    I've been with brake squeaking for 5 months on my Cb600f Hornet, tried everything to fix It, caliper cleaning, brake fluid and lubed the moving PIN, then i did this and fixed the squeak problem 100%, thanks very much!

    Your'e the Man. Honda Hornet 2006 with progressively squeaking front brakes. Took them apart yesterday, cleaned them up, scuffed the pads with light sand paper, greased the pin and applied a thin edge of silicon grease to the outer pad surfaces. Hell that made them worse.
    Saw your post. The Honda bobbins are quite narrow, so I eliminated the nut and bolt squeeze and just sprayed brake cleaner into both sides of the described gap........ tah dah!1 quiet as a mouse. thanks.

    Excellent advice- it worked great! I found a way to speed things up by tapping a wooden dowel into the holes instead of the nut & bolt. Easy to pull out with pliers and no damage to the metal.

    Going through an 04 gixxer I bought for next to nothing . The motor / trans are solid. Replacing the chain and just making sure this is road worthy before getting too far on the road. The front pads seem good at least as far as pad thickness and no signs of rotor grooves go, but the calipers are black with debris which could be leaking or previous leakage, the fluid is topped off and appears clean in the reservoir and nothing is wet on or around the calipers. I know this hasn't been ridden in over 2-3 years, so 2 questions;
    #1 What can I clean this black crap off of the calipers with?
    #2 If you were tasked with cleaning the wheels (rims) on a bike that sat out in the harsh winter/summer midwest elements for years would you recommend hand polishing or using something more efficient like an electric/air polishing tool? (Ideally I would prefer pulling the wheels apart and having them blasted and powder coated but rather not spend any more than needed on a bike I intend to flip)
    My skill set has always been pretty good with the mechanical side of things but detail work always has me worried I'm going to do more damage than good.

      +David S. it's cool no problem. it all started when I got my first bike. I had to get my fork seals done and got way overcharged for it. I already had a passion for bikes but then in an effort to save money, I became passionate about working on bikes. been doing it almost nonstop for 7 years now. I've learned a lot and experienced a lot. I look up the science behind repairs or the myths as well. I've even noticed that I know more than most people I know that went to MMI. I don't know everything. not even close. But I'm very passionate about learning different systems and keeping bikes running the way they should. still have a lot to learn tho.

    Was having squeaks at 1-4 MPH going to a stop, did this and it fixed it. thanks! I already bought $110 brake pads even though my OEM are good, hoping to fix the squeaky brakes, btw this is the only thing online i could find about fixing it about your way!
    QUESTION:: When I did this half of my bobbins were seized, took a lot to move them the others were easier to move, once I got to spraying and it started moving they were squeaking is this normal or do I need to keep cleaning till the bobbins stop squeaking? (Even though I'm not having brake squeaking anymore would like to know just in case it starts up again, and noticed in the video your bobbins did not squeak at all when you turn them)

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey! Glad to know the trick worked for you. I originally learned this trick from a channel called "Moonfleet41" aka "Delboy's Garage". I then found out that it was a common dealer trick to get brakes to stop squeaking. With regard to your squeaky bobbins, it doesn't matter if they squeak or not. As you can tell, it has no association with squeaky brakes. The best thing you can do is continue to spray the bobbins until you dont see grime or dust coming out of them anymore then you should be all set. I hope this helps. I appreciate the comment. Good luck out there and ride safe.

    I am in my first year of biking and have a cbr 600, my front break has just started squeaking so i am gonna try this. The heat from weather has made it worse, also one of the fork oil seals is bad so maybe its contributed to dirt

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 4 lety +1

      Awesome bike. I honestly love CBR600's. Ensuring to get that oil leak fixed is paramount over squeaky brakes. Oil leaking from the forks onto your brake caliper is a dangerous mix. Hopefully this method works for you. I would love to know how it goes.

    This a cheap band-aid and I would never do this to my bike. You are transforming brake dust into liquid sand paper and grinding it in, widening the factory tolerances on a semi-floating rotor. Break-kleen and a toothbrush at the very least, ultrasonic cleaner will give you the best results with no further damage.

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 3 lety

      That sucks. What you could try now if you haven't, is to lube all moving parts in your brake assembly. Slide pins, rubber grommets, etc. Cleaning the caliper pistons as well. Also, scrub your rotors with a scotchbrite pad or wetsand them with 600-800 grit sandpaper. That may brake loose what gummed up your rotors a little. Should help squeaking. Good luck bro.

