- A review of a can of little sardines turned into a review of two cans. Wait are these the same can??
On test:
Maria Organic Small Sardine in Organic EVOO
Jose Gourmet Small Sardines in EVOO
JOIN MY FUN PATREON, there are videos in there you have never seen:

There once was a guy named Matt who loved seafood in a can. He wanted to help spread the joy that he had all over this land.
His wife thought he was crazy and said your videos will fall flat. Matt said just wait till they all try a sprat. She rolled her eyes and just walked away while Matt sat and planned his video that would be released the very next day.
He needed a line or even a hook. What are we even doing here?, was all that it took. It may seem odd to some and make them cringe in fear, but to those in the know, it's music to their ears.
So sit back and relax and grab a tin or two and after a while, it will become clear what we really are doing here.
That's a good one, Lucky, thank you!
@@CannedFishFiles I get creative at times lol
@@lucky43113 when I’m cracking a tin of sprays I like to recite the sacred motto “What am I even doing here”. It’s very Zen
@@j2kerrigan Thanks
@@CannedFishFiles when you're eating Spanish sardines I'd like to recommend you play some Spanish musica.
men tend to get caught up on the size of their cans but remember: it's the quality of the lil swimmers inside that matter
😂😂😂
"Every fish is its own fish", words to live by brother.
I haven't commented since like 2020, still appreciate the quality content.
Clicked on to CZcams expecting nothing new,
to my surprise, up pops an unusual looking cat…His name was Matthew.
He calmly spoke no crap as he showed us how to eat a proper pack.
There I sat as Matt explained, texture, size, price and spice,
His taste buds are acute and incredibly precise.
No doubt he was speaking facts. I thought “this guy really knows His sprats."
He’s not tickled by wine that is fine,
To him, real quality is in the spine.
Don’t offer him things that shine
Unless you're talking sparkly foiled skin in seasoned brine.
Seasoned oil is what makes this man’s toes coil.
So watch this cat Matt pick up his sticks as he shows you his favorite picks.
The next video I won’t miss, there ain’t no fish that he will diss…..unless it’s a miss.
Beachcliff Sardines you’re dismissed.
Brilliant!
The Jeff Goldblum of the canned fish community.
I pop on your vid, I open a can of fish, I subtly headband to the background music
i love this music
WHAT AM I EVEN DOING HERE??? EARLY REVIEW GANG!
Love the Unsolved Mystery music. I half expected Robert Stack’s voice to come on and frighten me like when I was a child 🤣
I just discovered this channel and I love this.
Matthew with another banger, and the music in this one was just off the chain, especially the part from 2:29 to 3:09. really missing out on these vids if you're not watching with headphones.
Great music, I knew the Espanaler sauce was going to show up. I’d like to see you on a Portuguese sardine boat getting to the truth.
cutting edge investigative journalism WHO IS BEHIND THESE DINES
@@SteveTheDog115 yeah what’s the story with those deenz
Always love your inves-tin-gative reporting.

Oh how canned sardines
Taste fresh from the cool ocean
A simple delight
My third favorite canned fish youtuber
Putting organic on your box boosts sale price 50%. Of course fish are freaking organic, the oil can be organic and makes you wonder why they don't say sardines in organic e.v.o... of course it's to increase sales price. Last time I ate a non organic sardine, the attractant used on soft plastic lures made me vomit. Another great review! Canned fish lovers all salute and thank you.
Omg the unsolved mystery theme song made the video. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Matt - you are in the best position to capture and highlight the beautiful canned fished packaging art work. You should consider capturing it and making a canned fish poster of products. I am so interested in the packaging artwork myself - it's beautiful.
When I tell you I've been sinking HOURS into your channel at my desk at work and I can't tell you how many times my ear buds disconnect going to the next video so my phone blasts "WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING HERE?" ... my corporate life is complete.
Another canned fish conspiracy! First tiny tots and now this?
What am I doing here. Watching you Bro !
He could just go to Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick. to get on a sardine boat , the cannery there could probably even set him up with one and a tour of the cannery . Its in Canada so his dollar would go a lot further because of the exchange rate !
It's true it's not *that* far, either. (Well, tbh it's *pretty* far..Same side of the continent, though!)
Both looked good how ever I liked the look of deens and oil of the right side can
I love these twin-comparison vids. Saves the coins when you realize you can do one or the other instead of having to try both!
Matt-San you have ignited my love for canned fish in general and also my love for canned fish packaging. You should consider sending out autographed canned fish packaging. I am also doing some artwork at home with the beautiful packaging and would appreciated if you could send me your throw-a-ways. Let's capture the beauty of the packaging together - it's very interesting art. I am a big fish man fan fin.
Cant wait for the deenz mini doc!
Just had my first tin of King Oscar sardines because of this channel. I’ve eaten a lot of fish in my life but never tried canned sardines. I had some with saltines and it was pretty nice as a snack. Worst part is opening the tin and spraying oil everywhere and throwing away the tin and the trash smells like fish now.
