Some complain that this chapter lacks the story advancement of others, however the quiet carries meaning. It lacks the periodic narration of other chapters because Madeline is isolating herself after feeling that she failed even at simply trying to help Oshiro. She's feeling as if she damages the things she touches regardless of her intent. She implies this in the sole conversation at the beginning of the chapter - she doesn't need anyone to do this. She's better off alone. Then Theo appears at the end. His presence in the gondola calms her as the weight of everything starts to suffocate her. She begins to realize maybe she doesn't need to go it alone. Then after helping her, in the next chapter Theo needs her. Pushing through the weight of her fears she devotes herself once more to saving someone - despite failing earlier, despite isolating. And this time, she succeeds.
Madeline couldn't help Oshiro, so she's literally pushing herself to her body's limit against the freezing wind in an act almost reminiscent of self-harm. There's a sense of frustration and self-hatred here.
This song conveys the sort of tranquility you might feel even in the harsh upper reaches of a mountainside, far isolated from the rest of the world. At the same time, the combination of long rumbling bass notes and arpeggios (?) conveys danger and majesty, as if to mirror Madeline's growing realization (perhaps respect?) that the mountain is capable of far more than she could have anticipated. This juxtaposition of tranquility and tension reminds me of Environmental Station Alpha, and I really like it here, too. Also, maybe it's just my experience playing the game, but I can hear the wind in this one, even when it's not actually blowing. I hope I'm not trying too hard to sound profound here. It's just that I've come to really enjoy the feeling of this track despite how long of a listen it is. I tend to be pickier about longer VGM tracks, but this OST is proving an exception to that.

I think this song and the lack of interaction with other people until the end of the chapter really made you reflect on what all has happened throughout the story, especially what just happened in chapter 3. One of my favorite tracks in the game.
You know, sometimes music makes simple things so.. pristine, I guess? Let me share a little story. I was walking around the city, listening to the music. This was honestly one of the most meaningful chapters and music pieces in the game to me, because everything was just so... quiet. Getting up from a failure like that, it feels empty, it feels like we can only rely on ourselves, and we donât even know why weâre trying, but we keep going. It feels like weâre going against the wind~ Hereâs a theory- nearly every obstacle we face on the Mountain, Madeline created and inflicted on herself. This level was gorgeous as is its music. I loved how the level and this track transitioned back and forth in the first two parts until towards the end when the intensity skyrockets and the music does the same. Loved the whole experience.
If im not mistaken, starting at 3:11, the slow notes that have played since the start of the song and the new fast part are in a 3:8 polyrhythm, and furthermore, the fast parts are playing a 5 note phrase repeatedly! Crazy, and effective.
terdragontra Have you listened to âRuinsâ and then âHotlandâ, âSpear of Justiceâ, or âWaterfallâ from Undertale? They do something similar with their motifs.
Fairly sure it's 3:4 poly, triplet eighths vs straight sixteenths, but yeah! It's extremely creative orchestration, selling that slightly off-kilter feel with music that's just kind of...flowing, in a free unrestrained way.
At 6:27, the drawn out bass sounds are my favorite part of the entire video. It has so much emotion in it, yet I don't know which emotion it is conveying...
I interpret it as the mountain itself telling Madeline not to underestimate its power. It's like the feeling of awe+powerlessness when you're faced with something so godly majestic.
@@dinowibisono99 Agreed, but for me it also gives the feeling of not giving up despite all the setbacks. It fills you with fear, but also with courage and determination.
Its pretty weird. The piano stays in its place, in its rythm thoughout the entire track, but more in the background, as the synth waves and bass and the other crap is in front. Seems like the piano could be interpreted as willpower?
When I first got to this stage, the first thought that came to my mind is "heaven". It's such a beautiful section of the game not just by 2D standards but video game art as a whole. It's truly incredible. However, at the same time when you get this sense of "heaven" and the soundtrack with it, the first time you encounter the wind, you begin to realize how amazing "heaven" is. You've only reached the entrance of "heaven" by climbing up this majesty called a mountain, and now you're seeing what heaven is all about. It's very easy to fall down.
