What a contrast: Shogun and Rebel Moon reviews back to back.
One that honors Kurosawa in many ways, and another that desecrates!
talk about whiplash.
Yeah, sure, whatever you say, Joe. Funny how the movies Joe raved about is mediocre but the ones that Joe ignored gets good reviews.
I believe ‘Anjin’ was the word the Japanese used for ‘Pilot’ and not foreigner.
Yeah but the subs are off iirc and they say foreigner or barbarian.
Depending on the context and situation, the meaning differs. You have to understand that at that time , not many foreigners in Japan . Mostly Portuguese monks, Dutch sailors , Portuguese sailors. As Japanese they always categorize themselves and others. So, yes , Anjin means pilot when firstly mentioned , but then when others uses it in different context and situation, it means « that » foreigners or « that » barbarian.
There's actually two words they use to refer to John. "Anjin" is what shows up as "Pilot" in the subtitles while "Banjin" is what shows up as "Barbarian/Foreigner."
Though, I'm not Japanese so it's possible that maybe it's the same word sounding different because of the various accents in the show.
@@stefanaviousI'm Japanese and you are correct. They do refer to John both as banjin or by his given name Anjin. Banjin (barbarian) and Anjin (Pilot in Old Tongue) are phonetically very similar so it's natural to mishear one from another. By the way, foreigner is Gaijin, and Banjin only means barbaric.
@@meruk8682 Thanks for clearing it up, mate. Appreciate it.
They literally had a coach who specialized in body language and movement of the time to help the modern Japanese cast to connect to the Japanese of 1600. Hiroyuki Sanada is absolutely _fantastic_ as Yoshii Toranaga (aka Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which would control Japan until the Meiji Revolution). He dominates his scenes, even when he says nothing.
The costuming is amazing, and I thought it was funny how so many ended up walking around in rather heavy costumes. And I don't just mean those in armor! The women wore _at least_ five layered kimono, and frequently seven. And one poor woman had to wear ten to twelve layers! It's those layers that actually dictated how women walked. Believe me, you are _NOT_ taking even moderate steps wearing that.
The sets were incredible and looked, sounded, and 'felt' authentic.
One of the things that is mentioned in the behind-the-scenes videos that you can watch on CZcams is that the vast majority of the cast, and a good part of the crew, were Japanese. Not Japanese-American, but actors and actresses straight from Japan. I thought it was really cool that Sanada mentions how pleased he was that so many of his fellow Japanese actors finally got to work on a big and expensive Hollywood production. That experience is invaluable, and probably played a big role in enticing Japanese talent to audition.
And speaking of Sanada again, he was also a producer for the show. Several cast members mention how he would get dressed for a scene, do the scene and then immediate change to rush off to another scene being filmed as producer.
I think it’s also important that this is based in an excellent book by James Clavell who was inspired by the real life story of the English navigator Williams Adams. After Adams proved himself to be incredibly resourceful to Tokugawa Ieyasu, he was appointed as a diplomatic and trade advisor of Japan and became his personal advisor on all matters pertaining to the Western world.
He was even promoted to become Tokugawa Ieyasu's personal translator and became the first western Samurai.
The Japanese they speak is also period accurate. It's a very impressive production all round.
This is why I hope they release a Blu-ray with all the special features.
I didn't like Cosmo as Blacktorne to start with, but he's growing on me after 4 eps (waiting for the finale to so I can binge the rest).
I wasn't sure about Anna Sawai either, but I must give credit where it's due - she plays the Japanese woman of the time with consummate grace.
Sanada is epic as always, but I also really like Asano's character portrayal so far.
Sanada is also the most qualified martial artist of the actors on set and was frequently involved with helping them learn katana and naganata work
Finally, a show that doesn't waste Hiroyuki Sanada.
Couldn't agree more
Fun fact: shogun is Hiroyuki Sanada debut as a producer.
Exactly. This man commands just about any scene in any show he is in, has been underutilized for some dumb reason. First time seeing him (for me) was in Last Samurai and his role just stood out because of Sanada's portrayal, he gave it more heft than the script deserved...he was excellent and I am so glad to see him heading up Shogun. It was masterful.

