THIS is Your Brain on GREEN TEA: New (2024) Science on the Brain Health Benefits of Green Tea *WOW*
This video explores the recent scientific research on the brain health benefits of consuming green tea. It highlights both the acute and chronic effects of green tea consumption on the brain, focusing on three key compounds found in green tea: caffeine, L-theanine, and catechins.
In the acute phase, which lasts approximately 30 to 120 minutes after consuming green tea, changes in mood, attention, and cognitive performance are observed due to the presence of caffeine and L-theanine. Caffeine is known to improve mood and cognitive performance acutely, while chronic intake of caffeine has been associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. However, moderation is key, as excessive caffeine intake can negatively affect sleep quality and sleep latency.
L-theanine, another important compound in green tea, has both short-term and long-term effects on the brain. It has been found to relieve stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, alleviate depression, enhance learning and memory, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Studies have shown that L-theanine supplementation significantly reduces stress and anxiety levels, particularly during stressful periods such as final exams and starting a new job.
Chronic daily intake of green tea containing L-theanine acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in the brain, contributing to a lower risk of Alzheimer's, dementia, and Parkinson's diseases. Additionally, regular consumption of L-theanine has been linked to improved cognitive function in middle and older-aged individuals and increased neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells.
The video emphasizes the importance of selecting high-quality green tea to maximize the brain health benefits, as higher grade teas typically contain higher levels of L-theanine. Overall, the research presented suggests that green tea consumption can have significant positive effects on brain health, particularly when consumed in moderation and in high-quality forms.
We also discuss the family of neuroactive compounds in green tea known as catechins, focusing specifically on their role in brain health. We highlight the importance of EGCG, the most abundant catechin in green tea, and discuss its function as a free radical scavenger, protecting brain cells from oxidative damage. We also delve into how green tea catechins affect gene expression related to antioxidant activity, inflammation regulation, and neurotransmitter systems, ultimately promoting neurogenesis and enhancing brain function. Furthermore, we explore the concept of the "tea-brain-gut axis," discussing recent research showing that green tea consumption can influence gut microbiota and neurotransmitter levels, potentially alleviating psychiatric and neurological disorders.
Lastly, we mention our 8-chapter MasterClass on Tea available on CZcams, offering further information on tea types and their health effects.

Whether as a note, addendum, or it's own separate video; I think it would be helpful to address plants that can be planted nearby camellia sinensis with positive benefits. Plants that enjoy the ~4.5 pH soil (or specifically attempt to counterbalance it to maintain soil health long-term), nitrogen-fixing plants that help reduce need for fertilizers, pest-control or decoy plants that repel, discourage, or Take The Hit to protect tea plants, preferred tree species that provide the optimal level of shade to mimic valley conditions mentioned in Ch.2, or even things like flowers that Just Taste Good With Tea. Going above and beyond the tea plant to describe it's ideal permaculture plot would be really nice, many people are already familiar with the concept of the Three Sisters (planting Corn, Bean, and Squash together) and I'm wondering what tea's sisters would be? Could you account for 100% of the soils pH and nitrogen problems at the cost of tea density? Does tea pollinate via wind-blown-pollen or does it need bees? Does honey made from tea nectar have a nice taste? Could you grow it in your backyard, perhaps in a big pot or wooden box and make your own home-made white tea? So many fun little questions about the agriculture here. Thanks for the 'diploma'! It was a joy to watch your series, and your passion really came through.

This is very helpful thank you! I just recently got into tea, switched over from coffee since I don't want to drink sugary drinks and I can't drink coffee straight. I noticed that if I drink over four cups of tea (8oz each) a day i will start getting stomach pains, on the left side of my stomach. Its weird, but I imagine it has to do with some of the tannins and maybe catechins affecting my stomach. After reading this, it seems like the best way to avoid these compounds is use less leaf, lower water temp and maybe try to stick to oolongs and puers? What would you recommend?

Hey. Love the videos. I have a question. What is your opinion on cold brewing. To explain, im a bartender and use teas in many, many different cocktails. Alcoholic and none alcoholic. If you were to cold brew it and then warm up the water afterwards, would you get a better flavour? I've always been taught not to "cook" most ingredients and to be fair, its cocktails. Not too many are served hot. I'm just bringing it up for discussion. Would love to know your thoughts.

Hello, Could you please tell a bit more about black tea leaves that are green in color? Well, I ordered SFTGFOP1 Black tea from Darjeeling (Spring Flush) and the leaves are green in color. You mention in this video that it's a bad thing? Also, how trustworthy is the tea grade mentioned on the packaging printed by the tea company itself? Because it doesn't have too many of the whole leaves, some straw and visibly shredded pieces of leaves. It turns bitter on steeping above the 2.75 minute mark at 90 C.