I loved this level so much, it honestly surprised me. The wind created such a creative challenge, but really damn hard too. I think the music is really what kept me sane. Bashing my face into spikes, over and over and over again would normally piss me off to hell and back but, something about Celeste didnât make me mad. Hollow knight as fun as it is infuriated me at many times, but I was able to sit down and play Celeste for 2 and a half hours straight without getting frustrated at all, and Iâm sure the music is what helped me. The way it loops is beautiful to me, itâs long, similar but always changing, and the way it builds is incredible to me. It really helps emphasize the progress I make, and captures the mentality of Madeline beautifully. I sit down and listen through the whole soundtrack on loop while Iâm working, and Iâm extremely greatfull Itâs uploaded officially to CZcams
This theme feels somewhat reminiscent of "Northern Hemispheres" from Donkey Kong country. Slow to build up: almost serene at the start, then slowly turning into terrifyingly threatening. Throughout everything you hear empty heights with nothing but the cold to keep you company...
man i still tear up listening to this song. outrageously gorgeous. my pro tip, even tho it doesnât fit the game at all: listen to this song driving along on a beach at night or a sleepy small town at night. makes the perfect aesthetic. this song is so amazing it fits everything, really â€ïž
After stopping to listen to this song, I have a whole new appreciation for this song and the chapter it plays in. It's honestly just breath taking, you could say it - blew me away -.......I'll walk myself out...
When I first heard this, I had just beaten chapter 3 and I was still tense from that experience. I was expecting something even crazier, but to my surprise, it's the most calming part of the game I've experienced. Matched with this beautiful track. I was blown away. And I continue to be blown away. This game is one of the best experiences I've had. Challenging, but not impossible. And through that challenge, it's incredibly rewarding.
I'm so glad I found this soundtrack uploaded by the creator, as I ran out of free listens on bandcamp. This'll help hold me over until the vinyl comes out!
I like how each track tells a different aspect to the story and growth of Madeleine as she continues further into the mountain. It's like watching a ripple spreading outward and reaching beyond depths that aren't seen right away. There's nothing but a gap that separates Madeleine from her goal but she has to make the move to keep going or she'll be frozen forever. It's tense and suspenseful, but also bold and exciting! I love it! 8)
Not sure if this was intended, but at 6:28 there is an ascending pattern and descending pattern playing at the same time. I think this really fits the chapter as Madeline is fighting against the wind, both going in opposite directions
When I first played through Celeste, I actually felt a lot of sympathy for Madeline. I don't necessarily have depression, but I can sometimes get panic attacks and If I get mad at someone I end up lashing out at them even if they are trying to help. The soundtrack is amazing and actually helps to calm me down sometimes. I think this soundtrack is amazing and deserves all the praise it gets. EDIT: I'm trans now lol
There are many musical patern that repeat in many different sountracks accross the game. Well, there are some strong recurent motives, but also a lots of melodies in the background But I cannot point these one. I just feel, like, a sense of familiarity. It is really subtle. Leitmotives aren't uncommon. But it is often either too obvious, either too subtle. Here, the balance is perfect. But in some cases it doesn't seem to have been planned thourougly and consciously, more like a feeling that is conveyed along the whole sountrack Great job
No doubt my favorite chapter of the game, and my favorite track. They're the ones that remind me you're climbing a mountain, that best get across the FEELING of climbing a mountain. It's got this sense of wonder, calm, and this... careful, wound-up tension, all packed together. I don't know why, but it really speaks to me. The blowing wind and general atmosphere of the level probably contribute a whole lot. I feel like the B-Sides remix kind of lost those themes, even if it's a great track on its own. Wish we had more remixes of this piece, really.
This particular song is my favorite out of the main chapters. I love its subtle build-up, and how perfectly it fits the level. I love it so much. Thank you for all of the wonderful music you've made.
