I was cheering for Alonso this weekend with my dad, because we love F1, but we also love Indy500, so at the start of the race someone watching the race said: "Let's say Alonso doesn't win, who should then?" and with my dad we both said: "Sato"; because of this race. And then, the absolute madjap actually did it. So happy for him.
I thought the exact same thing that day! When Alonso was out I said boy it would be something else if Sato won today especially after that gutsy move he tried in 2012. I've always loved his style and his aggressiveness. He was never given enough credit for the talents that he had only for the crashes that he did. On the last 5 laps I couldn't believe it we were back in the same position. And then boom he gets in the lead at holds it! I'm going mad at this point holding my breath for every lap. Last lap comes and I'm freaking out. Hold it till the very end and I scream my fucking head off. Literally just like the way Sato did! Definitely one of the most if not most memorable race I've ever watched!
I just attended an event at the IMS Museum featuring Takuma Sato. He discussed this incident in detail. It's amazing the amount of calculation that the drivers do in seconds. The reason he didn't wait until turn 3 to make the move was the wind conditions.
Reminds me of when a friend told me in a talk with Hildebrand that in 2011 he basically had no choice but to try to pass Kimball because he wasn’t told Kimball wasn’t on the warm up lane. So when he got to him, he could brake on time or else Wheldon would’ve caught up to him anyways while trying to reaccelerate
kamikaze move, is always fun to see him race but I hope he can have better luck in the future, is very discouraging when see ppl like him ballz out doing things but not paid off, he is a good example.
Every time I watch this I find myself hoping Sato gets some brains and waits to make the move. Oh well. Was a great race. Sad Dario is no longer in the series. Was not a fan of the guy but it is always great for a sport when you have someone that some fans want to root against. He does seem like a great person and I hope he can stay involved with the sport.
Adam Moreira 1) Takuma had already pulled alongside before Dario forced him under the white line, and 2) it's the final lap of the biggest race in the world, so you obviously don't know at what moments in life you should be patient or impatient.
I live in cali and flew to indiana for my first time at the speedway and the indy500, it was freaking amazing... the best race i have ever seen ever. too bad sato didnt win, but was a hell of a race
I remember this was the first 500 I watched all the way start to finish and wow talk about a nail bitter all the way to the very last lap I wanted so bad for kanaan to win it but congrats to dario
Sato was 1 for 2 on passes at turn 1 during those last 2 laps. Unfortunately for him, Franchitti wasn't going to give him space and try for a re-pass in turns 3 or 4, or on the front straight on that last lap. If you watch lap 199 closely, Sato passed Dixon at almost the exact point in turn 1 that he lost control at while trying his pass of Franchitti. The only difference was the amount of space that Dixon gave him.
5 years later, congratulations Takuma Sato!!!

This hurts so much as a Sato fan, even if he won later on
he should have waited till Turn 3
@@AlonsoRules This year Newgarden passed on Turn 3 to win.
@@AlonsoRulesif he slowed himself down, he might’ve fallen back too far back to be able to pass him in turn 3. He saw a chance and he took it
This is why Sato deserved the 2017 win
Sato a winner again! Well deserved!
I was so bummed that Sato spun out. He would have won. I'm glad he got his 2017 victory.
aye I wish Sato had won. I was a fan of his during his f1 days
fluffynoses now he did this year for the 101st Indy 500
@@jackietang3789and then again 3 years after in 2020
Sato got his second too!
So glad Sato is now a 2 time winner
Honestly, he should be a 3 time winner.
Sato was inside of Franchitti going into turn 1 already....Sato was there Franchitti just squeezed him into the apron
One hell of a last win for Dario.
Sato just won in 2017 though!
And 2019!!!
@@HappyMrHyena 2020
5 years later and he gets that win!!
I had a party at my house for this one and we were all cheering so hard for Sato
GRentz00 i was pulling for him too...have to admire the go-for-broke move though...real racer
REDEMPTION IN 2017!!!
He waited over 1,500 days for it. Holy shit.

