No way, but just read some articles, Mitsubishi sales are up +20% in the North American market share. Its surprising I know, but alot of that is due to the success of the Mirage! They've sold many more units than projected. Its a damn fine lil no frills A to B car. And when gas gets back to $4 a gallon you'll be seeing alot more on the road, rest assured.

    Me and my friend used to drive around in an old Mitsubishi Pajero with a V6 3000 from the 1980's, passed on by his dad, possibly one of the strongest most dependable vehicles ever made, we abused that thing so much, driving in salt water and by the shorelines running over huge boulders, it still runs and drives to this day without a single engine rebuild, got the original tranny in it, it shifts so quick and smooth, the car then got shipped up to Spitsbergen / Svalbard Norway where it lives to this day and still runs strong after passing 700K km on the odometer, such a great example of a perfect beater car, i mean the windows were held in place by pieces of wood and the bumpers where held by ropes, but mechanically this car is sound, there isn't any rust on the subframe either, it does have fungus around the seals on all the windows so it's seen it's use.

      Here in America the Pajeros were called Montero Sports for many years until they weren't sold here anymore... tariff costs. They are still going well everywhere else. If Mitsu reintroduced them I would buy another. Still use our 2001 daily. Other than the normal wear, 3 oil seals, 2 sensors and a door switch in 18 years.

      Yup the 6g72 is awesome. I have a shogun sport which has 90,000 miles. It was going to be scrapped but I got it for dirt cheap, it’s only used off road now. I’ve abused it. I’ve overheated the engine many times, blowing the radiator 3 times. And seizing it twice. And it just cools down then keeps on going. Outstanding engine. Only problem is the lifters, I’ve been told the oil passageway isn’t big enough and it takes a while to get oil circulation. But I’ve never heard of it actually causing trouble

    I have owned 2 Mitsubishi Lancers and have to say that of all the cars I have owned in 35 years of driving, they were my favourites. Reliable, easy to maintain and fun to drive. Both were auto transmissions and one did 375,000 without any transmission issues and the other did 280,000km. Would have done more if it were not written off. Regular maintenance was the key and they were easy boxes to drain, replace fluid and filters on. I also fitted an aftermarket fluid radiator on the second one, to help keep the temperature down and I have no doubt that contributed to the lack of issues experienced.
    I have a Honda now and would trade it for a Lancer anyday.

      Mitsubishi has been using JATCO CVT transmissions since the early 2000s and they've had no where the same amount of issues as Nissan has. Programming, low curb weight, low torque, low hp, better OEM CVT fluid, all contribute to having more reliability. Suzuki also fairs well in comparison vs Nissan.

The magna has only every broken down after the heater lines corroded through 2 years ago @ 13 years old, so had to bypass it. Other than that, it's never died. The Land Rover is 10x more reliable than people believe, although seeing as it's a 4x4 used for 4x4ing, it requires more maintenance.

      Both the 3100 and the 3800 engines available in that year were often built with plastic upper and lower intake manifolds which tended to fail. If these are replaced with metal gaskets, the engines will run a good long time. The transmissions aren't bad if you don't abuse them. I had a '99 Oldsmobile Intrigue (same car aside from some cosmetics) with the 3800 engine that finally died at 238,000. What failed? The intake manifold gaskets. Car was too rotted out to bother fixing, or I'd probably still be driving it. I bought it with just under 28k, so I definitely got my money's worth out of her.
      Also, on a more minor note, the speakers GM used during those years failed all the time, but who wouldn't want to put better speakers in anyway? LOL

    I enjoy your videos I find them short, to the point and loaded with helpful information! Just a quick question regarding the segment about the timing belt. I'm a bit confused, I was always told if the belt snaps there is a very good chance that you could wreck your engine, as it makes the engine all work out of sync and that it pretty much eats itself. So I was under the impression if it goes whilst driving you're screwed and probably need new engine, am I wrong or can you or the audience shed more light on this? Thanks. I'm a viewer in Ireland. Still have not make any oil change on it and they still run pretty good no noise no issues . pretty extremely reliable car also. I would say if ur a Person who care less about Sport like Usually lady's do , then go for it all the way Automatic... in can last for a very very long time and its pretty decent price. but if ur a dude and because of the Car look so sporty you feel like you want to hit the gass hard... then Go for Manual transmission... and if ur wealthy enough.. then just go buy The EVOLUTION and have lots of fun !

    In 40+ yrs of workshop never saw a broken or faulty transmission in anything that wasn't from overly hard use,lack of strict maintenance,coolant leak into internal cooler, or very slow stop start use..... although there have been a few recalls across all manufacturers we have seen, flagship and exotic cars certainly not exempt. Mitsubishi amongst others design and manufacture great cars until the bean counter becomes involved and cheaper out sourced components fail prematurely. Love your channel Scotty! @@senorbonbon depends on your market and what country you are from. In my market here in the UK 10k for something with that mileage sounds like rather a lot. But yes they are reliable cars if manual transmission and if maintained well, my dad had a Carisma for 11 years which is essentially the same as a lancer and he covered around 90k miles miles in it after buying used with 40k on the clock , had to spend very little on repairs, just an 02 sensor and basic maintenance like tires and pads and was still driving perfectly well when he got rid of it.

