  • 500,000 Americans experience homelessness every night. Lead Me Home is a documentary short by Jon Shenk and Pedro Kos that captures the experience from multiple perspectives. This immersive, cinematic film personalizes the overwhelming issue by telling the real-life stories of those going through it as a first step toward challenging uninformed attitudes and outmoded policies and gives the audience a rare, in-depth look at the scale, scope and diversity of unsheltered America today.

      @Jeffrey Ketcham true, the issue is so much more multifaceted than we typically think; but it's all part of a chain reaction--desperation for food, warmth, shelter leads people to make harrowing decisions for survival or the survival of their children. But there are also people who prey on the most vulnerable, who promise "a way out" of the cycle but continue to perpetuate it. Plus the stigma against mental illness and how a majority of insurance companies provide very little if anything for mental health. This is a vicious cycle and it is not going to be solved with one simple solution. But that being said, we need to *try* and the problem is so many people, both leaders with power and the "average American", throw their hands up in the air and walk away in frustration because of the vastness of the issue.

    • @stonecake313
      @stonecake313 Před 2 lety +3

      It’s not the community support ppl are against, it’s the large shelters that results in hundreds of homeless ppl congregating in an area - many of whom are addicts or aren’t mentally stable.
      It becomes extremely unsafe for nearby residents and businesses. Everyone feels horrible for ppl struggling with homelessness, but if u think opening up massive shelters near/in residential areas will be a safe and positive experience for everyone you are living in lala-land.
      An increase in sexual violence, theft and garbage along the streets is the concern.

      @TheRealDarklock Před 2 lety +7

      It's not so much that people are ignoring them it's more that things are not being done properly for them. You will never have the perfect or ideal fix for this situation but governments from local to state to federal always address these problems with short term solutions instead of long term solutions.
      Take education from Elementary to High School... they just teach the same old shit over and over ad naseum and they provide no stable environment to learn about the world around them. These schools need like a reality class to help and guide them properly into the future from structuring things in your life better to bank accounts to loans etc. etc. etc. and there shouldn't be an electives program for things like this. This should be taught to everyone and provide education on how to navigate the world if something goes wrong. Like if I lose my job and can't pay rent... what options do I have? Have education that also talks about improving yourself and those around you with some basic psychology so maybe the cycle of bad homes slowly gets removed.
      But instead what we have now are individuals roaming the country who simply had some bad luck at the wrong time and you go off the rails quickly. The long term solution is to prepare someone to never get near the rails and to bring some sensibility back to people because I watch some of the younger people in my family and they are absolutely clueless about the world around them. They are working in jobs that give them a little comfort and they have budgets for a new phone when the one they have works fine... they have a budget for donations or a budget to buy collectible toys (yes I have seen this). These people have their heads in la la land and our society is failing these people by not only ignoring their problems but ignoring the massive problem we are making for ourselves .

    Bleeding hearts fail to acknowledge that most people choose drugs and homeless/refuse to be helped. Some people truly have mental problems (which usually mixes with drugs) and just can't manage stability on their own.
    I'll watch this to expand my horizon but I lean towards people needing to be held to a standard and figure their shit out rather than allowing them to slack and blame the world

There's a big difference between somebody who still brushes their teeth and gets to shower every day even though they might be houseless and someone who pulls their pants down and s**** in front of a restaurant in front of everybody and hasn't had a shower in years. We choose the most affordable/decent house to rent in the lowest income area of the city. We only have one car payment and we have paid off our student loans. We live frugal to try and save money, but we never seem to get ahead because life is always throwing obstacles (car issues, health issues,inflation, etc). We will probably never be able to buy a house or live the life our parents assume we would. I am still so blessed for the life that I have and thankful every day. It is almost always drugs or mental illness and no one can lie and spin a sob story like an addict. The treating of homeless as helpless victims of circumstance who just need money and a place to stay over the last few decades has done tremendous harm to getting these people the help they often need.
    You hand these people money or just house them with no treatment than all you do is enable them. They need help, counseling, support workers who can help them learn to function in society, and more than anything they need to get clean and accept their role in how they ended up on the streets.

He said that they always offer help to anyone they can living on the street, they would just have to get clean, stay sober, and a place and eventually a job would be provided. Almost all of them refuse. The main issue a lot of the times is addiction, obviously that’s not always the case, but for a large portion of the homeless population mental health entangled with addiction is why they stay on the streets.

We can solve the housing crisis by just providing people homes (Germany just became the newest place to pass this in Berlin last month). I became homeless in the UK with the pandemic, simply couldn't pay my rent...ended up from working at a posh London office to sleep in a tent with a drug dealer....happened to me can happen to anyone any moment, specially if you rent private....worse year of my life 2021 , renting a studio flat now, far away from London and my daughter, as i had to relocate but the fear of could happen again kills me,and not seeing my daughter daily is even worse...this happening in Europe 21 st century is quite unbelievable

    Although I am not blind that this is an issue for some it really is a one sided view that doesn't address the problem. Los Angeles has alot of vacant homes for the homeless and the homeless don't take these homes due to rules like curfew , anti drug,etc. Throwing money at this is a waste as los Angeles has shown for years. Cutting taxes and making the city more affordable would do more.

    I hope this is a door to open more eyes on the drug epidemic and the lack of all things that involve mental illness. They often go hand in hand and tie into homelessness heavily, yet I never see our so called leaders doing much about any of it, probably because they're lining their pockets. Hoping some good comes out of this film!

I took a trip with my daughter down the Pacific coast and saw the situation first hand! I told my daughter if I had money, I would go back and get their stories. And help them.

    I think it's interesting that everyone wants to end homelessness, but they don't want to do anything like vote to allow a shelter come into their area to help with the issue. I live in a tourist/hospitality city, and we had a vote to turn some land that may or may not have been historical into a shelter area by the city, and there was so much opposition from the residents upset because they didn't want the land (which was just sitting there) to be turned into a shelter to help the mass amount of people experiencing homelessness in our city. Like, I literally could not help but roll my eyes at the utter lack of compassion these people had.

      or we could have a system such as Norway, Sweden and many parts of Europe have which spreads the wealth we all create more fairly, has less inequality and a safety net when things in life go wrong. These countries are always top or near the top when it comes to life satisfaction, hope for the future and levels of education. It's a myth that people succeed through hard work, individual effort and the right mindset.

    The government needs to do something about it, even when you are lucky to have a roof, rent and mortgage is way too High, people is working 2 jobs in some states to afford rent, not to mention that they leave their kids alone all day to be able to provide. Not sure if this is the beginning of the end of the world but the lack of compassion that I am seeing is concerning.

    • @philsarkol6443

      Could not say it better!! I read some reactions of people who are without any compassion, and blame the homeless people themselves, for being in that predicament. It is shocking to read their comments. How easily they talk about it. The rent or mortgage gettin too high for people with two jobs to stay in their homes, is just idiocracy. I also watch video's here on youtube of US people who have moved away to Europe to raise their children in a more humane society. Working with good wages, affordable housing, good affordable and accesable healthcare, better oppertunities for their children to play, good education; in short; moved out of the states for a better life. So is this period in time , the beginning of the end for the USA?
