- This video explores the recent scientific research on the brain health benefits of consuming green tea. It highlights both the acute and chronic effects of green tea consumption on the brain, focusing on three key compounds found in green tea: caffeine, L-theanine, and catechins.
In the acute phase, which lasts approximately 30 to 120 minutes after consuming green tea, changes in mood, attention, and cognitive performance are observed due to the presence of caffeine and L-theanine. Caffeine is known to improve mood and cognitive performance acutely, while chronic intake of caffeine has been associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, moderation is key, as excessive caffeine intake can negatively affect sleep quality and sleep latency.
L-theanine, another important compound in green tea, has both short-term and long-term effects on the brain. It has been found to relieve stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, alleviate depression, enhance learning and memory, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Studies have shown that L-theanine supplementation significantly reduces stress and anxiety levels, particularly during stressful periods such as final exams and starting a new job.
Chronic daily intake of green tea containing L-theanine acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in the brain, contributing to a lower risk of Alzheimer's, dementia, and Parkinson's diseases. Additionally, regular consumption of L-theanine has been linked to improved cognitive function in middle and older-aged individuals and increased neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells.
The video emphasizes the importance of selecting high-quality green tea to maximize the brain health benefits, as higher grade teas typically contain higher levels of L-theanine. Overall, the research presented suggests that green tea consumption can have significant positive effects on brain health, particularly when consumed in moderation and in high-quality forms.
We also discuss the family of neuroactive compounds in green tea known as catechins, focusing specifically on their role in brain health. We highlight the importance of EGCG, the most abundant catechin in green tea, and discuss its function as a free radical scavenger, protecting brain cells from oxidative damage. We also delve into how green tea catechins affect gene expression related to antioxidant activity, inflammation regulation, and neurotransmitter systems, ultimately promoting neurogenesis and enhancing brain function. Furthermore, we explore the concept of the "tea-brain-gut axis," discussing recent research showing that green tea consumption can influence gut microbiota and neurotransmitter levels, potentially alleviating psychiatric and neurological disorders.
Lastly, we mention our 8-chapter MasterClass on Tea available on CZcams, offering further information on tea types and their health effects.

I drink no less than one cup of green tea daily. Got in the habit of drinking only water and green tea. Figured that's all I need as for drinks. There's a reason cultures have been drinking it for centuries.
Green Tea is good for health - not that we recommend it to be replaced with it being thirsty, but it has its own benefits too! Also, do check out Gya Tea for more information 😊
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for another Wu Mountain Tea video forever - the technical analysis and tea education is unmatched for us in the west! Hope you’ve been doing great Dylan!
Yes, Love his videos, always full of good information! Love him❤
I can only imagine the time that went into making this video and the PDF. I've definitely noticed many benefits from drinking green tea regularly, most notably an improvement in chronic digestive issues. Anyway, amazing work, thank you for sharing it! And thanks for the reminder to delve back into your masterclass series.
THIS! THIS is the content I've been waiting to come back into my life. Loving the breakdown of scientific articles for the non-academics. Its unfortunate that so much JUICY information is locked behind scientific articles that folks not accustomed to the torture of reading through these articles can see so I love that you've turned into a sort of scientific communicator. This is the content needed in the non-tea-centered cultures (primarily the west) and adds that extra nerdy (guilty pleasure) scientific knowledge on top.
Congratulations on this fantastic video. I just spent 4 hours watching it, reading the PDF, and translating it for my non-English speaking colleagues. Needless to say, during lunch break, I couldn't contain how magnificent I found this work of yours.
I have no idea why youtube recommended this video for me but it’s very interesting, I might just start drinking green tea
Honey tastes best in green tea, and wait a couple minutes for the water to cool a bit. 75⁰C is the best temp
@@audreydoyle5268god I love it with honey lmao
I did and feel like 40% better 😃😎
Good to see you back my friend!!!!

Awesome video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for the PDF
Welcome back. Finally.... Please keep making more content
Just stumbled upon your channel recently after wrapping up my first paper on tea science for college. Your recommendations have totally opened up a whole new world of tea for me! Honestly, I thought this channel was fading away when I first found it, but I'm so glad you're back with your vibrant content. This video feels like it condenses more knowledge about green tea than my last few months of meta-analysis. Definitely, I’ll never get enough! Sending love from Quebec, Canada 💚
YES LET US GO, been waiting for this one for ever :D
Great video Dillan. I have really enjoyed your videos on tea. I am really interested iin all of the different tea types. I would love it if you did a deep dive into each of the different types of tea. Not one video talking about all of the different types like you have already made, but a individual video for each type. Thanks for what you put out already. I feel like I have really learned a lot from your channel.
Omg I love you (and you’re extremely informative, data driven, and well edited videos, too!) 🍵

This video is just absolutely amazing!
My weird obsession with tea is dimmed by yours! The info was succinct and encouraging for all of my clients (I practice TCM )…if i can just talk them into “dirt water washed off leaves”. Keep at it!

Salamat! Thank you! This is the video I’ve been waiting for. Thanks for making it. Absolutely brilliant information.
Incredible information and presentation. I applaud the quality of this video.
Awesome quality information, thank you!
Oddly enough some days caffeine makes me sleepy, some days it makes me wired all day, some days I feel euphoric, and some days I don't feel anything. Most often though I feel wired for a few hours and then I crash.
Do you have ADHD?
Soo very informative, and you explain things so understandably. Thank you!
You're a walking advert for the brain benefits of green tea, you seem cheery, you're well informed, this is as super extensive video :) thumbs up all around

作为一个有常年喝茶经验(大概有30年)的中国人,我觉得您讲得非常详细非常好!
Excelent
I didn’t know that metabolism is correlated to caffeine tolerance, that’s so cool. Keep the videos coming 🔥
So I'm just getting into tea but I'm also a neurobiology student and this is great information and makes me even more enthusiastic! It's so much cooler than coffee. Taste a hell of a lot better too lol. I actually just learned about CREB and how it works with long-term potentiation in the hippocampus so it's really cool to hear how green tea catechins help support it.
Great video wow, the pdf too
Fantastic insightful video, thank you so much for posting. Haven't drunk Green tea for a long time but I will be buying some tomorrow. Thanks again 😁
Thank you so much for your tea contributions. We knew EGCG was good for a while now but the brain health specifics are really astonishing, it's good to know there's very legitimate reasons to drink it.
Thanks !
I expected robot voice when clicking on this video cause of the thumbnail. Glad it was not. Really informative video, I feel like I'm gonna go back to this and watch it again. Thank you for your work 🍵
So glad to see you again! Can you tell us how much of this translates to other tea types?
This is the best video, on green tea and its contents. Would you please make a video on impact of l-theanine on OCD.
Awesome to see another upload and a fascinating topic! I drink aged white tea daily so I wonder what the differences would be for daily drinkers of different tea varieties
How do you afford daily aged white tea? Are there affordable options for it? I love white tea but the prices tend to scare me.
Thanks
I been drinking green tea for a few months now and it has noticeability reduced my anxiety and improve my emotional regulation
Such a great video. From a fellow neuroscientist 🧠
