    I feel like it’s worth talking about how the monsters in this section are made _specifically_ as mirrors (pun unintended) of Madeline’s moveset. They are genuinely just the player’s set of mechanics in enemy form; the dashing, the color scheme, the segment where you actually control one. Hell, they even have the same death animation as you in the precious few rooms where you can kill them. Since the temple generates its horrors from the minds of those who enter, it can be reasonably inferred that this is just part of how Madeline sees herself. This is just part of her internalized image of who she is. Textbook self-destruction.

      another thing to note is that the statues of the monsters don't look newly built, they look like they were made ages ago, which is odd. maybe it's trying to say that everyone's inner demons look the same? or maybe the statues just look different to everyone who sees them, and Madeline seems them like that. maybe they never existed.

    People say that Anxiety is a track that sounds just like an anxiety attack. But, to me, this one is the one that really sounds like anxiety. The beginning with the almost discordant synths and the erratic and booming drums that come together into a cacophany of threads that make it hard to follow, looping over and over, while the synth gets just higher, and higher, and higher. Like the voice that wants to scream, but can't. Yet, there's something cathartic in the progression of the track as a whole, as you work through it, and reflect upon what you're experiencing.
    It's cyclical. It comes back, in the end. It's never something you fully work through--you just learn how to cope with it.

    • @Gardengap
      @Gardengap Pƙed rokem +10

      yes. with the many different discordant synths, the pounding drums, the high volume, it makes your blood pressure really rise. it felt like a crowd of people screaming at you at once, and something has to break. 0:00-2:20, that is.

      Anxiety and this were also my top 2 for eerie or discomforting tracks in the game.
      Anxiety does its job of feeling very panicked and scared..
      This.. just feels awful, but in the best way possible. It feels gross, claustrophobic, scary, etc.. And that's what it's meant to do, and.. that's probably part of what makes it so satisfying.

      Simonsaysgaming the panic attack scene is my favorite, just the sudden darkness and intense atmosphere was jawdropping. This has to be my favorite though, the whole thing feels like it’s leading to a sort of upbeat track but it just... doesn’t. It feels hollow and hopeless, which is exactly what it’s meant to make you feel. Anxiety is a more panicked and intense track, it’s meant to take you by surprise, but in that scene you aren’t alone like the beginning of this track, so it seems to have a bit less of a hopeless tone (or it at least drops off in Anxiety before the end)

    Through the mirror temple, the whole place is pinned on using a person’s anxiety to test their strength to advance to the summit.
    It’s obvious that madaline’s anxiety is about herself. Even before she reached the temple, she was being pitted against herself. Against a version of herself that she hates. And because she hates herself, the temple acts to hurt her, not because it’s doing so of it’s own intention, but because that’s what madaline is trying to do, she’s trying to fight herself. And it becomes clear that the temple is not just centering around her the whole time once she gets to theo. The temple is also using his anxiety against him as well, with eyes constantly staring at him and being trapped inside a crystal barrier. Theo’s anxiety is a social anxiety, he is uncomfortable being watched and feels trapped when being surrounded by strangers.
    It’s also why he takes photos for his social media account. He still wants attention, but is unable to be in public to do it.
    It’s... something i understand all too well.

The entire temple was one big nightmare, what with the difficulty, music that oozes of negative thoughts and emotions, as well as the way that poor Madeline felt throughout the chapter, as well as the whole game up to that point, this level, while not as frustrating as say the wind in chapter 4, is definitely the chapter I least want to go back to, in a good way though. Making you control the monster, letting it overcome all the obstarcles to get to Madeline and attack her was one of the most genial elements in the game. They further displayed Madeline's anxiety, presenting a breaking point, some sort of climax of the built-up tension. (Theo lost, temple growing darker, moster statues... i immedeately suspected they will mean trouble.) It also enhanced the player's anxiety, by forcing you to do something highly uncomfortable - you're supposed to attack the heroine you've learned to love, bring her deepest fears to her and [kill] her.
      Did you notice the poor girl tries to run when you're closing in?
      And while all of this you learned how these monsters work. They explained gameplay element to you the most disturbing way possible.
      After finishing this level, i couldn't sleep for like 2 nights.

