    One of my treasured possessions is a photograph of myself on my trike in front of of my late fathers Mark 2 Jaguar. This model inspired me so much that in 1966 I announced that I would one day own my own example. My parents laughed and said that by the time I grew up all Jaguar Mark 2 models would be scrapped. How wrong they were and in the late 1990’s up until 2001 I owned a 3.8 litre example. They are the best looking saloon car in the world IMHO.

      I had a Skyline V35, which I loved. The same idea as the Mark II, but objectively better in every respect (as it should have been, that much later). But in no way has it extinguished my feelings about the Jaguar, and I fear I could still do something foolish one day. Possibly the best looking car of any kind, ever.

      I did a stint in a classic car restoration garage, mostly MG's (still have PTSD from rebuilding those). The best moments were working on a MKII Jaaaag, in metallic navy and cream interior. I loved that car and still do. Used to stay after hours just to spend more time buffing the paint, cleaning parts and just admiring every single inch of it. They are a lovable, non pretentious tour de force of engineering and style - my 'some day' car.

    I really think you should publicly appreciate Miss HubNut's work even more, Ian, as she's really doing a cracking job making the unit roomier, in the process granting you access to all kinds of things you might not even remember being there (like feeler gauges). I do hope her work isn't rendered useless in a couple of weeks ...😉

    Just finished this same job this weekend. I blame you for this as your video's made me buy one. :) Most fun I've had with cars in years. Also if I don't have an empty oil bottle handy I change the oil and filter then add in 1 bottle of oil I then cut the side out of that bottle and use that to catch the oil from the valve covers. Also has a built in pour spout.

    Always used to adjust tappets so that there was some drag on them where some people would insist that the gap would be too tight using that method. That was way back on Ford Crossflows, Mini's, 1100 Austin's etc.
    Not done tappets for many a year or much mechanicing at all.
    Swapped an auto gearbox in a Rover 2600 TC with the car just up on ramps many years back finishing the job on Xmas eve for a friend of my Dad's only for him to tell me and my friend that he had no money. Had hair full of hypoid, ATF Fluid and other detritus from his rural driveway. 2 days hard graft for nothing. Needless to say - not the best Xmas ever.
    Another year, we both welded crashbars onto 3 wagon trailers on Xmas Eve and that business owner, well he bounced a cheque on us. Steadfastly refused to work on anything on Xmas Eve from those points onwards. Got the money in the end, but not when we needed it.
    Always tell my friends and anyone who will listen to change their oil, filter, plugs, etc once a year at least irrespective of mileage. Usually do-able yourself for around £60 on most cars which is around a £1 a week over the year so stupid not to.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  Před 10 dny

      Always worrying. That said, it does take a very long time to get the oil temp up, even on warmer days. For most shorter journeys, it probably wouldn't matter. Throw in a few hills or traffic jams and things will definitely get hot...

  • @Candisa
    @Candisa Před 9 dny

    I probably should check the valves on my 2CV soon. I have a set of feeler gauges somewhere, but I have never done this... I know if the valves are too tight you risk burning the valves, is there a technical downside to valves being slightly too loose apart from sounding a bit tappier and maybe losing a fraction of a horsepower? Do the clearances tend to get tigher or looser over time?

    • @HubNut

    Not a good idea lobbing off fan blades willy-nilly.
    It will throw the thing out of balance. Yes, they are balanced.
    As for power difference:
    That fan will PULL fresh air into the engine bay and cooling cowling.
    Yes, that takes some power when the engine is idling or pootleing along in a trafic jam.
    But as soon as the car is at speed the speed of the car actually feeds the fan and basically takes over (ram-air). IMO this negates the parasitic loss of the fan.
