As a web developer I will tell you anyone with the skills and a server can build a 'TikTok' - what's the government going to do - force anyone who can code and owns a server to register with the government and give 100% access to client's data and encryption keys? Make developers and software companies pay million dollar licensing fees that stipulate any moment inspections of the software, code, servers, etc? The problem with social media isnt 'social media' - its the fact American culture is in decline and Americans have no self-discipline and live in a 'look at me' culture. You can't pass laws to fix your culture.

All this bill does is give Companies like Facebook a monopoly on data collection in the US. American data brokers sell all this info to foreign countries on a daily basis, yes even hostile ones. Facebook wants to be the only middle man when it comes to peoples data, that is why this is a bill getting bipartisan support both sides of the isle get campaign contributions from companies like Facebook and google.
If congress wanted to do something good for people it would make laws about data privacy. It would ban companies from collecting and selling data across the board, then it wouldn’t matter who owned a company. But they won’t do that because then American tech companies won’t get there billions and politicians won’t get their millions in kickbacks and contributions.

The most disgusting thing is that they also force Apple and Android app stores to ban downloads of TikTok, just like they did to Huawei. The bottom line of the United States is that there is no bottom line and no standards. Standards and laws can change at any time. There is even special legislation to take away TikTok. Is the United States the world’s beacon of democracy? freedom of speech? It's all a joke.

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

The servers cannot be located in China, and even those who want to use them in China cannot use them. The auditors are also Americans. TikTok’s shareholding structure is 60% owned by American-dominated global investors, 20% owned by employees, and 20% owned by parent company ByteDance. , TikTok is essentially an American company, but the U.S. government and the capital behind it cannot fully control this media, and neither can the Chinese government. It’s as simple as that. There is a lot of negative news about China and a lot of negative news about the United States on TikTok. It is one of the most neutral platforms and the freest platform in the world.
