  • The pandemic experience of COVID-19 created a major increase in anxiety and depression for many individuals across the world. There has also been an increase in the consumption of alcohol, drugs and medication to manage severe anxiety and depressive symptomatology. Medication can be abused quickly if it is taken more than prescribed and tolerance starts to build. The goal of exploring the saying “Take a Pill, Do a Skill” is to create balance in how our brain naturally deals with anxiety and depression.
The saying originated in an addictions IOP group to help those in recovery understand and remember how to rewire their brain to crave “natural skills” instead of craving “more pills” to get the chemical stimulation after taking medication. If you take a pill and chill, then the only chemical stimulation source for the brain will be from the medication.
If you take a pill and do a skill, then this concept supplements the “medication prescription” with a “behavioral prescription” to balance the chemical makeup of the brain with the “pill” and the “skill”.
