I love Ma Long but why does nobody talk about how well Franziska played. Well deserved victory.
Because when you're the favorite people talk about how you lost not who beat you.
Because the reason the game went the way it went was Ma Long not being ready to play. Nobody cares how well Franziska played, it's never anywhere near enough when the other guy plays his best :)
Its also subconsciously a david and Goliath playing out.... So it will be very hard to impossible to make this centuries old paradigm shift

Phenomenal match! What a nail-biter watching those last few points. How did Franziska manage to keep his nerves?! Franzi's look of happiness and relief at the end says it all. He may be the only player to have ever beaten all of the "big 3" (Fan, Xu Xin and Ma Long). That roller at 20:06 from almost floor level off Ma Long's "double happiness" is a moment of timeless magic that Franziska is unlikely to ever forget, while Adam Bobrow's sublime commenting provides the golden frame.🔥
That shot is unreturnable. The clearance of the bounce is less than the thickness of the paddle.
Even on the losing end of PF's spectacular roller retrieval, we observe another aspect of Ma Long's greatness. Notice ML never assumed he'd won the point even after he got the net + edge. He remained ready for the ball to come back. When it did, he tried to play it. Anything less than Franziska's perfect roll touch, and ML would have still finished the point with a lift to the open court.

Why most of you talking about the retirement of Ma Long??? I've to admit that in the First Set there were some unforced Errors of him. But the Rest of the Match Patrick Franziska played outstanding Points and in this constitution he can Beat all Players in the world - even If they Play there normal strength/Level.
So, please Talk about that fantastic Match, about the mental strength and about the tactical cleverness of Patrick Franziska instead of talking about Ma Longs retirement.
And what's your problem if people talk about ma long retirement only.

Just imagine sb say to Kanak Jha for instance "You know what bro? You lost again to Timo Boll who is DOUBLE your age - just quit table tennis already"

@@paolocenci9108 As a Chinese student in Germany, I am quite sure that the atmosphere of table tennis in Germany is better than in China. Germany has a very good league system compared to China.

Ma Long didn't even play bad, Franziska just played incredibly smart. Great short and long pushes, great backhand flips and blocks.
This is the first match I seen ma long miss so many shots, so yes he definitely played bad.Which is okay it happens to everyone.
Yes, he did play very bad actually. He's having more matches like this, Ma..Might be starting to decline it seems..Big difference in now and previous Ma long level..

The guy who is commenting the match, is a Ma Long Fan. Franziska won the first 5 points and he is saying " ma long the greatest, ma long forehand is incredible..." Really?
Herr Franziska played super solid game and hit some incredible shots. Very impressing showing and Adams comentary is just icing on the cake. That roller @20 mins deserves an immediate like on this video.

Nail biting match. Whoa! You’re always kind of somewhat also rooting for the underdog and I thought to myself, “hey he’s playing really good and perhaps one should win against Ma long for once”
i did not know the outcome of this match when i started watching. im shocked! i went into the other room to tell my roomate to watch the net/edge/roller exchange at 19:58 and said "crazy shot right? i mean, he's gonna lose but that was amazing" franziska proved me a fool. what a match!

Ma Long is tired this year. I think he will take a short break while FZD performs.
But what CTTA is actually doing now，is to let FZD stay at home for 7 months and prepare only for team events.
He has barely played this year. He was just terrible this game.

WCQ lost to Kristian Karlsson, why do you make it such a big deal that he barely lost to Patrick Franziska? Saying he should end his career over one loss to WCQ who won the tournament last time and barely lost to another top 10 world player? He is still playing extremely well it just didn't go his way today. He is no FZD nowadays, he can't consistently and convincingly beat everyone like he used to, but he is still up there with the best. No need to retire.
I would consider fatigue, ma long played very many matches in Budapest. Wang and moregard are all out I dont see any other explanation.

Ma long plays fast game... The strategy was to play slow and near the net. I always hoped someone try that against Ma Long. Well he did and he won. 🏆
from what I can see...even more complex. strategy was to slow down balls and play near the net, but with constant variations of tempo, depth and placement, often aiming to the elbow but through placement variations. mixing as much as possible. just playing near the net would do too little when you can see top Chinese players playing matches against each other this way - they know well how to play 'at the table' at top level
Do the coaches ever play against each other just for fun at theese events, behind the scenes? All of them are former top players and still play and love the game so I assume so.
I think they'd love to but getting too busy warming up their players

Patrick played very well, but had a lot of luck also in important situations. More to add, Ma Long doesn't seem to be at 100% fitness and speed. Still impressive!

adam bobrow + wtt is fire
As Malong's splendid table tennis stage set an example for many competitive table tennis players, he seems to have gotten used to it. And the clean attack drive motion lione and attack rhythm in the 3 ball sequence after the serve seems to have been detected or familliar to Patrick. In Particular, the long and short cuts were enough to shake Malong's attack line rhythm and tempo.

I just wanted to point out that I find quite disrespectful that the cameraman was constantly focusing on the lady with the white and blue dress, this is a behavior that has been called out in other sports and has changed, I think table tennis should be no different, specially as you can see the cameraman focusing on the lady more than 10 times, and that's just in this video that is the condensed video of the full match.
Was just about to comment on this topic; honestly unprofessional and downright creepy by the cameraman. He needs a check of reality if he thinks this is okay.
Just what I was thinking. And it not just happened in this match. In Ma Long vs WCQ the cameraman was always pointing the camera towards a lady and he did that after every point
