow your thoughts, great videos by the way.
With caveat. Each months distributed dividend is subtracted from NAV leaving a smaller balance for income yield generation. Even if you DRIP year end taxes are generated in a non sheltered vehicle.
@@ronaldnishimura8357the caveat to that is that the nav is not a set number, it can go up or down with the index.
@@ronaldnishimura8357 you’re right absolutely I’m just thinking if you hold it and continue to take the dividend your NAV Willy Road but I think the large, but may be inconsistent dividends would give you that extra cash flow especially in a tax-free Roth situation because you can’t take it with you as well use it while you’re retired

Although unlikely, a large down move or black swan event could do major damage to this fund. Time will tell how this fund will perform in a volatile market.

8 months down the road, you guys might want to check the "price" of the JEPY. Attracted by the high DY at first but after doing some reading, realised that it might not be the suitable tool for long-term investment...

You can sell covered calls your self but the issue is the cash for selling puts of the shares for covered calls😅

So basically it's the first half of the wheel strategy (sell put - if assigned then sell cc) but rather than being assigned and selling calls they just eat the loss for the day, right?
yes. It is an index option that only settles in cash.
Fascinating vehicles. I guess if NAV decay causes NAV too low, then ETF will sell below NAV which is another risk...is that possible/probable?
They will probably reduce the dividend to keep a set amount of cash as collateral.

TSLY went down like 40% even though its giving good dividends. Wonder if JEPY will follow the same path.
That is why you have to DRIP it.
Thought options expire every Friday. How can the ETF do a 1 DTE every day? Seems like a once a week time frame.
Indexes like spx and ndx provide option contracts that expire daily, different from what were used to, and spy and qqq also provide these daily option contracts as well. What's funny is almost 20-40% (have to double check the number) of option trading volume on spx is 0DTE contracts, it's becoming very popular! But they carry so much risk due to theta decay that it's really a day trading tactic

yes definitely, NAV depletion is the biggest issue with these ETFs, same with QQQY. If they don't generate enough income, they rely on ROC, but recently both ETFs cut their dividend yields significantly in order to conserve NAV, Made a video on it recently going over everything in detail if you'd like to see it! :) czcams.com/video/sl6nkSbWDtk/video.html

Qqqy and jepy have severe NAV depletion simply because of the massive yield they promise, I outlined it in my recent video. personally I feel the best high income investments should have the least amount of NAV depletion to genuinely provide good returns and should not rely on return of capital, so with interest rates dropping, I don't think it would really change that

No strategies will save NAV. These dividend etfs do lure you for income but eat away your capital.
Last 6 months QQQ went up so much but QYLD got stuck at 17. Its chart shows it has been dropping for last ten years.

What would happen if a black swan event happened overnight? The equity in the fund would be wiped out? Do the managers have a plan for such an event? This looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

I have a little less than that, I do 70% SCHD and 30% JEPI. With that much you want the higher tilt to be in SCHD because of the quilted dividends and lower expense ratio.