There's this hike in the LA area I love, Mount Baldy. I have this track on repeat whenever I'm climbing the ridge up to the top because it motivates me to not die to how fucking brutal that hike is.
this chapter feels like the only one in the video game (besides farewell) where you are truly alone, and the harshness of this level stems not from badeline chasing you or oshiro snapping, it comes from straight from Madeline. Golden ridge should really be a place to take a breather, beautiful clouds floating in the sky, crystal clear pools of water glimmering, and yet it is somber. Itâs only when Madeline meets up with Theo that sheâs ever able to calm down and experience joy in the entire chapter, even after having an absolutely awful panic attack
This will always be my favorite chapter. After Chapter 3 kicking my butt, the utter ambience and beauty of Chapter 4 whisked me away and showed me how much I had improved.
This game is such a masterpiece, and its soundtrack does not fall short of that in any section of the game. This soundtrack has been so important to me, emotionally, even before I played the game. Congrats to Lena, what a phenomenal composer
I love how in the beginning it's so calm then near the end it intensifies. This is my third favorite chapter because of design and music. Wind sucks but gets better when you practice.
Iâm convinced that this song is what anxiety would sound like. You keep trying to tell yourself everything is fine and that thereâs nothing to be afraid of, but you canât shake that feeling of dread. Itâs always there, in the back of your mind, telling you somethingâs wrong. This soundtrack is incredible.
7:15 I'VE BEEN PLAYING CELESTE FOR A LONG TIME BUT NOW THAT I OPENED IT AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE RECENT UPDATE... ...I HAVE FOUND... _. . . T H E _*_L I C C_*_ . . ._
This is easily one of my favorite chapters. Sure it doesn't have as much side content and less of a mini plot but this is where the game makes it or breaks it. It's where the game gets tougher. And it's about the main plot rather than, say, the side plot from the hotel. Its about climbing the mountain. And the music for it is impeccable
The only thing I dislike about this track is that in-game, the tam-tam swell doesn't line up as smoothly going into the final checkpoint as it does here, where it is destructively effective. Which IMO is a very minor issue. Great track for a great level.
I remember playing this level.. and the pain of my smaller fingers from the stupid subconscious logic of mine that says "the harder I press the right-arrow button, the more I resist against the wind current". But I really kept trying because the instrumental continually hit me to defy the nature of the mountain.
I like everything about this level accept the cloud mechanics. I felt that was too precise if you want (and sometimes need) to do the bigger jump. I was stuck on 1 specific part in particular because I couldnât get the timing. I got through it, at least.
Itâs like... bruh this song is so calming! And your happy this song helps you through this Chapter and soon you finish it.. Yay!!! You get on the lift and you realize just how high up you are... you slightly panic.. Naturally you think for the worst.. and it almost happens.. the lift stops dead in its tracks a chill goes through your spine... You realize... you canât breath you tell Theo and he jumps immediately into action he calms you.. just like the song before it Your calm now.. the lift starts to move again... You Will Climb This Mountain...
This chapter just feels isolated from the rest. It's so bright, but dark and lonely at the same time. Almost all the chapter silent, no dialogues at all. What is truly amazing about this is how each time the wind pushes you at an almost harming speed, you expect the next room to be the end, but it just continues until Theo finds you. That's when the torture both Madeline and the player are suffering stops. :,)
This level. . . I've hated it. It was one of the few that I genuinely didn't care, and thus didn't remember. When I went through the game a second time, I was baffled at how I've forgotten this level. Since then, I've realized how gorgeous this chapter is. The music is gorgeous, ambience is fantastic and the artwork is like a dreamland in a mountain. I've never felt so ashamed of myself for hating this level.
I wasn't a big fan of Golden Ridge until I reached the levels where the last rendition of this song played (starting at 6:26), and omg it immediately changed how I felt about it. Seeing Madeline struggle against the wind while this music played in the background made me determined to do everything to help her persevere, because I could actually feel the anguish and the desperation.

@@CurtisJensenGames Hotland isn't a song in Undertale's ost, but I get what you mean.
Fairly sure it's 3:4 poly, triplet eighths vs straight sixteenths, but yeah! It's extremely creative orchestration, selling that slightly off-kilter feel with music that's just kind of...flowing, in a free unrestrained way.