    If you tighten the bolt even a hair too much you’ll flatten out the wave washer that acts as a spring and holds the bobbins stiff. The bobbins have nothing to do with preventing brake squeak or judder. It’s to help with thermal expansion. A little brake dust isn’t going to resist the effects of thermal expansion. I asked Dave Moss at the track and he said it’s one of the stupidest things people do to their brakes.

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for your comment! You are correct. However; I had squeaky brakes and tried everything from cleaning the rotor to lubing up pins and adding brake quiet. I performed this little trick and boom. Squeak was gone. I figure that it has to do with the rotor being too tight to the carrier causing the micro-vibrations to resonate throughout the wheel. Kind of like a wine glass when you rub your finger on the rim.
      In any case, that is my first-hand experience with it. Just like people who may or may not believe in god, we all have our own first-hand experiences to believe in what we believe in. Thanks for your thoughts on the matter however. Ride safe! Cheers!

    @MultiGuitarman21 Před 7 lety

    could you break your rotor if done incorrectly, eg if tightented it too much

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 7 lety

      MultiGuitarman21 i will not say you can't. but it is very unlikely because you would have to crank on it pretty hard to get that to damage your rotor. if anything you may bend the bobbin if you tighten it too hard. but even to do that, you would require a great deal of leverage. as long as you aren't using breaker bars, drills, or impact guns, you shouldn't have to worry about messing up your rotor or bobbins doing this trick. great question. thank you for your input.

Brake cleaner is a more aggressive cleaner over carb clean which is why it is a better choice. at the time though, carb clean was all i had. but i strongly recommend brake cleaner for this job instead for best results. i hope this helps. thanks for the comment

    What about when they are too loose, unnormally loose?

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 2 lety

      If the rotor is able to move a little bit in an axial manner; (closer and further from the rim) that is usually an acceptable play. However; if there is radial play, as in it can move forward, back, up, or down, that requires replacement. Some bobbins are spring-loaded and the internal spring may have become siezed due to crud and build-up. Performing this bobbin cleaning may restore it to its usual function. If not, may require replacement.

    Don't try this with modern EBC rotors...X and XC...they have flat sided bobbins which won't spin.EBC also state that the rotors don't float sideways....they expand with heat to take up the float space,nothing to do with aligning with the pads!In fact they state that the buttons should not move and the rotor also should not be able to be moved by hand pressure.And that is on their 'Fully floating' XC discs!

    What size bolt?

      Phillip Millan sorry for the late reply. My emails havent been updating while i was on vacation. The bolt size is dependant on your bobbin size. Get the thickest bolt you can that fits into your bobbins. Good luck bro. I hope it helps

    Can I use WD40?

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 6 lety +3

      Mahmoud Mohammed i wouldn't recommend it because although it is a solvent, it isn't a very abraisive one. Brake cleaner works best for this and wont leave a film on your rotors.

      @disekjoumoer Před 5 lety

      That might easily cause an accident if any is left on your rotors and your brakes fail.

    will it work with wd40 or gasoline?

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 7 lety +1

      PcFanification No. WD-40 is not abraisive enough to break free the dust. Gasoline isn't very abraisive either. both of those would be more suitable for instances where something would have to soak. but not for this job. i hope this helps you

    Way too time consuming. Just buy a product called oil eater. All auto supply stores have it. Spray the wheel with it wait 5 min. Hose off. Then take your hose from your air compressor in your garage and shoot the air at each hole this will complete the cleaning and dry it off.

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 5 lety +1

      Seems like an interesting approach although i am a bit skeptical as to the effectiveness of getting brake dust out of the bobbins. That's the reason you want to move the bobbins because the brake dust is stuck and compressed. Don't see that approach being as effective because of that.

  • @johnmac.6760

    Bobbins do not need to spin, leave them alone mate, ebc have have discs with flat sided bobbins you can't spin them honest mate they don't need it.. 👍

    • @TheMotorcycleBoss
      @TheMotorcycleBoss  Před 4 lety

      I understand what you mean. However, the goal isn't to get it to spin. It's to break loose the brake dust stuck between the bobbin and rotor/rotor basket. If you can vibrate it out that's fine too as long as it gets out. But seeing how most supersports come with holes in the bobbins, it simply just makes it an easier way to do the service.

    Good idea.... YOU CAN also do this with COMPRESSED AIR... "alot less messy" and doesn't cost a dime. Now, if your shits SUPER DIRTY THEN ID ADD THE CLEANER to this factor (for obvious reasons).
