How to Replace a Broken Coil Spring

  • Here's how to replace a broken front or rear coil spring on your car!
    Coil springs on your car can snap or fail due to corrosion, overload or fatigue stresses over time. They can also sag causing suspension to bottom out.
    In this video, the rear coil spring is replaced on a Toyota Sienna which should be the same procedure for any vehicle with a torsion beam rear suspension. The front coil spring is replaced on a Toyota Camry, which should be the same procedure for any vehicle with a McPherson strut suspension.
    The rear coil must be slightly compressed with a jack before the shock can be disconnected. The torsion beam is then lowered on both sides, allowing the spring to fall out. On some models (such as AWD), spring compressors may need to be used as there isn't enough room when the torsion beam has pivoted out of the way. When installing, the coil is to be seated at the top first, and then slipped in the bottom, with someone putting pressure to force the torsion beam down. Take note that the spring sits in its correct seat and orientation.
    The front coils are pretensioned and held on with the strut mount nut. Spring compressors must be used to squeeze the spring and take the tension off the mount before removing. When assembling, replace the bump stop, boot, bearing, mount or strut if worn. Take note of the spring, mount and upper spring seat orientation.

    Been in there many times throughout the years due to the crappy roads I drive on.
    Concerning the front struts, life becomes so much easier if you start off by just loosening the upper nut even before jacking up the car, otherwise the strut shaft will just spin and it's a hassle to get a grip on it with the tension already released.

If you replace the back ones with OEM springs, the back will sit higher than the front, and if you replace the front ones, the front will sit higher than the back. Here's a tip, if you live in an area where they salt the roads, buy all your cars new and plan on exchanging them for a newer model every 4 to 5 years. Just look at the corrosion on the under side of this car. If you must buy a used car go to California or Florida and get it there.

    • @user-yl2wm2gy3z
      @user-yl2wm2gy3z Před 4 lety +1

      Depends on the car really. Cars made with such climates in mind usually have beefed up corrosion protection (like volvos for example). Also cold climate spec cars usually have smaller radiators, so that's something to watch out for.
