  • Ahead of the release of her upcoming movie Helicopter Eela, Kajol talks to Anupama Chopra about her evolution at the movies over the past 26 years. She throws light on how her character in Helicopter Eela is different from Tumhari Sulu, Bucket List and Mom. In the light of Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter - Suhana Khan’s Vogue cover backlash, she also expresses her maternal instincts on protecting her children from the limelight of the showbiz.

  • @kjkls
    @kjkls Před 5 lety +171

    For the first time, I felt, Anupama stopped being an interviewer somewhere in the middle of the interview and became a mother or a woman, trying to actually understand what Kajol was saying and mentally trying to apply that thought to herself. I mean, credit be given where it's due, Kajol really said a great thing about self love perhaps even without intending it. It was much deeper than just the beauty that you see. Or beauty in the most traditional sense of the word. Seeing Kajol finally at peace with herself and finding herself so pretty at over 45 Maybe even Anupama felt that epiphany that Kajol talked about. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

    I think Kajol was way prettier 20 years ago - she was unapologetically herself and that was so appealing apart from of course her gorgeous brown eyes, her bright smile, pretty face structure etc etc. Somewhere along the way she lost her originality and naturalness and bought in to society's dated concepts of beauty. It is a very Indian thing (yes, even today) to equate fair skin with beauty. I am surprised to hear this coming from Anupama that Kajol is more beautiful today.

    I just love how she’s so straight forward and always honest. it seemed like they were actually having a girl talk rather than an interview at the beginning when they were chatting about motherhood and anu felt connected to the topic. Also, what kajol said about self love and what being an actor means is so true. But I don’t quite agree with the comment @ 19:32 “you are way prettier now” like excuse me?? she looked astonishing with her beautiful caramel skin during baazigar, ddlj, kkhh, and U Me Aur Hum. Not to say she doesn’t look beautiful now. she looks as gorgeous as ever.. it’s just sad she went fairer, but whatever makes her happy I guess and that fact she feels more confident now is all that matters Right?!

    She made an interesting point when talking about working on We Are Family and rediscovering the process of acting. Even though the film was a dud, I strongly felt she did an excellent job there and moved beyond the mostly garden variety expressions she used in her previous films (with exceptions such as Dushman etc). Just watch the reham-o-karam song from that film and look at the complexity of emotions on her face! That's the kind of stuff she should be doing and that's the kind of stuff most Kajol fans expect from her!

      @Ashnesss Před 5 lety +3

      Kiwi lover I found that odd too. I'm sure kajol was considered beautiful by many at the time. If kajol did care about how she looked back then, I'm sure she would've made a point to look good on screen. She has stated in interviews that she didn't actually care how she looked back then. Here she's saying that she didn't think she was beautiful. If that's the case, I think she would've tried even harder to look good on screen. Her statement here doesn't make sense.
      Your face and body changes with time. She was young then and she didn't choose roles that were too glamorous. It's all perception and subjective. And I think that kajol is one actress who has always accepted herself for who is, that's why she did roles that were not glamorous and that's why even today she doesn't overdress. She has always seemed at peace with herself and the way she looks. Now she's not trying to look her best. Lack of effort when you're young doesn't mean that you don't think you look good. It just means that you're not trying to look your best. Maybe there's a sense of laziness too.
      Somebody out there will think kajol is beautiful. Other actresses from that time or even her own cousins may not look half as good as she does now. It's all subjective. And facial features change. Some peoples change drastically. We look better when we actively put in effort to look our BEST.

  • @DM-vb6oh
    @DM-vb6oh Před 5 lety +21

    I was a huge fan of kajol for embracing her skin tone, body type and just being herself without trying to fit-in and yet beautiful and charming on screen. She went through a whole insecure phase and resorted to skin lightening treatment!! to each their own! But certainly both the women feel the same about beauty (read - shallow) is definitely forthcoming. Wouldn't blame anupama alone here for that compliment. Kajol for once is less bratish and was interesting in this conversation. Although her tone and vehemence on each syllable is jarring!

  • @pranavamaheshwarisundhalam4062

    Kajol, you were a stunner back then too, with your dusky charm and appeal, it was much more "you" (that unibrow!) than having similar complexion or features as you say as others, which only ends up making all look the same.

    Kajol very smartly in her candid style got back to her with “even if you dont like the person sitting opposite you in an interview, you have to act professional.”

    I think kajol looked less pretty in her past just because she was not aware of making herself look beautiful and she was quite careless about fashion. She has just become a little bit fair now. That's the difference. Except this, her face, eyes, hair everything is naturally beautiful. The matter is same about other actresses too. Everyone looks better now than she used to look in her first few films. And i enjoyed the interview. Kajol ma'am is always very charming.

  • @ksowrya1
    @ksowrya1 Před 5 lety +78

    Lmao, Anupama, did you really think the backlash Vogue received for Suhana's cover was unwarranted that you felt the need to put into a question that makes it sound like it was unfair? You could have set the premise for the question by mentioning how the private pictures of star kids like that of Suhana & Navya are leaked by News portals online without their consent or the constant sexualisation of them.
    Also, it's wrong of you to say she's prettier now. She's definitely gotten fairer, did something to her skin to lighten it

    • @kjkls
      @kjkls Před 5 lety +5

      No. I disagree. Anupama didn't ask the question from that angle at all. She just asked how the parents feel when putting out their children for scrutiny. It had nothing to do with the N word you're getting at.

    • @prairiehorse6168
      @prairiehorse6168 Před 5 lety +2

      Yes, I wonder why nobody has the guts to ask Kajol what happened to her skin colour. It's shameful how many actresses have miraculously gotten fairer over the years.

    • @FilmCompanion
      @FilmCompanion  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Sowrya, I wasn’t commenting on whether it was fair or unfair. I was asking as a parent how do you feel about putting your kid into a hostile environment. I have no idea about skin lightening so would prefer not to comment on it.

    She contradicts herself "I do films I would want to watch" and then "I have done films I didn't believe in". And Rani is correct, box office does matter. No matter how great you are, people won't sign a non bankable star (in general) today.

      What I wrote there was only about movies and what she spoke in her interview with Anupama. It was pure logic and fact. What they do in their personal lives, flirt or romance is none of my business. They are actors and that's what matters, not their personal lives. #myopinion

      I think she was referring to the number of movies she signed after Udhaar ki Zindagi (1994). She has said in several interviews that after that movie, she was so emotionally drained that she almost quit. Then she signed small roles in several movies that didn't demand too much of her. Hence Hulchul, Gundaraj, Taaqat, Karan Arjun in 1995. Ironically, 1995 is also the year of DDLJ.