Though some companies actually did display OBDII codes in the odometer, my 2003 Town and country does that when you turn the key from off to accessory 3 times. I still don't understand why no one else does this, it is extremely helpful to be able to pull off the road and see what the code is so I can decide if driving home will damage anything or not.

      I know but I am complaining about it. The "stereo" in my 2011 truck has a big touch screen, an 8 gigabyte hard drive for music, navigation, a CD/DVD drive, blue tooth, voice recognition, satellite, back up camera, back up beeping, etc. It's a full blown computer all by itself, with big speakers attached. Why can't it do codes? The screen is big enough that it should be able to do the graphs and stuff that Scotty's more expensive scan tool does. It would be mostly software. But yet it does no such thing. Heck there is probably enough hardware already located in this so called "stereo" that it could operate as a full blown home computer if they added the right software, but they don't. It even has a USB port so you could plug in your keyboard and mouse, or use blue tooth if you wanted to go that way. It's ridiculous that they try and make it look like it's just a stereo and you have to go to a mechanic or buy a separate scan tool (which is just a computer) to read codes. In fact, the computer in my stereo is so powerful it shouldn't even give codes, it would take just a few kilobytes to tell you the problem in your chosen language. "Misfire in cylinder 1" takes up less than a single text string. In fact, if it's connected to the internet through your cell phone, it would be plenty easy for it to also show you tutorials on how to fix it right on it's own screen, prompted by the code.
      That "stereo" in my truck is a full blown computer. There is no reason it shouldn't be able to do codes, describe the problem in English (or any chosen language), and show videos on how to fix it. All it would need is a wifi connection for the videos and some of them have that already too, but you could hotspot your phone or connect to your home wifi if not.

      @Nonplused Před 6 lety

      I'm thinking outside the box. My "stereo" is at least as much of a computer, probably much more so, that a scan tool. It's just not connected to the ECU. That would take no more than a small cable.

      Just my two cents' worth... Some newer cars, the radio is on the same CANBUS as all the other computer subsystems, so some simple tweaking in software/firmware could most likely achieve this. It is my belief that this is not implemented either because a) not enough customer demand, or b) want you to go to your dealer for diagnosis. I'm leaning more towards "B," but maybe I'm just a cynic.

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused Před 6 lety

      DashCamAndy I agree with your cynical conclusion. A car that knows what's wrong with it should be able to tell you what's wrong with it.

    I've had a 2003 mitsubishi eclipse 5sp for 13 years and I've had to replaced the spark plugs, cables, sway bar links, struts all around, head light housings, brakes twice all around, 2 sets of tires, 1 oxygen sensor, valve cover gaskets, since I bought it in 2005. It's got 114000 miles. I didn't drive it in winter much. over all its been a good car.

Changed water pump timing belts every 100000 miles, changed few other parts but engine transmission no problems.. also changed engine oil n transmission fluid as required. Drove gentle always no hard accelerations

      Nope all Chrysler transmissions come from the plants over in kokomo, Indiana. The transmissions in the HD trucks like aisin transmissions are obviously not made in kokomo but where ever aisin has their factories.

    I have a 2008 Lancer VRX with manual transmission that I bought second hand, 210k kms on it now. In the 12 years I've had it it's only had a problem starting up once. Other than that no issues except for the paint peeling which is just aesthetic. It's a damn good car and extremely reliable, I love it!

      Man from Nantucket GT. Everything I've read and seen, Mitsubishi engines last forever. My parents had a 1985 Dodge Caravan with a Mitsubishi engine. It got 280k miles and lasted until 2008. My neighbor has a standard trans 2003 Spyder with about 85k miles (senior citizen) and not a trouble ever. I see tons of the 3G's on the road. Over 15 years old and they are still ticking. I respect Scotty, but disagree on this one.

    my dad bought a used mitsubishi space wagon and it lasted him for 10 years without any major problems, personal experience is that the car is really reliable but only as a manual as scotty mentioned in the video. it's also the perfect first car to buy because they cost like nothing used! And most models get really good gas mileage as well.

    Scotty,
    I purchased a used and lightly modified Mitsubishi Evolution 10 MR back in February. I'd like to modify the car further with the help of a tuner in my local area, but I have concerns about the automatic SST transmission's reliability over time. Should I price check swapping for the 5 speed transmission (which would require adding a clutch system) or would I be better off just trying to trade for the manual transmission GSR model instead?

    I personally love old Mitsus. Hell I daily a 98 Eclipse GSX and own a 90 Eclipse GSX project. My first car was an 02 Lancer (120hp of glory!) and that little bastard was damn near impossible to break. It survived clueless teenage me just fine. After I put 77k on it I sold it with 234k on the odo. That car had my favorite 5-speed still to this day. Those old 4G engines are easy to work on and suprisingly interchangeable. After how much time I've spent with Mitsu I disagree they made some good stuff. Their modern cars however, are hopeless

      If only you knew the struggle of working on 3000gt vr-4s 🤦🏽‍♂️ they were the fastest car mitsubishi ever put out with 320 hp and 0-60 in 4.7-4.9 seconds and always pulled against evos cause of their much longer gear ratios. But even tho the 4g63 engine is a lot more reliable than the 6g72 engine in the vr-4 the 6g72 V6 does make more torque than a 4 cylinder engine like the 4g63.
