    My father knows a survivor of the MV Dona Paz from our province, he told me that when the ship was engulfed in flames, the man quickly jumped overboard and swam away as fast as he could, when the blaze reached him, he quickly dived down, and when he surfaced to take a breath, he would splash away the flames and dive again. And then he witnessed women and the elderly drowning in the water in the midst of the turmoil, and he said he attempted to save a woman but that didn't happen, he couldn't do anything.
    And on my mother's side, she knows a family of relatives who were ready to board the Dona Paz but decided against it since they didn't like how crowded the ship was and instead waited for another ship to come. Thankfully, they avoided the tragedy.

Doña Paz sister ship the Doña Marilyn was sunk due to a typhoon the following year 300 dead. The Princess of the Orient in 1998 due to a typhoon and 150 dead. And lastly the Princess of the Stars also sank due to a typhoon with 700 dead.

    One of my biggest questions about the Dona Paz, is why do we remember the Titanic far more? I really only know about the Dona Paz through researching maritime disasters.

    25 survivors out of 4386 people, that's more than 98% of people lost. While with the Titanic, I mentioned in the comments of the Estonia video that roughly around 68% was the amount of people lost with the Titanic. That to me, easily makes the Dona Paz a disaster far worse than the Titanic.

    • @supernovax6867
      @supernovax6867 Před 3 lety +14

      The titanic was popular because it was the biggest and most luxurious ship of it’s time. Also there were more survivors to tell their side of the story. James Cameron 1997 titanic film help maintain its legacy.

    • @erinkavanagh-hall5465
      @erinkavanagh-hall5465 Před 2 lety +8

      It’s horrifying, eh?
      And a good question re why Titanic is so much more famous than Dona Paz, and why has a stronger place in our consciousness. I’d say a few reasons.
      1. Titanic was purported to be unsinkable. Like, pretty much indestructible - even to God. And then what happens? She sinks on her maiden voyage, and two thirds of her passengers and crew die. The very thing people swore up and down couldn’t happen. That idea of human hubris and flying in the face of God (whatever that looks like) has captured the imagination of generations. Unfortunately, there are people who just expect things like shipping disasters to happen to less wealthy nations, like the Philippines. Ie “third world”. It’s taken for granted. A few comments on this video have been all like “what do you expect from South East Asia?!” Which is pretty crap. :(
      2. On the same note - much of the “Western” world is so enamoured with Titanic because we identify with those who were there that night. Her passengers and crew were predominantly British/Irish, American or European. And unfortunately, we identity more with the people who look and sound like us. 4000 Asian people...sadly, the white Western world doesn’t identity as strongly, therefore their tragedy doesn’t leave the same mark. Which is absolutely not how it should be...but, in many cases, is how it is. :(
      3. Titanic is such a huge part of our consciousness because of the countless media portrayals throughout the years. And these are mostly British and American films/TV shows/books etc - so they’re pretty easily accessible throughout the media. All these portrayals help keep Titanic alive, and ensure new generations learn the story. I would say Filipino media has captured the Dona Paz extensively - but its media (film, TV etc) won’t have the same reach throughout the world as American or British media. That’s why social media channels like Sam’s are such an important source of education.
      Does that make sense? I agree - Dona Paz needs to be better known. It’s just a disgusting case of corporate negligence, and far more people needed to be held accountable. May those 4000 + innocent souls Rest In Peace.

