Talked to a retired pilot... every time he started to miss flying, he would set his alarm for 0400. Get up, shower, shave, and put his uniform on. Then he went outside and stood by the curb for 15 minutes with his flight bag and suitcase. After that, he went inside and sat in a chair for 6 hours, looking out his picture window. He said the feeling went away after a short time. I never completed the first step.

When on a trip or sequence you get what is called Duty Rig or Trip Rigs. It's a negotiated contractual provision. You are GUARANTEED X amount of pay hours for the Y amount of time on duty. For example for every 3 hours on duty you are guaranteed 1 hour of pay time, 1 to 3. It's probably something like a 1 to 4 these days. Plus daily guarantee, plus trip guarantee and maybe other special provisions for international. It's what ever you can negotiate to protect crews while on the trip. Also forces the company to publish efficient trips. If they make you wait in airports all day without flying you still get paid something. Pay only when flying.
A small perdiem per hr away from base for food and daily costs. This is not pay. Hope this makes sense without getting into the weeds.

@Turbulence210 for me job security. Airlines tend to hire pilots until they furlough. You look at 9/11, 2008, and Covid. Pretty much every airline furloughed pilots. Cargo has been pretty safe. They tend to see problems in the market first before the airlines do and plan accordingly. Second is both FedEx and Ups offer a pension along with a company 401k Direct Contribution. I can't remember the extract amount, but if you put 30 years at Ups, your pension will be around 140k a year. Plus you still have your 401k from your company as well. Last not dealing with passengers. I show up, do my job, and then go straight to the hotel. There is no need to go through the terminal.

This reinforces what I was told a few years back: helicopter pilots talk about flying, fixed wing pilots talk about where they fly to 😂

If you want to do this, do it in Europe. No stupid 1,500 flight hours rule (making freshmen having to accept low wage jobs to get piloting experience to reach 1,500 hrs) - get to a reputable airline and apply there. If you pass all the tests and may begin training, you'll sit in the plane much faster.

@@PascalGienger Most European pilots have to do training in the US because US training is considered to be the best in the world. Calm down

Dont know how pilots and cabin crew do it. We just got home to Australia yesterday from 2 months in Europe. After 6 weeks i had enough of living out of a suitcase, catching planes and trains. Its exhausting lol

I’m a flt attendant and I’ve had about five trips similar to this pilots. When I’ve hade them, it’s like no other job. I’ve had my plane break down on a Caribbean island, just to go back to the all inclusive hotel to chill out another 24hrs.

Quick question, do you have a R-ATP or an ATP and to be a United captain which one do you need?

Cancellations are a double edged blade. You get a few more days away but the passengers aren’t too happy about it.
