  • A playthrough of Ocean's 1995 license-based action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, Addams Family Values.
    Like the NES, the Super Nintendo had three Addams Family games. The first one ( • The Addams Family (SNE... ), based on the 1991 film, is what I consider to be the best console game Ocean ever made. The second ( • The Addams Family: Pug... ), based on the animated TV series, was as terrible to play as it was beautiful to look at. Addams Family Values, the third, falls somewhere between those two extremes, leaning heavily toward the latter.
    On the surface, Addams Family Values bears an even greater resemblance to the traditional Zelda games than Sunsoft's Fester's Quest did ( • Fester's Quest (NES) P... ). Baby Pubert has been kidnapped by Debbie Jelinsky, a money grubbing hussy that seeks to extort wealth and power from the Addams, and when creating the world for this to all take place in, someone clearly took notes when playing A Link to the Past ( • The Legend of Zelda: A... ).
    Beginning near a graveyard, Fester's second quest will take him across a large overworld broken up into several distinctly themed areas, including a shadowy forest, a sunlit forest, a swamp, a desolate mountain region, an icy desolate mountain region, and an area covered in ruined ancient structures and statues. These areas are all linked by networks of caves, teleportation portals, and crumbling bridges, and most ultimately lead to underground dungeons filled with traps and puzzles.
    But as eerily similar as this all sounds, Addams Family Values doesn’t live up to the billing of a Zelda clone. If A Link to the Past had been a painting, Addams Family Values would be the mimeographed reproduction that you'd have seen on a worksheet in elementary school. It vaguely captures the form of the work, but the minutiae - the technique, the care, and the nuance - that elevated the original masterwork is completely lost in translation. It misses the forest for the trees.
    The world lacks any sense of cohesion. There's little rhyme or reason to how it's all structured - the massive labrynthine overworld is largely empty and has no sense of flow, you're rarely given any clues as to where you need to go or what your next objective might be, and there's no sense of progression beyond the occasional upgrades made to your life gauge. The maps are simple to the point of being useless, you spend hours upon hours lost wandering in circles, and the countless times you're forced to backtrack halfway across the world to just to give someone an item makes for a game that is as boring as is it infuriatingly obtuse. Making matters worse is the game's visual design: the graphics are gorgeous, especially for an SNES game, and the game is drenched in atmosphere, but it wields its perspective against you in ways that really hurt the gameplay. Enemies that you can't see constantly ambush you from behind walls, and important pathways are often completely obscured by tree canopies.
    Much of the game's challenge is wrought from dirty tricks that force you to memorize large swathes of the vast, barren world and from the useless password system. To save, you have to talk to Cousin It who is hidden deep in the eastern swamps, and more often than not you'll get killed in a vain attempt to find him, undoing all of the hard won progress that has been made since your last visit.
    Addams Family Values' incredible graphics and music nail the gothic horror vibe that the designers were so clearly aiming for, but the gameplay is the same half-baked, player-hostile garbage that we had all come to expect from Ocean.

    My obligatory comment about how great and genuinely underrated the soundtrack is.

      I can't help but think Ocean might've lasted longer had they played to their strengths. They sucked at designing games, but if they'd turned themselves in a studio that other developers could outsource art and music production to, who knows what kind of success they might've had.

    Addams Family Values gets an A for its presentation and an F for its gameplay. Par for the course when it comes to Ocean's work.

      Idk. As a kid I really enjoyed it even though I really sucked at it... now I think about it yeah they really needed to work on the gameplay but its still a classic and a much beloved game of mine.. just wish they had done a better save system..

    Holy heck, and here I thought I'd hallucinated this game... I have like, the vaguest memories of playing it when I was a kid, but until now I thought it was just a weird dream I'd had about Fester's Quest!

    Why does the game drop you right into the action with so little context? I’m a fan of the movie it’s based on, but I still would’ve preferred a real introduction. This just comes off as lazy and rushed.

    Best Ocean game on the SNES. I have not played all of Ocean's SNES games but I thought that Jurassic Park 2 The Chaos Continues was a decent little game similar to LJN's Alien 3.

    As a child I had snes but we were cheap so I got this game instead of the popular titles. It was so hard I never beat it but I must have played it a million times and it has stuck with me ever since. Since then I been playing thru this game every couple months. I notice they ripped off alot of Zelda lttp sprites and stuff but I will always have a thing for this game. The game is so bad that it's good lol

  • @Dorian_Scott

    I *_really_* wish I could say that this is better than _"Fester's Quest."_ The graphics are very good and they do a much better job at trying to capture the Addams Family's dreary aesthetic. The soundtrack is equally impressive (The boss theme didn't have to go this hard lol (3:33). They even managed to fit in the bizarre humor from the show/movies - something that FQ didn't even *_try_* to attempt. But this style is accompanied by a lack of substance... and busy level designs. Ocean really seemed to love that philosophy.
    As for the film this is loosely based on, it's great. But I like the first one just a little more.

    This is a very hard game and I remember when I completed it after defeating the last boss, starting at 3:17:47 I wondered why my energy didn't fill back up and I walked around the room thinking there was something I had to grab before walking through the door and when seeing there was nothing to grab, I then walked through the door and thought I had to fight Debbie Jelinsky next with only one piece of energy which I had.

    • @MrPoke
      @MrPoke Před 6 měsíci

      well it's an indie film so I'd bet it's soundtrack has rather lax copyright. Many studio songs sampled the Phantasm theme. Also it's just 8 notes so they'd probably get away with it

    • @supmattboy
      @supmattboy Před 10 měsíci +3

      Yeah some of LJN games are not that bad. Most of the time, they have competent developers such as Rareware or Software Creations.
      Ocean games are just poisoned gifts, just like Infogrames' games. Beautiful presentation, atrocious everything else.

    • @Dorian_Scott
      @Dorian_Scott Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@supmattboy I actually liked some of Infogrames' titles - Spirou, the Smurfs and the Tintin games, in particular, are some of their best efforts.

    • @supmattboy
      @supmattboy Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@Dorian_Scott Spirou and Tintin are beautiful and faithful to the source material, but with terrible game design ideas and "fake" difficulty: unpredictable obstacles, bad hitboxes, tight and useless timer in the Tintin games since you got nothing by beating the level quickly... In my opinion The Smufs is better concerning that though. Just too hard for young children.
      Also I think the GameBoy Infogrames ports by Bit Managers are more enjoyable, with an awesome soundtrack. You should try it to compare with the SNES versions.