You did a beautiful job!
What kind of special wizard gets TWO wands?! What are we even doing here? 😂
I love those chopsticks
Anyone else had a sardine phase and watched this guy last year alot haha. Ur videos are still great man
Sardines are a way of life. Trust me - Signed, Soupy Schitz
You need a olive oil tasting straw. Like the size of a coffee stir. You gotta really get in there!🤣 #SipUp
I started watching this when I was high at night. Now I'm watching it on my lunch break. You put out amazing videos. I was not expecting a twofer on this one!
Man the music on this channel is GOATED. Oh yeah, you're content is pretty top tin S tier too!~ Hypnotic style.
Dude you're the man brotha. Love your show and thank you for educating me on this shit and what we are even doing here. Love it.
I definitely care about EVOO quality, usually when you get olive oils packed in various regions or countries in one bottle it’s because it’s the leftovers. I’d imagine very few commercial products other than EVOO producers care about the quality of the oil they pack their food in though because the oil is rarely the main ingredient in their package it’s the Protein or the veg.
Plus people rarely eat much if any of the oil with the food, some even strain all the oil out. On top of that there's not a huge reason to care much with some foods like sardines since they're strongly flavored so high quality oil is going to end up tasting nearly identical to cheaper oil. You can often tell the difference between different oils like soy vs olive but rarely the difference between different grades
@@arthas640 Health wise the good stuff is better for you though. But you're right, especially if they cook the sardines in the can, thus, exposing the oil to moderate or high heat, it will significantly degrade in taste.
Matthew's gonna live forever pounding down all those omega 3s!! lol 😆
Now i got deens in my cupboard. Good show.
I wanna see these experts that can tell difference between organic and regular olive oil
The olive oil business is super shady, I still love it though.
The differences can be basically negligible. What matters most is processing. If you have ever had truly fresh pressed oil you would know the difference. It’s hard to find, things are getting better with more press dates on bottles but you want to get it within 3 months for peak freshness.
Theres a subscription called the fresh pressed oil club, I was a member for some years. Based on the region and type of olive there are light/ mild oils and VERY bold and VERY pungent oils.
Many of us who prefer to buy organic products don't do it because of any flavor differences, but because we care about what happens to the land, water, and workers exposed to pesticides.
favorite episode so far!
The unsolved mysteries theme sent me 😂
"Corporate needs you to find the difference between these two cans of sardines"
Very nice. Thank you.
/*accidentally pours out extra Espinaler*
.... ....
better not waste it.
/*opens another can*
Great video. Love these Dines
If you saw this you know. Show canned fish files some love
I'm guessing they come from the same cannery. They just put the cans in different packages.
I would patreon the fuck out of that trip! To Iberia with you!
I haven’t checked in in a while, I’m a bit ashamed to say so. Wanted to wish you a late happy birthday. I know mine was the 28th of may and from a couple years back you had told me yours was either the 26th or 27th? If I’m remembering correctly. Anyway. Happy late birthday. I see the channel has really grown. Im pretty sure it was only a couple thousand strong when I first subscribed a few years ago. Congratulations on that !
Happy birthday! Hope you've been doing ok. I had a nice low-key birthday. Check in whenever you like, the videos aren't going anywhere.
Thanks!
I’d need half a roll of paper towels to do his job. Currently I’ve eight different types of sardines and three of tuna. For the record: scrambled eggs and sardines are just good. I drain them a bit first (my dog’s coat is looking velvety) and sauté some shallots.
Enter the Canned Fish Files King of Sardine Splooge. Espinaler. Personally I'd ditch the sardine spoon because while we all need some splooge in our life, just a little goes a long way. A splooge right into the can is just right. And who knows what the next can of little sardines will be like. Maybe you'll find that one little sardine in the can that wears tiny glasses and it gets the splooge. Your fans will go crazy and love you for it! Then again. I'm crazy. That way. Mahalo!
Recently picked up a copy of "The Magic of Tinned Fish" by Chris McDade. Has some awesome recipes, techniques, and photographs involving all manner of canned ocean critters. Have you read it?
Not yet.
Just ordered it, muchograssyass!
That’s some top tier spine action.
Since I don't see anyone saying it, I think that was French or Portuguese on the can. Not Spanish! Keep up the great work! I cracked my first three cans in a single day because of this channel. My wife is very upset with you, as are my daughters!! 😂
Can you review California girls!
I love you video s keep posting more because to one fellow sardine lower to the other let's keep on Trucking
10 dollars a can is definitely rich people food.
Just took down a can of deens. This channel is changing my life for the better
You need to visit a cannery for a vid. Good stuff
You ought to be sponsored by that salsa espinaler
You should make a rate/taste test video where you don't know the brand and you reveal the best tasting brand at the end. That would be an interesting/fun video.
Matt, next time I visit new york we need to eat 6 cans of sardines together and then go rock climbing, like at Brooklyn Boulders or Vital if we're feeling extra.
