    This might be the roughest, most completely destroyed engine yet! While climbing around in a pile of core engines, I noticed the user-installed inspection ports and knew this one was special.
    This is a 3.3L Lambda GDI V6 from a 2016 Kia Sorento. These engines make 290hp and seem to be pretty unreliable just based on the demand in the secondary market. However, I don't think you could blame the manufacturer for this one. WOW, that's all I can say about this.
    Why do I do these? I own and run a full service salvage facility in the Saint Louis area called Importapart. Part of our model is dismantling core engines to salvage the good parts. We do not rebuild engines, merely supply parts to those that do.

    We see this type of damage a lot in Florida. People try to power through deep water and continue with their foot to the floor even after the noises under the hood keep getting louder and louder.

      If all you care about is making the noises under the hood stop, this is honestly a really effective and fast way to make the noises stop forever. Sure, the noises will briefly get really loud... But then there will be silence!

      I think you're right. IIRC, GDI motors run a bit higher compression since they're injecting the gas... I'm guessing powering through little bit of water, sucked a little in the engine, pistons stopped before TDC, and the connecting rods said, "I got further to go." Punches through pistons, or snaps rods. Then it just makes mince meat out of the internals coming down from running speed.

      That's the most common cause of this level of destruction, but in this case it's a Hyundai/Kia engine, which don't require water ingestion to self-destruct this severely. I believe Hyundai intentionally designs the engines to grenade just outside of warranty.

      @@99domini99 For some reason I vaguely remember seeing this (from the chunked-out oil pan) in one of those car mechanical fail videos, like _Just Rolled In_ or something similar, and the result of flat-towing the car accidentally in gear. I wish I could remember the episode, but at any rate that's usually how something like this happens. Engines take a lot of work to turn over when they are coming apart and once more than half of the cylinders are defunct, just wont run anymore. However if we add some extra rented cylinders from U-Haul, that will do the trick quite well. Even worse will be the driver being completely oblivious to the cataclysm taking place behind them.

      @@99domini99 And I say the above from experience as the first one or two rods it throws are quite energetic when you set out to destroy an engine, but after that its usually just messy, smoky, and not that exciting with a gas engine. I hear old diesels tend to be a lot more destructive just due to the nature of how they work, and their ability to just about keep running no matter what.

      Actually you won't hear much. The engine was being push started with water in the cylinder.

      Actually, you might. I blew up a 225 slant six in a pickup going up a slick clay road at high rpm (for a slant six) and when it let go, it was pretty noisy for a few seconds. It knocked holes in both sides of the engine and the pan.​@swamivardana9911

    As someone that has grenaded more than my fair share of engines, I can say in all honesty that this is the most blown up engine that I have ever seen. I am impressed and amazed. I really would have liked to hear it let go though.

    Loving your engine tear-downs from here in the UK. As a race engine builder in a former life, I can honestly say that I've pulled apart engines that let go at 10,000rpm - with less internal (and external) damage. Hats off to the Kia owner who tried to 'clear' the misfire with some proper foot-to-the-floor conviction. Oh, and the cam followers have DLC (Diamond Like) coating, hence the black colour. Great work Eric. Keep 'em coming, and here's a big UK thank you to the all the dipstick-phobic American car owners out there.

      could this have been a Manual Trans car that got chain tow while in gear, after the initial failure (like out of a flooded street)? then towing spinning the engine anhilated the remainder?

      For sure, by the time I finished watching the deconstruction I was more amazed that the engine block itself was still in one piece 🤣 The noise it must have made when it was coming apart must've sounded like the entire car was about to fall to pieces, not just the engine!!!!

    In my 50 plus years of working on all types of engines as a dealer tech from chainsaws to huge excavation equipment this engine easily qualifies as the most carnage ever, the sheer savagery inflicted of these poor engines always blows my mind begging the question, "people can't be that stupid, can they?"

      i've seen alot worse...during a divorce, her husband put their suburban in N and floored till it stopped then cranked the starter until it caught on fire...5 rods out and part of the cam sticking straight up through the TBI.....Dodge van 318 knocked the cylinder walls out you look from the front cylinder through the middle cylinders all the way through the back of the block...and of course both customers only wanted short blocks ha Fn haha

    That's the kind of engine I'd claim had an electrical issue. The electrical issue being that the flying conrod ripped the alternator off.

    You know that when this engine blew, it was most likely at fairly high RPM and it took a relatively long time to stop turning. And it was incredibly noisy when it failed. All those impact marks inside the block take time to create. Maybe a hundred revolutions of the crankshaft were necessary in order to make that many hits. At least.

      At some point though as the engine is going to bits one of those pieces should have just locked it up. I'm thinking it got spun at high RPM like it was shifted into 1st at speed (downhill for more momentum) and then never let off until the vehicle came to a stop. There isn't a huge amount of oil starvation damage just carnage like it got over revved and self destructed.