@@TheAdvertisement I think they mean Another Medium, the song that plays in Hotland, but yeah lol. One of my favorite tracks!
@@dinowibisono99 That's a great way to put it.
@@dinowibisono99 Agreed, but for me it also gives the feeling of not giving up despite all the setbacks. It fills you with fear, but also with courage and determination.

50% of the comments: Chapter 4 is the most annoying level due to wind.
Me and my friend: Is Chapter 3 and its stupid moving red crap a joke to you?
I kinda agree with Chapter 3 being the most annoying level, in my opinion the wind wasn't actually annoying to me.
IceWolf Studios they were both annoying to me
I have ~300 deaths in chapter 3 and 160 in chapter 4. Itâs really sad
Chapter 4 was fun, while chapter 3 was a pain in the ass
what about the feathers in core, and chapter 6
1:39 (piano) ; 3:12 (bass wails) ; 4:48 (synth + piano) ; 6:24 (neighbor tone piano arpeggios + bass wails + synth)
Its pretty weird. The piano stays in its place, in its rythm thoughout the entire track, but more in the background, as the synth waves and bass and the other crap is in front. Seems like the piano could be interpreted as willpower?
@@blacksmeim8791 im pretty sure i saw somewhere that the piano is supposed to represent madeline

The buildup and drop at 6:23 is so perfect I can't stop listening to it

TalanLysander omg Yes!!!!!
really does sound like being left on edge after arguing with someone. like what are they gonna be like tomorrow? are they still gonna be pissed?

man i still tear up listening to this song. outrageously gorgeous. my pro tip, even tho it doesnât fit the game at all: listen to this song driving along on a beach at night or a sleepy small town at night. makes the perfect aesthetic. this song is so amazing it fits everything, really â€ïž

@Scott Crabtree She's like Purple Haze. Fucking dangerous but goddamn breathtaking and deep
And through that challenge, it's incredibly rewarding.
i see what you did there
I'm so glad I found this soundtrack uploaded by the creator, as I ran out of free listens on bandcamp.
Its probably intended, Lena adds those things on purpose hidden in these songs
6:25
This part onwards is so fitting for the absurdly high-wind environments in-game
3:12 that fast arpeggio has the same notes as a part in the track Farewell, I'm almost positive. Well done Lena Raine you did it again
I still see myself struggling through the wind everytime I listen to this one
Amazing work !
EDIT: I'm trans now lol
you've been Celeste'd (but seriously, how is playing Celeste one of the best ways for people to figure out that they're trans like huh???)
There are many musical patern that repeat in many different sountracks accross the game. Well, there are some strong recurent motives, but also a lots of melodies in the background
But I cannot point these one. I just feel, like, a sense of familiarity. It is really subtle.
Leitmotives aren't uncommon. But it is often either too obvious, either too subtle.
Here, the balance is perfect. But in some cases it doesn't seem to have been planned thourougly and consciously, more like a feeling that is conveyed along the whole sountrack
Great job
I love this theme but don't like about there are not musical patterns or leitmotif
7:16 plays at a point in beyond the heart
gold
No doubt my favorite chapter of the game, and my favorite track. They're the ones that remind me you're climbing a mountain, that best get across the FEELING of climbing a mountain. It's got this sense of wonder, calm, and this... careful, wound-up tension, all packed together. I don't know why, but it really speaks to me. The blowing wind and general atmosphere of the level probably contribute a whole lot.
I feel like the B-Sides remix kind of lost those themes, even if it's a great track on its own. Wish we had more remixes of this piece, really.
3:12 -- such a nice and soothing polyrhythm of drum brushes and eerie rotating electronic arpeggio, reminds me Hyperballad of Biork
it's amazing how the music embeds the wind as a part of itself
This particular song is my favorite out of the main chapters. I love its subtle build-up, and how perfectly it fits the level. I love it so much. Thank you for all of the wonderful music you've made.
