They still sound absolutely incredible and I fully support and welcome their new endeavors.
Id be lying though if I said I still wasnt partial to pre-FoG material. It was just so influential at that adolescent period--its just always hit different for me. Cannot get enough of the live performances. Thankful tech is getting so good musicians can really connect and exercise their own creative freedoms today.

It's sad that these guys never got the recognition they deserve for starting a revolution of new sound. I never heard any band quite like Zao when I was shown them back around 2001-ish
They go as far back as '93
I saw them live in '98, and it was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen. Ever!🤘🤘

Hardcore I think would be the proper term maybe. But yes, going all the way back to their church band hardcore days, literally pioneers in the genre. And I really don’t care what you call it. It’s just fucking phenomenal metal music and they have been going hard for a very long time.
I also hate all the terms to describe a band and what genre it fits into, if it’s heavy and hard and gets you doing private mosh pits in your living room with your kids, it’s fucking metal and that’s all that matters.

Saw them when I was 18. August Burns Red was brand new and opened the show. It went ABR, Spoken, Zao and Demon Hunter. A night I'll never forget

This was a fantastic find in 2024. Saw Zao numerous times back in late 90’s. Still sounds as tight as ever.
Dude they're super tight and just as raw. I gotta say, 2016s well intentioned virus is very possibly my favorite album from them. I haven't seen them since 02 or 03, having no idea who they were
wow. The ghost psalm was one of the first Zao songs I heard back in 2001. it's what introduced me into metal
Living Sacrifice was my introduction, but Zao & Training For Utopia where who made me stick with it.
Yeah I had a Zao and Training split CD...Training was an awesome band...but they were a Carbon Copy of Zao...and even Living stole some Zao stuff...and don't even get me started on EARLY EMBODYMENT...although I did like their "softer" stuff later
Zao always delivers a beastly performance. Dan’s monstrous vocals, Russ’ and Scott’s thunderous riffs, Jeff’s and Martin’s intense rhythm section, they’re like a beautiful machine. I’m looking forward for their live album. 🤘🏾

Hot dang! I don’t think I’ve ever seen them play this one live. This was one of first Zao songs I learned on guitar.
Didn't get a chance to finally see them until early 2000s with Misery Signals and Every Time I Die. About 1,000 of us scene kids showed up in the Queen City and it just went absolutely mental. One of the best shows I ever attended even after all these years! Who would have thought the mighty Zao would still sound this great and last this long?! Terribly terribly underappreciated!
Just bought a ticket to see these guys for the first time, live in ATL in July 🤘🏻. Been a fan for about 23 years and somehow have yet to catch them.

I love this arrangement. Such an awesome way to breathe new life into an already legendary song.
We play certain parts different every time we play it live. Especially the end. This one is pretty tame, there have been shows where it gets pretty out there. We treat the ending (and the drum break in the middle) as open ended and can go on as long or as different as we feel on any given night. There are a bunch of Deadheads in the band so, it's our moment to "create on the spot and see what happens" hoping to use that tool in writing new stuff

Man, really cool to see the "band" is still going. Zao was umong the line up for my first real show ever. 2000 solid state summer tour with luti-kriss and living sacrifice. Brings back some memories with my brother. 🤘🤘

I was wondering if this would ever drop, stoked! Was blown away when I streamed it 🤘🏻 Zao along with Converge was the first metalcore band I had ever heard in middle school which led to me to traditional HC and extreme metal. I discovered Zao through Christian rapper Dirt via a Cornerstone interview. I owe a lot to this band as a musician and person.
Dirt. Love that dude. Pretty sure both Dirt and Zao had tracks on our skate video we put out in like 98/99. Mission Skateboards.

I watched this at 1.75x speed. It was epic.
I remember an interview with Jesse back in 2001/2 saying you guys coulsnt even post or make a live album because the record lable was so tight on them owning the songs and being in control of them.. couldnt even post your own songs in the background of a video from thr bands page.. i think he said something weird like snowboarding.. thats at least how i remember it. So i was always wishing to see older classics done in a more natural live setting oitside of cellphone footage. Until thr church stream that was always just a pioedream.
I feel like i waited 20 yrs. I wonder if the band has always waited the oppertunity or just thr cards happened to land right when they did think it was a good idea. Eitherway this is great. Zao is such a legendary band, cult classics.. and deserved a live/ set list / best of release. It shows off the songs are able to be played live and not just studio magic , shows they "still got it" and brings a new way to enjoy older songs as well as some newer ones.
I remember ststing up all night to watch the church stream 2 times in a row after working a 12 hr shift.
As a ling time fan it is good to see Scott and Russ together and Marty has come a long way since Fear. I remember meeting him in NJ in 2004 when he was the van driver or something.. zao opened for God Forbid i think when Josh was filling in on vocals.
Glad to see Dan is still the voice of Zao even with the 2 breaks he took early and mid 2000s.
Now i say, Jeff is doing Jesse's parts justice! And he stands on his own talents and shines on the newer music while keeping a "zao feel". I remember him joking on the web he wasnt even the 3rd best drummer in thr band (dan and russ drum, and jesse was the og drummer). But Jeff is amazing and he has helped Zao to continue being Zao. I was sceptical many many years ago, but that was just fear of change.
Zao always has and will be an amazing band!
As a point of reference, At Zero was written with Russ on Drums.