Fuji stole my heart, Mariko stole my soul!
I am Japanese and I love Sengoku era(16-17 century) dramas. This show is one of the best with Hiroyuki Sanada's great acting. Maybe it is little bit hard for you guys(non Japanese people) to understand those names and historical background but still, it is a great show.
I speak English and Japanese too.
The culture of seppuku and many other things are difficult for foreigners to understand.
And, again, I think it is almost impossible to translate the old Japanese into English with its original nuances.
Japanese is a very beautiful language, though
It was the game Nioh that first intrigued me into Sengoku period. Even though the show is based on a book with fictional names, it is quite clear that it is based on actual history with 5 regents, one of which becomes the eventual shogun. There are some big parallels with real history. For example John Blackthorne (William Adams in real history) came to Japan on the ship Erasmus in book/tv show, but in reality William Adams came on the ship 'De Liefde' (The Love) which was not the original name of the ship, that was actually 'Erasmus' (Dutch philosopher).
The thing is that the show is very good at explaining any major moving parts even to people with 0 historical knowledge of the period.
I went into it with what i would call a cursory knowledge of Sengoku era Japan, although Shogun takes place a bit further on from where my knowledge ends. So i'm decently well situated, but need a few pointers that the show can seamlessly add to the script.
My mother who's watching with me has exactly 0 knowledge of japanese history other than the fact that Hiroshima and Nagasaki happened in WWII. So she has absolutely 0 clue about the culture or generally conflicts of the time period, but with cleverly written questions from Blackthorne she got to grips with the important parts of the show's background.
@@kayhappy613 Yeah except this was written in English by an Englishman. If anything, the Japanese is the problem in the series. :)

Can't wait for the finale on Tuesday. This show is awesome and definitely a must watch.
Episode 9 was an absolute masterclass in how to do the "strong" female character. Terrific series.
I’m so curious as to why you brought up “strong” female characters instead of just saying it was a fantastic character piece?
@@italianwaffle5592 Because modern movies and shows have lots of Mary Sues. Western ones at least anyway
@@1nightonekn1ght87 A ton of Gary Stu’s too. It’s a trope. Why is it just called a good realistic character if it’s a dude though?
@@italianwaffle5592 Well I wouldn't say Gary Stus are good or realistic either. You're not wrong to say whether a character is a good character without mentioning gender. I guess what I'm trying to say is It's just nice to see grounded characters like the ones in Shogun.
Blackthorne's a cunning seaman and a decent shot with his gun but he'd be no good in a swordfight against a trained swordsman. Meanwhile, Mariko can hold her own in a fight with her naginata but can do so much against multiple opponents.
Despite their flaws, they're cool believable characters.
Are you woke? Have you seriously gone wOkE, carl?
Anna Sawai who plays Mariko also starred in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and I haaaaaated her character on that show.
Just goes to show how a great actor can be brought low or elevated by the strength of the writing.
And directing.
After you watch all the episodes (because looks like slight spoilers for later episodes), watch the behind the scenes cause its amazing what went into everything and how much Hiroyuki Sanada did. He has to be one of the most misused/underrated actors in all of hollywood

Looking forward the finale. Show has been fantastic. But I don’t think we are going to see some grand epic battle so hopefully people don’t expect that. Maybe a battle montage if anything.
I hope we get at least a little bit. Sekigahara was the biggest battle ever fought on Japan - 160000 men
This NEEDS to be subtitled. The Japanese language for immersion is needed IMO.
I watched on disney plus snd it's subtitled
Yeah, I REALLY hate it when someone says they don't want to watch something because they have to read. People like that just watch stuff to turn off their brain.
After Blue Eyed Samurai, this was such a welcome show to break into. It gives me faith for a ghost of tsushima show or movie.
I think we got off easy in that (as I understand) the show is not run in Japanese and Portuguese, the latter being the language Blackthorne talks to most non-Japanese people in the book. Anjin just means pilot (as in the one piloting the ship). I read Clavell's book multiple times and still got something out of the 80's TV series with Richard Chamberlain, if just for the setting and a different look at the characters of Toranaga, Mariko, Yabu and Blackthorne.
The moment I saw that Hiroyuki Sanada was going to be in the series I had to watch it and I was not disappointed. He is doing amazing job and I'm hoping for Disney and Hulu to not fuble the series in the long run.

Shogun is actually Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Yoshii Toranaga) producer debut. And what an amazing start as a producer. Hopefully we see more of him producing in the near future because this is flawless.
13:55 Episode 1 is called Anjin which means pilot, not foreigner. Blackthorne is called this because he is a pilot. This is explained in the show. Not to be confused with Ajin. Don't kill my weeb heart.
I thought it was just a clever spin on a TV pilot.. and they called it anjin instead.