There's this hike in the LA area I love, Mount Baldy. I have this track on repeat whenever I'm climbing the ridge up to the top because it motivates me to not die to how fucking brutal that hike is.
i've spent at least 6 hours on the level with this soundtrack and didn't go mad. proves how good you're music is lena
Feels like you're high, high up, breathing in deep that cold mountain air..
this chapter feels like the only one in the video game (besides farewell) where you are truly alone, and the harshness of this level stems not from badeline chasing you or oshiro snapping, it comes from straight from Madeline.
You can actually feel wind in this level.
Just got my first keyboard recently, and this was the first song I learned on it.
Thank you, Lena, for the amazing soundtrack.

This is my favorite chapter of the bunch. The aesthetic is beautiful with the sunrise and pink rocks everywhere.
It also has the best soundtrack.
I know that this chapter and music have some heavy themes on closer inspection but this is the same person that made pigstep, HOW?!
the wind howling outside my house gives this song a new meaning to it (we had a couple tornadoes near here recently)
José Coixão i hope you, your family and your neighbors are okay
the most underrated track in the entire ost in my opinion
This is easily one of my favorite chapters. Sure it doesn't have as much side content and less of a mini plot but this is where the game makes it or breaks it. It's where the game gets tougher. And it's about the main plot rather than, say, the side plot from the hotel. Its about climbing the mountain. And the music for it is impeccable
I ran through blizzards with this particular track. What fascinates me is that the winds seemed to become stronger with the piece at some point.
Farewell is like another story in itself, that's why it's so long and difficult.
Your piano's are on another level. Amazing work
The only thing I dislike about this track is that in-game, the tam-tam swell doesn't line up as smoothly going into the final checkpoint as it does here, where it is destructively effective. Which IMO is a very minor issue. Great track for a great level.
âWe should look out for-â
Fail happens
*âTHE WIND!â*
I remember playing this level.. and the pain of my smaller fingers from the stupid subconscious logic of mine that says "the harder I press the right-arrow button, the more I resist against the wind current". But I really kept trying because the instrumental continually hit me to defy the nature of the mountain.
This chapter is *beautiful.* Both the art and the music are breathtaking.
the soundtrack in this game is so good man
I personally loved this level
this song at the start is spookier than anything in the haunted hotel, the message it gets across seeps right into your bones
I like everything about this level accept the cloud mechanics. I felt that was too precise if you want (and sometimes need) to do the bigger jump. I was stuck on 1 specific part in particular because I couldnât get the timing. I got through it, at least.
Protip: Time it with the audio cue. It's a lot later than you think it is.
Alex Does Things thatâs the point it was supposed to be difficult
Jump when the cloud is at its highest, not its lowest.
You have to jump when the cloud is moving up. The window is fairly big, but maybe you're just jumping too early
This chapter is just such a bless it makes you reflect on the story so far
Itâs like... bruh this song is so calming! And your happy this song helps you through this Chapter and soon you finish it.. Yay!!! You get on the lift and you realize just how high up you are... you slightly panic.. Naturally you think for the worst.. and it almost happens.. the lift stops dead in its tracks a chill goes through your spine... You realize... you canât breath you tell Theo and he jumps immediately into action he calms you.. just like the song before it Your calm now.. the lift starts to move again... You Will Climb This Mountain...
You could say that this music is, pure "Golden"
this track is so beautifull
This was the part of the game when I realized the true potential of what it has in store for me
This chapter just feels isolated from the rest.
:,)
Got the whole playlist saved so I can listen to it while Iâm doing school from home!
Why can I *feel* the wind in this song?
Start of 6:24 and onwards blew me away, my god this soundtrack is amazing
I'm really surprised my right key hasn't stopped working after this level because of how much I held it
This level. . I've never felt so ashamed of myself for hating this level.
one of the most underrated songs on this soundtrack (or at least it just feels that way to me because I love this so much)
I wasn't a big fan of Golden Ridge until I reached the levels where the last rendition of this song played (starting at 6:26), and omg it immediately changed how I felt about it. Seeing Madeline struggle against the wind while this music played in the background made me determined to do everything to help her persevere, because I could actually feel the anguish and the desperation.