      James Cameron. Here's your answer

    • @zachhoward9099
      @zachhoward9099 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Most of Dona Paz passengers were poor by Western Standards while Titanic had many members of the ultra wealthy and upper class on board. She was on her maiden voyage while Dona Paz was a 20 plus year old ferry that had been gutted by fire in 1979 then bought back by the shipping company after it had been written off and rebuilt but never got one of its key compliance certificates regarding stability. It was traveling between points in the Philippines whereas the Titanic was traveling from Great Britain to New York City so American media didn’t give a rip, especially with Christmas right around the corner. And sadly a lot of people just wrote it off as some third world overcrowding disaster which more or less is true, practically all the factors that lead to this tragedy are endemic of the corruption that lies in the third world. While James Cameron’s film refreshed the topic and opened it up to a new generation the Titanic was always seen as synonymous with the term shipwreck due to the immense press leading up to and even more so after the tragedy

    As an American living in the Philippines I am familiar with the Dona Paz disaster and thanks so much for sharing. It is very common for public transportation in the Philippines to be grossly overloaded on a regular basis. I have ridden on jeepneys in Manila that are filled to double capacity and once rode a mini van transit meant for 12 people actually carrying 24, with children sitting on the floors and 3 more in the side entry area for the 1 hour ride home from the mall. This is with grocery bags on our laps which led to a miserable overheated trip.
    As much as I love the Philippines and the people here, you hit the issues of both accountability and the reach for extra profits right on the head with this video. They are very important points to be aware of when travelling here that there are still a few with that third world mentality to watch for.

    Also, I live in Washington which has one of the most extensive ferry systems in the world, right as it leaves the dock the announcements state where you can find life jackets, which are always on the passenger deck under the seats withe HUGE white label in read letters reading "LIFE VESTS" with the number of adult size and child size ones. They are NEVER locked. I get nervous traveling by boat cause I'm a poor swimmer so I always make a note of where life jackets are every time (watching 'Titanic, 'Posideon', 'Sinking of thr Lusitania' and 'Britannic' didnt help 🤣)
    I cant imagine how terrified those passengers were. That breaks my heart.

    As for the disaster, it's horrible! Only 25 survivers! Also that the company didn't aknwoledge their mistakes is unbelieveble! That's so cruel and inhumane.
    Are there no way for them to get jutice on their side?

    Sam: The lights on the side of the ship do not communicate which direction the two ships are to pass. They identify the sides of the ship as port or starboard. Passing between two ships is determined by "nautical rules of the road" (you can see the US Coast Guard version online). All these rules are set by an international organization and I would be surprised if the Philippine local waters had different rules. Not following the rules of the road was critical in the Andrea Doria and Stockholm collision. Then it was that both ships should turn to starboard to avoid collision. I would think that hasn't changed. Of course with the Vector's steering trouble, ...

    It's always great whenever I'm researching a maritime disaster and come across one of your videos. I know I can trust the information and not only are they well researched and well explained, but you always humanize the situation and can make us see the incident from multiple different angles and you're brilliant at painting a complete picture for us. Thank you for your hard work & dedication. I know there are not many women out there with a love of ocean liners, but I'm one of the few who will also eventually be joining you guys in creating some (hopefully good) documentaries about this. I am a graphics designer and have made some other compilation-style documentaries in regard to other controversial issues that you won't find on CZcams due to them being a bit too spicy and graphic in nature, however I will be dabbling with 3D graphics and animations. I just wanted to thank you again for inspiring me. I know it's going to take some time for me to develop those skills (as the programs are pretty complicated) but so is the Adobe suite, which I've been working with for about 20 years now. If you ever need any normal 2D graphics, let me know as I would be happy to volunteer my time for your channel. God Bless you hun! I look forward to all of your videos! ❤🙏🔥

    I live in the Philippines. I wasn't born at that time, however I have never heard of this disaster until recently. I have no idea this would be such a tragic, horrific disaster; a true hellish nightmare. I feel that the Philippine maritime companies would certainly learn from this and would care not to let this happen again; they are haunted by this even if there are those who don't know of this disaster much. I've known of a survivor so traumatized by this, he says he'd never want to board ships again and would just ride passenger planes.
    Now I got to say a transport ship like this being overcrowded isn't pleasant, especially if it's not a passenger liner when you got some luxury and comfort. That being said, if it's this overcrowded and has bad conditions with little to no comfort, I'd not want to board it.