Fallout Is okay, but I think people have lowered their standards because of most being garbage. I definitely don't feel like it's anywhere near amazing, just good enough.
just watched the last episode...i have mixed feelings.
its well done, no question. characters all have their motivations, but it ends in exposition. thats right, the last episode is tell don't show.
also, it may be unsatisfying for some how the stories end. it is deeply "utilitarian" in nature, meaning ppl just serve a goal, like tools. so, mixed message.
even if you don't love the story or underlying message of it, the show is well done and acted, no question.
The book is intimidatingly big, but abso-freaking-lutely worth the effort. Read it! And I don't even read that much, TO BE FAIR
29:52 That "thwp" sound effect was ON POINT 😂
You guys should watch the old 80s TV show because its completely different due to the fact it is told totally from Blackthorn's PoV. Like same book and stuff, but it's so different because we just see everything through John's eyes.
Which is kind a better wait to do it cause the book's goal is basically to make you discover Japan and it's culture from the point of view of an occidental. By the end of the book, Blackthorne is Japanese and you feel like it when you close the book. I think the storyline that suffered the most in this new version is actually the Anjin part of the story. They changed so much stuff into it. All the Japanese part is way closer to the book (apart from the Ochiba taking control). But everything with the europeen (Blackthorne, The portugese, is less good in this series to me... Blackthorne and Rodriguez relationship especially).
@@jdpc9391 I'm not familiar with either the novel or the old adaptation, but this version is clearly more interested in laying out a complex political struggle for Japan, with Blackthorne being a bit of a wild card in Toranaga's hand.
It doesn't really immerse you in the culture as i imagine it would if it focused more on Blackthorne's perspective and experience, but it allows for a grander picture of feudal Japan to be painted.
@@Spike2276 Yeah, the focus in this one is the Japanese. The main character of this series is Toranaga, not Blackthorne. The fact that we see him in the second scene of the series shows that he's the focus of the series. In the book, It only appears as a character in the second part out of 5. The Story still revolves around him but always through the eyes of Blackthorne. The perfect representation of the book would be to have the Blackthrone story told as in the old show but all the Japanese parts from the five first episodes of this show. (Cause midway through the show start changing so much stuff. There is no Ochiba/Ishido marriage. Ochiba is a really super secondary character in the book and there is NO way that in feodal Japan a woman could "take" control of the politics of the land even if she's the leader's widow and the heir's mother. This is a change from the era we are living in right now. I sound like i don't like this new show but i do. It's not a 10/10 for me as a guy who read the book a least 5 times. It's my favorite novel ever... so I'm a bit hard to please and i know it lol.
@@jdpc9391 Yeah, Toranaga is certainly the star of this show. Blackthorne is often the perspective character, but he's clearly just seeing Toranaga's story.
As for changes, well, like i said, i wouldn't know. But as for the Ochiba plot it's not the most egregious thing ever, as she doesn't directly take power but instead holds hostage the regents. And what gives her power isn't the fact that she's the Tayko's widow, but rather the Tayko's mother. So there's a little more wiggle room there for an aggressive takeover, and it's not a story without precedent in medieval times (for Europe, at least. I'm almost 100% sure nothing like it ever happened in japan. But the concept isn't alien to a western audience).
With all of that said, i can see why you would be upset with changes such as bringing Toranaga into the spotlight at the cost of Blackthorne. But for someone with no previous knowledge, i do feel like the direction they took is more interesting for a TV series.
I watched it when it aired, loved it, that and Tenko.
This show is so good it actually got my mom to read japanese subtitles.
But honestly, Toranaga himself is the start of the show. He doesn't actually appear on screen as much as you think, but each time he is there his presence is given meaning, along with every word that comes out of the man's mouth. His view on the world and other people reminds me a lot of Askeladd from Vinland Saga, and if your show reminds me of Vinland Saga in any way then you're doing something very right.
I also love how Blackthorne's nature is what makes him stand out. He's a survivor, and unlike the honor-bound japanese who will die over the smallest cracks in their honor, Blackthorne values life, and not just his own life at that. He learns to respect the way that the japanese are so willing to sacrifice themselves at the altar of honor and loyalty, while at the same time having his own clashing view of "leave no man behind". He's kind of an asshole sometimes, but he's also a man of principle and that makes him likeable even at his absolute worst.
And to round out the praise for the main characters Mariko is the perfect balance of firm, feminine, strong willed, and conflicted. She's a logical thinker who's bound in a three way split between her loyalty, love, and religion, and it's a joy to watch her figure out her own self.
Another good show with subtitles Gomorrah my brother refused to watch it because of subtitles modern day Italian mafia old mafia meets young generation 6 seasons if I remember
Hulu does have a dubbed version (partially dubbed, they don't dub the scenes with English and Japanese translation going on) and there is also a visually impaired Audio track too.
I actually watched the original Shogun back in the 80's and it was, for its time, a pretty damn good show. Amazing production value for sure, and the quality was top notch.
Mariko is the best female character the last 5 years.
9th episode might be my favorite episode of television ever tbh
I think you are right!
Being portuguese, at first it bothered me to see the characters speaking english pretending to be speaking in portuguese, but i realise that otherwise the whole series would have subtitles and that probably would cut viewership in the USA. They made the right choice, this series deserves to be enjoyed by everyone
It's good, however as a book adaptation I'm torn. I actually started watching the show before I read the book, only started after episode 3, but finished the book around episode 7. The first 3-4 episodes follow the book rather well, but from then on it diverges more and more with each episode. :( Especially Blackthorne is missing A LOT of character development he has in the books.
I still enjoy it, but I also have issues with it. I wish they'd stuck to the book as they did in the beginning.
They do have it in english, under extras they have the Dubbed episodes.
One thing they did intentionally get wrong were the footwear. It was decided to be impractical to use the footwear of that time iirc.
I have the original 80's tv show on DVD right next to me. Its a classic. Waiting for the whole season to finish so i can marathon this!!! Glad to hear it's great!
I love the new show, Be the old one is closer to the book. It's my favorite book of all time and I will never have enough Shogun content but the old show is still the best book to TV adaptation. The new one is Gorgeous and the action scene is fucking good. There are Amazing Book to tv adaptations with the Japanese character, but for me, all the Blackthorne part of the story is a bit of a letdown for me. I'm not saying the new show is not good. I'm just so much of a fan of the book (read it 5 times) that I'm probably a difficult fan to please. Would be happy to have your thoughts on whether you prefer the new or old one after a watch.

