    A nuclear bomb cannot detonate because it "crashes to the ground". Nuclear warheads are not impact sensitive like conventional explosives.
    Here's how it works. You build a normal bomb and it is filled with chemical energy just itching to explode. All you need is a little igniter or shock and the chemical explosives release all their energy at once. Even dropping on the ground hard enough could set them off. A plane crash probably would.
    A nuclear warhead is different. After it has been built it does not want to go off. It is almost impossible to set off a nuclear warhead. The explosives used have to be perfectly shaped and have to detonate at precisely the correct time and location meaning the explosion envelope must be perfectly formed. The high speed capacitors used for this are very carefully guarded and it is almost impossible to get one. We needed one for research purposes and ended up meeting with the USDOD before getting approval. The electronics used to deliver the high speed detonation sequence signals are very specialized and far beyond conventional computers.
    In fact nuclear bombs are so damn fussy if you left one alone for a few years it would no longer function. Why? Because the radioactive charge is decaying all the time. It will quickly fall below critical mass. Every few years you have to take the charge out and re-purify it to get it back to critical mass which is required to sustain a nuclear chain reaction.
    Nuclear Bombs Don't Want To Explode! Just remember this and you will have a better understanding.

    • @wernerboden239
      @wernerboden239 Před 5 lety

      Nope, usually not.
      But there have been plenty of instances, where a bomb almost detonated.
      Because ... guess what .. they have a trigger.
      For instance, a barometric pressure sensor.
      It does not trigger on impact, rather a mile above ground.
      And it is usually human error that have caused many near misses, when
      bombs were dropped and such, by accident, and a single fail safe, prevented catastrophy.
      Computers, that manage complex systems, to prevent detonation, that are
      still running on floppy discs !
      For decades, the millitary did not bother with launch codes 00000000, because
      the system should work, without the president's approval.
      The least of our worries, is detonation, due to impact.
      It is all those other things, that we cannot even predict, that can go wrong.
      We have been extremely lucky, so far.

    • @chrism3fbp507
      @chrism3fbp507 Před 4 lety +4

      Modern nuclear weapons like you say can't be detonated by accident but in the 40's and 50's they had no computers, a uranium bullet was fired into the core of the bomb to create critical mass, I can imagine they might detonate in a crash.

    Okay, here's another reality check. When you look at photos of Hiroshima after the atomic bomb had been detonated you see basically a cityscape that has been flattened and turned mostly to ash. It is a mistake to think that the bomb did all of this. The bulk of the damage, particularly turning the city to ash is the result of fire.
    Fire is the thing that will cause the greatest amount of damage and literally drop a city to the ground.
    It doesn't matter if the fires are caused by war, earthquake, flood, or any other natural and man made disasters. Fire itself wreaks terrible destruction wherever it goes. This is why where I live everyone straps down their gas water heaters or secure other gas appliances.
    Your chances of surviving a nuclear bomb are pretty good if you're not at ground zero. Your chances of surviving the resulting fires and weeks of Cholera outbreaks are rather slim.
    Hiroshima was destroyed by war. However if you think that a small nuclear warhead can cause that sort of destruction just from its explosive power you are mistaken. It was fire.
