    I don't care who you are , don't punch a wall, ever! Only strike a surface that has some give, especially as a beginner. Love Sensei's quiet spirit and attention to detail.

    These are a great series. At 4:30 this is similar to a wing chun “lap da” , where you shoot your arm fwd to intercept a strike or grab, turn your wrist, pull them while punch with other hand.

    I did Shotokan for 8 years .3 times week and a couple of separate 1 week all day courses
    .regards the straight punches although I started on in 72 and stopped in 80 ( I am 78 ) I really cannot swing a punch .BUT in my experience at the dojo , trying to block a straight punch is hard if you have never trained .I will admit most of the time I punched straight to the chest ( pulled my punches ) but I have used a concreted ( in my garage floor ) makiwara punching board ,to practise full power punching .Using knuckles/ edge of hand and palm .Plus a heavy bag .
    Obviously unless your dojo opponent is wearing protective equipment you cannot really connect full power punches to the chest .We developed a good technique ( can still do ) where you punch fast yo the body but you snap back the fist and you make contact ( make a noise to opponents gi, ) to show you made a point .in a real life fight I would not pull back my punch as then the power of my punch would travel down the forearm into my fist into the assailants body .
    Then I would run like he'll .lucky although 78 I still train and can still run of I have to .lol
    Never forget those 8 years .graded by sensei( tiger ) Enoeda. Long since died.

    excellent points. i'm beginnning to see the finer points to the explanations that I have forgotten. This is just the Basic form. but the concept here is the movement of the hip. the idea is to be able to attack from any position, whether one is facing another direction so that one can utilize the hips for punching. Thanks for the report.,,

    what is the main differences between shorin ryu and goju ryu styles?
    I practice shorin ryu, but, some people say the goju ryu style is better for self defense

    • @TKDLION
      @TKDLION Před 5 lety +5

      "some people say" I wouldn't worry about that. I prefer Shorin Ryu, but both are great for self defense. Goju has deeper stances, Shorin has more natural (higher) stances. Goju places a bit more emphasis on power, Shorin places a bit more emphasis on speed. They have different kata, so different strategies for combat.

    How do you defend against commotio cordis when they strike you in the chest? Is it possible to condition the chest to be stronger against blows to the heart?

    • @alexmash1353
      @alexmash1353 Před 5 lety

      Get some muscles. It is one of their roles to protect the body. Not that it gives much protection, but better than nothing, especially if you consider other pluses of it.
      But I would not be worried about the heart. Have many people tried to strike you there during sparring sessions? Except some random one punches, no one has ever tried to hit me there. Your hand keep it covered most of the time. I would recommend be worried more about your head, solar plexus and abdominal area.