      A long time is relative. Turning 3000 rpm it is doing 50 revolutions per second, so two seconds will give you that hundred turns. If they pinned it to the limiter it'd only take one second.

    First and foremost, I have NEVER commented on a CZcams video and you are my first.
    My husband and oldest son are ridiculous vehicle people and your channel is the only one I will watch with him. You make me laugh and “it’s fine,” “‘ole blue,” “safety bin” and “nuggets” have become a part of my vernacular (these make my husband and both sons stare at me with “bless your heart” eyes.)
    This video made my husband laugh harder than any other video. He had to pause to catch his breath. It was fantastic. I laughed too but I didn’t really know what I was laughing at; the holes and your commentary just did the trick.
    Thanks for your awesome videos and allowing my husband and I to agree on one channel we can watch together.

    That is quite the carnage for sure! Was enjoying to watch~ Speaking of Hyundai and Kia, I have a suggestion for a future teardown for the channel: the 1.4L T-GDI Kappa II (G4LD) out of the 2017-20 Elantra Eco. I had one of these fail at 120k in 2018 due to metal flakes in the oil that were discovered at the beginning of a major 30k service. Engine still ran fine at the time! Dealer still warranteed the engine replacement even though I was outside the 100k window, but I never did find out what the cause of the failure was. I also heard the 2011-2016 1.8L (G4NB) Nu engine was another problem child of theirs which could be another good future teardown, but my 2011 I had 371k miles on it with zero issues.
    Anyways, keep up the hard work and the awesome vids, good buddy~

      HA! My buddy's dad did this to a VW Rabbit. Left the car in first gear, and hit the highway towing it with his class A motorhome. He noticed some oil dripping at the gas station, so he opened the hood, and there wasn't much left of the engine, HAHAHAHA! Head was OFF, carnage similar to this one everywhere, HAHAHA! I'd hate to be the guy driving behind that one when it let go! 🤣

      Yeah I've been commenting to this CZcamsr for over a year about getting the Milwaukee 3/8 stubby M12 but I never got no reply from him. I kept asking him what is he doing running that M18 bit driver impact or his 3/8 Drive pneumatic when the Milwaukee M12 stubby would do both jobs and run on one charge for a couple days with the bigger battery.

      That little gun is my most used tool. I’ve had one for a couple used years, and it looks like it’s been through several nuclear wars, and it still works awesome. Routinely takes off lug nuts and bolts, crank pulley bolts, and the most impressive I’ve got out of it was every head bolt broke loose on a 5.9l Cummins. It does like to throw its batteries out, but holding them in or the gun upside down, they stay in. I’ll be gutted when it finally dies.

      It's really too bad that M12 batteries, especially the 6.0's, have such weak tabs holding them in. I've broken so many of the upper cases, and I'm not that hard on my stubby!

    Having watched nearly all your teardown videos now, this has to be the top. The shear amount or damage to the block and oil pan is unprecedented.
    Adding it all up. the fact only one piston/rod assembly barely survived, that most of the rods removed themselves from the crank, and the the wrist pins off the 5 broken rods either were smashed to nothing or left the building entirely? There's no question, this has brought new levels of destruction to the channel. Truely amazing. Thanks again Eric!
    Edit: forgot about the heads being wrecked too! What a mess!

    I'm going with towed behind a motor home while in 1st gear. The water is most likely rain water. This thing hit 10,000 RPM for a while until Grandma noticed the smoke and squealing tires behind the motor home.

      I tend to agree here as this is most unlikely that it keep running for this long. This is more conducive to being towed while in gear to reach ungodly rpm levels.

    The reason behind there being two head-bolts loose on both sides is actually a manufacturing defect in the block casting where the threads will stretch. Had to do a short block on one recently due to it being bad enough to cause a head gasket leak. Also explains why these engines are so pricey due to that being a common failure. But my god this was something else carnage wise lol

      Since I have a car with this engine, this was indeed the part that confounded me. These bolts supposed to be torqued evenly just right. It does not seem that the hydrolocking lifted the heads?
      What did you do to fix the bolt? Just retightened them?

      @@franzliszt4257 I’m not sure the story of the engine in the video. But in one instance I had a 2017 Sorento that came in with overheating concerns. Luckily they had a third party warranty that covered the short block replacement. Unfortunately that’s really the only way to fix the issue because it’s the actual casting of the block that’s weak not the bolts. Kia is well aware of this issue and unfortunately it is pretty common once the car gets close to 100k. And who knows if the new block will have the same issue. As a technician I wouldn’t own a 2011-up. The old ones are rock solid before they went to gdi

    Always enjoy your video series in here about tearing down engines that got trashed, either through neglect or abuse or just plain junky design. This engine had a real serious case of disintegrating metal mites on crack!
    In my career in the mechanical field(automotive/heavy equipment/motorcycle mechanics)of 35+ years, one thing stands out as a determining factor: so many people treat a vehicle like an appliance rather than do normal maintenance to keep their rig running correctly. Sad but true, and you have a lucrative business dealing in these salvaged vehicles & powertrain parts that others have trashed in daily usage.