I don't know if I'll go climbing but I can walk around the slope for a little bit.
The writing on the Maria can is Portuguese… 😂 not Spanish!
That music is hilarious
Have you seen that Jose Gourmet has a new brand coming out called Ati Manel? I'm excited to see how it stacks up.
Maria e Jose!
Should come up to Canada go to the brunswick sardine factory in New brunswick & do a tour, might even get lucky and go out on a boat with the fishers for the company also, do a whole documentary and we'll all watch while eating a can of Deenz
very dangerous but delicous. eating one king fisher garlic olive oil right now, its so soft and tasty.
8:11 Pro Move
So I got up the courage to try sardines (again) the other day after watching your 101 video. Delicious!
Do you know any brand that still uses the old school keyed, roll-up topped tins? I vaguely recall eating (sardines) with my parents in the 70’s.
I eat them with chopsticks now . Thanks !
Great, my entire life is a lie!
This is a tactic of creating new brands to trick sardinetubers into buying multiple cans from the same shadowy corporation. Classic big deen tactic.
"Wait they are the same small deenz?"
"Always have been"
will you do a review of portugal's famous ramirez sardines?
Yum! Do you have an online link to buy that hot sauce?
Rainbow tomato gardens has it and amazon too. Its called Espinaler.
Would you say this channel has increased or decreased your off camera consumption of canned fish (Matthew) I've wondered that since you now are making more content on pateron I feel like you would get a fancy can to treat yourself but feel bad not to eat it on camera..?
It ebbs and flows. Sometimes I'll skip a few days because I know I'm gonna eat five cans in a weekend. And as much as I love making the videos, eating a great can by myself is a real treat.
Cans identical fish look identical.
How about an 8 bar bass intro to your videos?
Deeply in love with him
matt you have so much audio gear and guitar pedals....can you show ussss
Ok this might be a super dumb question… but do the smaller sardines taste different from the bigger ones.
Have you tried Ortiz sardines in olive oil?
What's the name of that hot sauce? Always down to try some new sauce.
Matthew, that is Portuguese, not Spanish. ;)
You mean the Jose Gourmets?
@@CannedFishFiles Nah, the Maria's. The tin is written in Portuguese, English, French, and German but you confused Portuguese with Spanish. No worries, they are relatively close languages. Hehe. It's just that I'm Portuguese so I caught it easily.
@@gifrancis OHH yeah you're right! Ok, I think I can live with that. For a sec I thought I spaced on the country of origin of the fish. THANK YOU! I think releasing it early to you guys is a good idea!
@@CannedFishFiles Look, idk how you're going to take this but both the Marias and Jose Gourmet are PT sardines... Hehehe.
@@gifrancis ok, this is getting interesting--the box pic on Maria's site says "product of PT", but my box and the box on in Dan's pics say Spain!
A quick question for Matt, Dan at Rainbow Tomatoes, or indeed anyone on the channel: just how long can tinned sardines last in optimal conditions? That comment about having had the deenz for a year got me thinking about it.
most of the tins I have show an expiration date of about 2-3 years after the date I bought them, dunno if that helps you or not
@@Peodso That’s great, thanks. I never keep them long enough to worry about expiration dates.
I'm getting tins with 2026-27 expiration dates. Under optimal conditions most tins will still be safely edible long past their expiration date. "What are optimal conditions?" Is the next question.
Most sardines have a 5 year expiration from the date they are canned. However, that is simply what the FDA has decreed. Many connoisseurs believe sardines and many other fin fish get better in the tin with aging that goes much longer than that. I know Zingerman's had some limited edition tins they put their name on that were super old. I keep trying to age my own, but haven't been patient enough yet.
I’ve eaten canned foods beyond 7 years of expiration and all were fine. I think expiration dates on canned foods is a sales tactic.
the jose gourmets seem to have had just a tad bit more pizzaz.
What am I even doing here?
Just learned that sardines have very high arsenic
Folie a deen!
Who the hxll can afford 11.00 for a tin of sardines? I mean.. that's more than $33 a POUND for SARDINES!!
Inquiring minds want to know, how many cans of fish do you currently have? Unopened of course.
Breaking Bad season finale type music
My guess… Jose met this really beautiful girl named Maria! So he told her that she and her name should be famous! So he told her he would develop his best sardines ever (talk) and put her name on them!!! But he didn’t really develop anything new but put her name on some cans… I’m just wondering if it impressed her?! Lol
What is the healthiest sardine brand to buy? Like one with zero sodium
The ones with no flavour.
One had tails the other didnt no?
Do you think you have mercury poisoning?
I guess at $10 per tiny can, why don't I buy a steak?
I need to make contact somehow, dude. I'm UK based and publish a relevant magazine and am a huge fan of canned fish. Would love to exchange some deens sometime and have you do some words on them. Reddit?
Happy to talk about it, exingmatthewcarlson@gmail.com