    I think the most compelling thing about the theme of depression in this theme is not just the reversed Mirror temple theme in 4:46, but when it gradually transitions to the piano actually playing the new backwards melody in 6:34. It's not an exact reiteration of the reversed melody, but you can feel the beautiful yet anguished melody trying to push through the blaring synths and violent drums. Almost like how people with depression sometimes feel like they have to push through a new normal that has been forged (or in this case, reversed) for them. Nothing is the same as it was before, like how the new melody is not the same as the old reversed melody. It's...hauntingly beautiful.

    Quiet and Falling gives you a feeling like you've lost all hope and you sink deeper into the darkness and sorrow, with no way out, with no one to help you.
    Into the mirror's gives you a feeling of threat and danger, but slowly gived you a feeling that there is still hope, and that someone helps you get out of that sorrow and darkness that you initially sunk into.
    Honestly, both these two songs represent a mirror not only because one is the reversed version of the other, but also because both have opposite feelings that are present in one character: one feeling of being dragged down, and another one of being pulled up.

    This area was just... *shivers
    It’s like the True Lab in Undertale. Cool, but unexpected and scary as hell. Suddenly there’s enemies, eerie music, tentacles all over the place. You’re literally living your worst nightmares. But the creepiest part is the backwards talking, and the message it’s sending. The mountain/mirror is taking what Madeline hates most and is using them against her, but the scariest things to her aren’t the stuff that’s being used against her. The scariest thing is that fact that it came from Madeline. She’s literally scaring herself. That’s what anxiety is, and it’s been given a form. The mountain/mirror knows that.
    I’m just glad Theo’s here to keep us company.

      Peref L. I thinks it’s more of like it represents her own anxiety attacking her, like I said in the comment. Madeline doesn’t hate herself, she just doesn’t like that her own body actively works to scare her. The enemies are so hostile because they are her own anxieties.

    • @TheAdvertisement
      @TheAdvertisement Pƙed 5 lety +5

      Peref L. Oh I know this is speculation, I was just curious. I agree with you on most parts, but the thing is I feel as if almost Madeline doesn’t think Badeline is the same as her at first. This is supported by the Badeline interaction right before she drags you to the bottom of the mountain. Madeline views Badeline and her anxiety as this horrid part of her that’s always trying to drag her down. She’s doesn’t realize it’s an important part of her, and is always trying to push that part away, to fun from it. Madeline’s biggest fear is when it fully catches up, when this “creature” starts scaring her. She doesn’t realize she’s scaring herself.

    With CZcams and the internet in general being such a big thing, getting games spoiled for me is a common occurrence. A lot of the times, I buy a game after seeing footage of something really epic that happens at some point in the game (Epic moment, final boss fight, an amazing song, you get the idea). Going into games blind is something I haven’t gotten to truly experience since I was a little kid, playing Paper Mario on his GameCube. Recently, I’ve been picking up new game series on a whim and giving them a whirl, trying to expand my horizons. I picked up Baldur’s Gate (friggin’ AMAZING), and when that was all said and done, Celeste.
    Hit diggity DAFFODILS was this game a whirl. It’s been a long time since a game actually unnerved me (too proud to say scared). Everything about this area just felt... wrong. The warped music, the reversed lyrics, and the daMN BODY HORROR MONSTERS AAAAUUUGH!! Never have I felt so relieved to finish... no... escape a level.

    Eyeball monsters are immortal and hunt you down until they literally can't keep chasing you, most sections are rushed with few safe places to stand on, and even your friend is trapped with you, unable to do anything because of his own problems. Fun fact there is a hidden message when the whispering comes on in reverse. Edit the real song also comes on in reverse.

      Oh yeah I get a lot of 2049 vibes from this. It reminds of the part where K is looking through the orphanage looking for the toy

    In my opinion, Chapter 5 Mirror Temple is the darkest chapter of the entire game.

    The elements at 7:17 are so interesting, i can hear and not unhear the old melody in reverse, yet the questioning synth remains, and the drums come in to provide a moment of clarity on ryhthm which fade out. Some things you do are just tropes of this musical ear, ostinatos, electrical instruments ect yet you do them so well.