      Would make sense if it had a manual transmission, but the 2016 Sorento didn't come with a manual in the US. I do agree though; it's quite incredible the engine could bomb itself to that degree under it's own power.

    I know maybe not a super common engine anymore, but some people use them for turbo builds apparently, I was hoping to see a teardown of a 3RZFE, there isn't much out there on those and they're long lasting like the 5VZ you did, but quite different in design. Love all the videos, keep it going!

    I think this was the best yet for sure :) the damage caused by those flailing rods is very impressive. I was most impressed by the inward dents on the block made by a rod & pin hammering at it from the outside before fleeing the scene of the crime !!

    Hej Eric, I´ve been watching your videos with great pleasure when you and your friend ”Blue” tear down modern car engines. I find your analysis of the broken down machine educational and very interesting. I mean how often do you see the inside of an modern high performance engine. Many elegant techincal solutions. Was it Mercedes with the intercooler buried deep in the V8 ”valley”, nice!
    I my youth here in Sweden I was surrounded mostly of 4 cyl cast iron
    pushrod engines.
    I like your humorous tone. Keep up the good work!

    More carnage than an episode of Forged in Fire!!! Sitting here on Sunday morning, trying to figure out if the engineering on the Lambda was so good the engine damage was "contained" or so bad there weren't fail safes. Doug Marcaida would likely say "It will KEAL." As always, Eric, your analysis beats the sports commentators by a quantum factor...since you are right there DOING THE WORK.       @@bryanwinter3289 Be patient. The GDI engines are very picky about fuel and oil. Even with the best care and feeding, plan on an injector or two (with the full fuel pipe hki) before 100,000 and a high pressure oil pump around 125,000, with the associated timing components. We won't be getting another. As long as I can find it, I'll stick to port injection.

      @mausball I hope to avoid that. I change the oil every 5,000 or less. Only use Penzoil Ultra Platinum, a low Volatility oil and use a high quality fuel system cleaner at each oil change interval.

    Seeing the damage in this work of art, the only way I could see it having this mess is either towing it for a lot of highway miles in gear or somehow getting it to so seriously over-rev (70MPH into first gear?) There is no way someone could get an engine to do this damage by just sheer acceleration or powering through a puddle. This IS the most beautiful piece of art you have shown us so far!

    This core is the T2000 of engine catastrophes. It. Just. Keeps. Coming. BAAAAAAaacccck! This thing stayed for the extra innings, took a running leap off a cliff, turned around mid-air, and gave a hearty salute as it plunged into the foggy depths. This one narrowly beats the Ford Modular with 4 pistons at TDC.

    I really enjoy every one of these engine tear downs. I did a number of engine rebuilds “back in the day’, the old school overhead valve, cam in the block cast iron engines of the 60s - 70s. Watching you tear these down shows me how much things have changed since then and how very uncomfortable I would be with these. Please keep doing this to remind me why I no longer work on cars, if someone needs a 1974 slant 6 rebuilt, that’s a possibility but I thank you for showing me what I am missing.
    But I have to ask you, do any of the engineers or people involved in designing or building the engines you’ve “autopsied” ever contact you? Seems like you could give them some good insight.

      That Ford 1.0l, 3 cylinder has to be one of the all time classic POC engines - along with Chrysler’s 2.7 V6 and the 140 Vega engines. All three companies produced - and continue to produce some engines that are real stalwarts among their peers, but these, you look at them and you can only say what were they thinking?

    Eric, I agree 100%, this is the worst, high grade damage yet. I do have a theory, when you were first pointing out the dents of the wind-age pan, I believe that they occurred from an "internal space meteor storm", and maybe the reason for the missing wrist pins is the rods & pistons had carpal pinitus, I'm hoping it's not contagious.
    There's one thing I would like to ask of you, how about having your wife be a special guest star and assist you in a tear down, this could be really good if she has a personality like you, and thanks for doing these videos, very educational & entertaining.

    Wow! I have no idea how that engine survived long enough to do that much damage. Any back story on the core? Reminds me of a contest our local fair used to do; take an old beater, drain the coolant and oil, start it, pin the throttle to the floor and see how long it took to blow up. They would sell time ‘slots’ and if you had the winning time you won the pot. Best one was an early 70’s Dodge Dart with a 225 slant 6, it never did blow up so the fair won the event.
    This is definitely the most carnage ever, great tear down Eric!

We've seen some grenaded motorcycle/ Atv motors come in. Seen a few with bullet holes from other hunters shooting the quads in the woods for disturbing peace, a few We've repaired and got them running again with minimal parts.

    Easily top 3 status with this one. It's pretty ridiculous when you can pull the crank out after only removing one rod and piston. Starting out with more windows in the block than a school bus clinches it.