Anjin means “pilot,” like the guy that commands a ship and crew. They called him by his job. That was actually pretty much common practice with non-nobility at the time in Japan.
Those documents (ship logs and Blackthorne's diary) from the ship that Mariko is to translate would be in English or Dutch not Portuguese, she only knows Portuguese ... did i miss something here ?
It's a little fudged. The book he used to actually navigate to Japan was stolen from a spanish sailor (who could feasibly be working for the portuguese and be keeping a portuguese log). But yeah, Blackthorne's own notes and records of his ship's travels (particularly any mention of piracy on his part) would most likely be in english, which no one other than him and his crew can speak.
That's the one detail that doesn't make sense, and Blackthorne's logs kind of get lumped with the book he stole from the spanish.
In the book, the character is referred to as Yabu, which may be easier to remember for your next series review.
Great review Gus and I really hope when you have nothing to do you could do a blue eyed samurai review
shogun, fallout, house of ninjas ... god damn, some really great shows lately
On HULU you can choose which version of Audio you want. You can do Orginal Japanese sub. Or English Dubbed. Plus other cool stuff.
I watch the original.
This show is so good at the end of the episode each week I'm basically tearing up like NO DON'T END! You guys already disagreed with this, but I think Fallout was similarly addictive, just an entirely different tone and approach of course but great in it's own way.
Ep 8 is gut wrenching, no pun.. 9 is soul shattering.. I hope 10 puts the bow on it.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano....
I'm so glad I'm watching this series. I'm on 7, about to finish. I love it!
Just happy a popular channel is finally reviewing this series. This show and 3 Body Problem definitely were overlooked by reviewers
Not remotely, there's a billion reviews of both all over CZcams.
I love how powerful firearms and canons look in this show. They aren’t used a lot but when they are man do they look intense. Especially a scene later in the show where a pistol is used quite a bit
It was truly refreshing to find a series like this.
Really glad to see you guys covering this show because it is some of the most excellent TV I've seen in a very long time. The performances top to bottom are amazing, top notch writing and gorgeous design and cinematography with incredible attention to detail and historical accuracy. Can't wait for the finale!
In the book, Sekigahara happens off screen. The epilogue is chilling though.
Has a real early 'when-it-was-good' Game of Thrones vibes about it - so good.
9:55 he is, they made him change/tone it down from what he originally wanted to do in the show lol, he was trying to be a lot more like Richard Chamberlain from the 80s series and the show runners didn't want that.
I was starting to think this review wasn't coming!
Yeah for real I haven't watched something that just simply felt Special. This show, this story, this feels special to me. I HIGHLY recommend it, and now I'm about to see if the stick the landing with the final episode.
I didn't read the books and I'm wandering about Blackthorn, is he portrayed like that in books? it feels like the writers of the show didn't give him much attention he doesn't do much (I'm referring to later episodes). it's my only complaint if any about the show but if it's this way in the books then I'm the one being mistaken.
No, the book went way deeper into his charactor, his past, his thoughts. He and Mariko had a very intense deep love which was centrical to the story. GREAT book and the series really did capture the essence of the story but of course, books are so much more in detailed.

i understand why a TV show can't go in too deep like a book but this felt like they didn't go into it enough. it's the only reason I can't give it a 10. for me this is 9/10.
I remember the days when joe first started doing non gaming videos and so many people didn't wanna give it a chance an complained about it but looking at it now I think it's impressive that he's got 258 videos in this one category keep up the great energy guys
Crazy that you guys reviewed this but not Blue Eye Samurai, that show deserves a review as well. It kind of deals with the aftermath of Europeans getting kicked out of Japan too.
Season finale today and no signs of a season two either. So sad, but great ride.