    This tragedy is infamous here in the Philippines to present day. This was the very definition of GREED. BTW, the crew of the Doña Paz were not on thr bridge because they were having an effin Christmas Party as one of the survivors recalled. What's worse the line still operates to this day although just for cargo only. And this was only No. 1 on their list. They had like 6 other sinkings with like 700ish casualties each. I can't fathom how they got away scott free. I still see their offices on my daily commute.

It's a common shipping route here in the Philippines. It's 1700 ft deep. People literally mobbed Sulpicio Offices. It was utter chaos. imagine broken windows, bloody office workers. Only those on official manifest got some sort of payment. Those that were sold the "unofficial way" by scalpers, their families got nada. Another infamous disaster from same line was MV Princess of the Stars. The line disregarded the Philippine Coast Guard and sailed during a Category 2 Typhoon. The ship literally went "Poseidon" in 1 hour. 814 dead, 56 survived. And this was 2008. After that their passenger license was revoked and now only operates for cargo under a new name Philspan Asia Carrier Corp.

    I remember watching a documentary about this, horrific!
    You should do the SS Sultana, a paddlewheeler that exploded and sank in the Mississippi river in April 1865. Like the Dona Paz, the Sultana was way overcrowded and ~1,200 people were lost.
    Another one you should do is the General Slocum, it was a paddlewheeler that set out on a pleasure cruise on New York's East River in June 1904 with 1300 people onboard including hundreds of children. During the voyage a fire broke out. A boy ran into the bridge to alert the Captain of a fire, but he dismissed it as a 'childish game'. The crew then turned on the firehoses, which had never been used or even tested in the 13 year service of the ship. As soon as they turned on the water the hoses fell apart. The passengers grabbed the lifejackets, but like the firehoses they had never been used or even inspected, and by then the cork was long gone so these lifejackets had the buoyancy of dirt. Some people tried to launch the lifeboats but they were wired to the deck and could not be freed even with knives. By this point the Captain became aware of the fire and instead of turning to shore which was a few hundred meters on either side, he sailed the General Slocum another mile to beach it on an island. This caused the fire to spread even more. When he beached the ship it turned into a different direction in which the wind blew the flames onto the unburnt side of the ship.
    In the end over 1,000 people had died and the Captain was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but only served 3 and a half years. It was discovered that many other ships were in the same condition as the General Slocum.
    This remained New York's worst disaster until 9/11.
    :(

    Great video on an unfairly overlooked disaster in maritime history! I would recommend making videos on (1) the sinking of the riverboat Sultana in 1865, which resulted in the deaths of 1120 people - the worst in U.S. history, and (2) the 1915 capsizing of the Eastland, a Chicago ferry, which claimed the lives of over 800, making it the worst disaster in the history of the Great Lakes. Hope you consider these.;]

    @FlyingEndeavor Před 3 lety +1

    Thank you so much for covering this topic. The sad reality of the country I live in. Also to note, the government agency in charge of the investigation, is also linked to the Philippine Coast Guard who is also partly to blame for clearing the Dona Paz to sail despite being woefully overloaded. Hence why even the government here did not want to make public just how many people were on board the Dona Paz during the disaster. But of course, my country is run by extremely CORRUPT and greedy individuals, and the lives of people never really mattered to them. No one really likes to take accountability, and I think there are still some families here seeking justice for what happened but never got it.
    There are just so many controversies surrounding this disaster. I would NEVER ride a ship or ferry here in the Philippines, since the problems still persist till this day. The ships are still constantly overloaded and poorly maintained. And of course, the complete disregard for safety. Sulpicio Lines especially. Just a few years back, another ship was also sunk with an official tally of 814 lives lost, MV Princess of the Stars, also operated by Sulpicio Lines. Sailed despite there being a typhoon, and literally capsized. The are so many hauntings photos of it, upside down with only the bottom part of the ship by the bow section still above the water. I couldn't even begin to imagine what it is like for the people that are still on board when it capsized....
    Perhaps that could be another video for the future, MV Princess of the Stars.