Another win for sato in 2020!
Nothing like driving open wheel, you can feel every vibration in the car, the wind lifting your helmet, truly takes balls and skill
NO ATTACK NO CHANCE
Nice☺️attack!sato!
Guees who has 2 wins in Indy 500
Sato - Indy 2017!
kamikaze move, is always fun to see him race but I hope he can have better luck in the future, is very discouraging when see ppl like him ballz out doing things but not paid off, he is a good example.
Ayyy
He got his sweet redemption
Who's here after Sato won 2020 again
Same team as well!!
If you were there at the race, you should have heard the ROAR of the crowd both when Kanaan was in the lead and when Sato was chasing down Dario....
Dario Franchitti won all 3 of his Indy 500's under caution
Nice to see Ashley Judd there as well!
"We know she can count to three. She just proved it."
Breaks my heart every time.
woow I dont watch this kind of racing but the finish was good. Just like the Penske team "one-two".
Every time I watch this I find myself hoping Sato gets some brains and waits to make the move. Oh well. Was a great race.

He does seem like a great person and I hope he can stay involved with the sport.
tikiman06 I think power has taken that role now as the "root against" guy
Nick B he was always that to me
Why was it so important they had to interview Ashley Judd?
Franchitti has had 3 lucky Indy 500 wins 2007-wasn't even a full race. 2010- Wheldon was about to pass and Conway had that horrendous accident
I wanted Sato to win. I told my buddy before the race started that I wanted him to win.
He wasn't my favorite but he was definitely up there! Hopefully he we stay and do commentary or something
Hoping for sato to win.
And now satos won the 500 twice
TAKUMA BANZAI!
Redemption!!!
Franchitti already had the line...I know most passes are made going into Turn 1, but you have to be patient.
Adam Moreira 1) Takuma had already pulled alongside before Dario forced him under the white line, and 2) it's the final lap of the biggest race in the world, so you obviously don't know at what moments in life you should be patient or impatient.
Now Sato is a 2-time winner
Is Dan Wheldon watching this?
I live in cali and flew to indiana for my first time at the speedway and the indy500, it was freaking amazing... the best race i have ever seen ever. too bad sato didnt win, but was a hell of a race
Congrats to Sato again in 2020.
"well, now we know she can count to three".... Hahahaaha
0:04 a "Me and da boiz" moment
I remember this was the first 500 I watched all the way start to finish and wow talk about a nail bitter all the way to the very last lap I wanted so bad for kanaan to win it but congrats to dario
Franchitti is so dirty. So glad karma got him back with his injury
TAKU would have won yesterday if not for a bad pit stop. He had second fastest times and was only .33 sec back/
And in this he flat took Sato out when Sato was about to pass. Once Franchitti wins one under green ill respect him.
Quit watching it, then. Shit changes.

i totally forgot kannan was leading at the start of this stint.
BONSAI!!!!!!!!!
Last win for Dario.
Because Sato ended Dario's career at the Houston Grand Prix in 2013
@Noonecanknow879 Umm yes I have. For racing on tracks which has got other turns then left. oval is boooring.
takuma is samurai!!
They need to do the Green White Checker like they do in NASCAR, everyone knows someone's gonna crash on the last lap.
Sato should have won.
yea your right. we need to tie one up mono y mono !
Textbook Sato, I'd bet a lot of money in some kind of crash.
I never liked Ashley though ;p
Sato has 2 and this still makes me mad 🙃
dario wins them under caution because that the only way he would win them
O look.. Another left turn
What's wrong with bigger drafting?
Jackie Stewart is like dario who? I don't know that guy..........
I was kidding i know who he is.
OK maybe you should take a class on that then. lol
TKS Takuma...
Hey Francheaty win one under green then you'll get my respect, until that day comes, none for you from me.
